“Good food and fun in downtown Oakland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

I recently had a very enjoyable meal at Flora. The place is bustling with a bar which is what bars should be like! The food was very good -- the halibut ribs were excellent and you don't find them everywhere. It appears to be a meeting place for professionals in the area and everyone seemed to be having fun. The interior Art Deco styling is well done and provides a unique look to the place. The cocktail menu is especially impressive and I had two, just to check them out! I plan to return the next time I am in the area.
If I had to comment on a negative, it would be the noise factor. It is a high ceilinged building and voices travel all over. It is not a quiet, intimate restaurant.

“Superb farm-to-table food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

This is the kind of restaurant every town needs, San Francisco included. Great ambience, not too noisy, superb service, amazing drinks, terrific food, great desserts. I started off with a Carter Beats the Devil (amazing tequila drink -- I ordered my second without the agave syrup and liked it even better); then a burrata toast with salad -- just right. The main was a perfectly roasted halibut on seasonal succotash that was nothing short of perfection. Lastly, the caramel pudding with sea salt was a knockout. My buddy who joined me said he'd just have a spoonful but we ended up splitting it and pondered ordering a second.

“Winning, Fun Destination”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2012

Flora is a really cool uptown destination for good food and drinks. It is across from the newly restored Paramount Theatre, so it's a perfect location for the pre- or post- concert meal. I actually have gone to Flora for the past several years for lunch, though this year the restaurant currently serves lunch only on Fridays. I have previously enjoyed the burger with fries, and last Friday had the Caesar Salad with shrimp. The food is delicious, the servers are efficient and the prices are tailored for value. It is fun to join friends and soak in the cool vibes of Flora.

“How can this be?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2012

I have dined at Flora before with completely satisfactory results, but the last visit (after an absence of several months) was a complete letdown. First, there was the "Martini." It was the most minuscule pour I have encountered anywhere, including Australia. I carped and they added another half ounce. Then there was the hamburger: if Carl's Jr and the ilk made them this dry and tasteless they would be out of business. A co diner had the same reaction to his. Finally, there were the rather nicely cooked French fries. Tasty, but so highly salted that I was up all night drinking water.
