“excellente!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2004

it's a great theatre, might be a lil ghetto. Excellente atmosphere, it is always packed with people at night time. I also like the food they serve there. Smoothie. Yummie. Great place to go to have some entertaining excitment!

“Bit scary at night”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2003

Walking out at night once we were met by a large crowd of young black men shouting at each other with several police cars trying to deal with the situation, not a very pleasant area.

“Improvement”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2003

True, Jack London used to be a horrible theatre with uncomfortable seats and no cup holders, but since the renovation there has been much improvement. there now are cup holders, and more comfortable stadium seating.

“Bad focus and uncomfortable”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2002

I went to a noontime screening of Road to Perdition and watched it slightly out of focus (in spite of repeated complaints to lobby staff) in a theater that was stuffy and warm. The air conditioning may take a while to kick in but there's no excuse for showing a film out of focus, and I'm seeing it more and more.

“Mediocre experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2002

The Jack London Cinema looks quite pleasant from the outside, and in the lobby. It's fairly large and spacious for a downtown cinema, and has a pretty good selection of films (9 showing when we went) - although all mainstream. There was no queue for our late showing of "A Beautiful Mind". The auditorium that we sat in was reasonably sized and (at 10:20pm) almost deserted, so we got excellent seats in the center of the theater with almost no-one around us. At first glance the seating is excellent, with reclining airline style chairs. However the floor was sticky to our feet (eww) and there was garbage from the previous showing scattered on the ground (eww, again). The seats, although initially spacious & comfortable, proved really quite uncomfortably butt numbing after the 2 1/4 hour movie, plus lengthy adverts and trailers. The first few minutes of the film were noticeably scratched and damaged, which I presume is the cinema playing a damaged reel rather than an artistic effect of the film. I intend to seek out a better movie going experience in the bay area. No complaints about the sound system.
