“Great place to walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

Definitely take the walk around Lake Merritt, the centerpiece of Oakland, and take your camera. About three miles around the lake. Parking at adjacent Lakeside Park is just $2 for two hours, plenty of time to walk the lake and take photos. Lots of water birds, and otters apparently have been spotted recently, too. Be sure to check the Garden at Lakeside Park, too! If you have more time, the Lake Chalet is a nice place to have a drink or enjoy a meal on the water.

“The "new" Lake is simply beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

Over the last several years, the renovation work around Lake Merritt has produced an incredible urban space. Walking around the lake is delightful with the beautiful landscaping and the waterfowl everywhere. The new pedestrian bridge is also a visual treat as is the community garden. If you have not walked around the lake recently, you are missing a great experience.

“Beautiful spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Nice place to walk, watch the geese, enjoy shopping and restaurants with nice views of downtown. If you decide to walk all the way around, be aware it will take awhile as it's about three and a half miles. We enjoyed watching the dragon boat races and the sunset.

“Perfect spot to walk/run”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

I stayed just near Lake Merritt for three nights and the lake was beautiful in the summer.

A nice place to go sit and relax or go for a run around the tracks. There's lots of places to eat nearby and the scenery is just lovely.

“Best Urban Lake in a Major City”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

My husband and I stayed along Lake Merritt for 2 weeks and enjoyed daily an incredible view of the lake. The lake has a 3 mile trail around the lake where you can run, walk, walk your dog, do tai chi, or just sit and enjoy all the passersby. You can also rent kayaks, canoes and even take gondola ride on the lake. There is a beautiful free Bonsai garden at the center of the park area beside the lake that is maintained totally by volunteers. It's just a real gem in the city and one to be treasured by residents and visitors alike.
