“One of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

One of the best chef's tasting menus we have experienced. A bit downsized from the typical 13 course $120 price tag for a tasting menu, this $75 (plus a very reasonable $45 wine pairing) menu left me feeling very satisfied yet comfortable. Each course was exquisite, definitely earning their Michelin star. The room is very unassuming and narrow, the service attentive and the wine descriptions very informative. One should note that the tasting menu is the only option and you don't see the menu before the meal so each course is a surprise.

“Worth a trip across the bay to Oakland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

Although I have had better food experiences with molecular gastronomy, this was one of the more enjoyable. We spend New Years Eve at this tiny restaurant, and for once we didn't get a menu especially for the occasion. The eight or so courses were tiny but I appreciated that, and all were tasty. The wine pairings were very nice, and well suited to the cuisine. I would go back.

“A unique dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

This was a birthday dinner courtesy of my other half. Each night there is a $75 fixed priced set menu consisting of 10 or so small courses, each unique, including elements of molecular gastronomy. The food is painstakingly crafted and so presented beautifully. It's worth splurging on the $45 wine pairing. The service is attentive and gracious. It's a bit of a splurge, but can't wait to come back again.

“Good for what it is”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Only one pre-fixe available. Only option is dessert: sweet or cheese? 7 courses plus 2 amuse-bouches = nine bites of food. Precisely. Nine, no more. Of the 9, only 2 were remarkable. They were very good indeed, but the rest - eh. In 45 years of dining, including the original nouvelle cuisine Le Petit Chaya in LA as well as the classic La Bourgogne in SF, I can assure you that yes, Syhabout is brilliant when he creates a winner...and no, not everything he creates is a winner.

There are many brilliant, equally talented chefs in the Bay Area. Modernist cuisine, like the nouvelle cuisine of the 1980's, is focused on effect and shock value. It is haute cuisine with ADHD - some of it amazing, most of it variants you've seen before done equally well elsewhere, and some of it is only "why are these ingredients even on the same plate?"

Commis is unique in Oakland, and for that reason alone it's worth going. But like Bauhaus architecture, it often feels like more of an intellectual exercise than someplace you want to actually live in.

It's amusing that so many people think it's A Big Thing that Commis' name is impossible to find. Many restaurants have done this before, and of course Michael Mina's original Aqua comes immediately to mind. If you didn't know where to look, Aqua's name was unnoticeable.

Service is very good, but as is typical in most of the Bay Area, there is no maitre d' so there are a few 'dropped balls' occasionally. I doubt most people would notice, however.

“Just Right”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

Sometimes a restaurant gets it Just right. Commis does just that. The minimalist decor is not too dark, not too precious. The service not inattentative, not overly friendly. The Prix fixe menu not too much, not too little. The food, perfection.
