“Jewel of the East Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

It 's so wonderful to have such an amazing zoo right here in the East Bay area. The environment is very natural-seeming so you don't feel sorry for the animals like you do when you go to some wildlife parks/exhibits. Kids absolutely love it and adults do too. They have special programs throughout the year that make it fun to go to anytime.

“Perfect zoo for the animals and nice for little ones.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Annual membership for locals is really worth the $! The animals are in animal friendly enclosures which means there are some animals you are less likely to see like the lions. If you head straight in at opening you might catch them... Its also quite hilly so plan a stroller or to carry the little ones by the end of your visit. Prices for souvenirs and food aren't outrageous but being locals we picnic it... Nice grassy areas for picnics can still be quite damp on foggy days so bring a blanket. It would be nice if they had picnic tables, but... In short, fun and nice for the animals, nice park setting for us locals and a nice zoo for out of town visitors as well.

“A really great zoo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

Tucked in a part of Oakland that even residents don't often find, let alone tourists, is a great small zoo. The forested terrain really highlights the view of the animals. Something for everyone, really helping you connect with and appreciate animals.

It's worth the drive. Small zoos can have an immediacy big zoos can't offer.

“Some of the animal exhibits are modernizing.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

I like how zoos are enlarging the animals areas to look more like their natural habitat. Oakland Zoo is beginning to do this with some of their animals. Its nestled in the Montclair Hills so its not near to the rougher areas of downtown Oakland so its safe for families. Always clean and animals look healthy.
