“Wish we could have stayed all week”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

We found this gem of a motel on the last day of our vacation and we wish we had been there all week! We loved that our room (all room) walked out onto an amazing veranda. We spent hours relaxing on the veranda, reading and watching the woodpeckers, magpies, and hawks play and hunt in the grass and trees out back. There's a creek out back for fishing with the kids and the cook will even cook up the fish for the kids for dinner. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms clean. Rooms are a little small but if you are spending time in your room your crazy! The common areas and verandas are the places to relax! Our night here was 100 times better than our 3 day stay at the pricy Tenaya Lodge down the road. You'd be crazy not to stay here.

18 of us from all over the US gathered at Sierra Sky Ranch for a Cousin Reunion. We were there for 5 nights and just loved the place. The staff was more than helpful and went out of their way to help in any way. Many thanks to owner Ted, manager Joey and Chef Frank to make this one of the best reunions we have had. Yes there was a few glitches in our rooms, but nothing that we couldn't overlook. The view was wonderful and we enjoyed the fire pit every night. The smoked prime rib that was served one night was the best any of us ever had, kudos to Chef Frank. We loved the rustic interior and the history, as I understand it was also once a brothel. We recommend Sierra Sky Ranch highly.

I wanted a hotel outside of Oakhurst to try and cut down on the drive time to Yosemite. The hotel was easy to find off the Hwy 41. The place was an old TB hospital and WW2 rehab facility back in the day. The grounds were well kept and the outside appearance was good. It has an onsite restaurant which we did not get to try out. It was closed the night of our stay. Our room was quaint. It was a little rough but overall clean. It had a "french door" type setting which opened out to a large porch that could be used by all guests. The bed was comfy but the blankets had some holes in them. The room had a small TV and refrigerator but no phone (not even to call the front desk). At night it is so quiet you can hear the crickets chirping, which for a City dweller makes it hard to fall asleep. The morning breakfast was a little disappointing. There was make it yourself waffles, hard boiled eggs, cereal, and some donuts. For the price of the stay I did expect better accommodations as well as a better selection at breakfast. Also, there was no in room blow dryer or iron. I had to go up to the front desk and ask for a blow dryer which is inconvenient. If you're looking for history this is the place. Otherwise I don't think I will be back.

Room Tip: I would request a room that looks out toward the back of the property. If you get a front facing pro...

It's an interesting place to stay. Very rustic. Not the cleanest hotel, but it still has a certain charm. This is a great place to stay with a group of friends because there is a lot of comfortable space to relax, but not much to do.

I prefer to stay at hotels that pay more attention to detail, (for example, there wasn't a single towel in the room) but Sierra Sky Ranch compares closely to other "resorts" in the region.

We stayed here for four nights as we were going to Yosemite in March and wanted a place close to the South gate as it was the only one open. If you like History this place has a ton of it. We stayed in the main building in room 3 and our room opened up to the veranda and the back area of the building. It was tight due to the two beds we needed but it worked just fine. We had a fridge and brought most of our food. They were extremely accommodating in getting us plates or anything we needed to make our trip memorable. There was a decent continental breakfast spread every morning that came with our stay. It was only about 10 miles from the gate and close to town for other needs and restaurants as the restaurant at the hotel was closed for the winter season. Very nice people there and we loved sitting outside behind our room on the veranda watching the birds.

Thank you for your nice review, Heather. We all really enjoyed having you and your father stay with us. We're glad you made good use of the refrigerator in your room and we were happy make sure you had whatever else you needed to make your eating arrangements convenient. I'm happy to say that our restaurant has re-opened for the season. It is now available for our guests to enjoy Wednesday through Sunday nights and is open from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. We hope you might have an opportunity to come stay with us again and enjoy dinner at The Branding Iron Steakhouse and Saloon. We are glad you at least had the opportunity to enjoy the continental breakfast spread that we take pride in. We are also happy that you enjoyed the veranda that so many of our guests rave about. Thanks again for staying with us, we look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Thank you very much for your kind review. We are happy that you enjoyed our unique atmosphere. Many of our guests express the same sentiments when they are here with us, so we appreciate that you took the time to post your thoughts online. Our kind and helpful staff are delivering the kind of service that we ask them to provide and Tajia is one of the best. We are happy you enjoyed meeting her and spending time together. We truly believe that our hotel is one the best places from which to visit Yosemite and the surrounding area.

On arrival we were greeted by a friendly female member of staff and even though we arrived before check in time, we were given a tour around the property and given a run down of the history which we all found very interesting - particularly the different uses of the property over the years and that previous guests had included John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe! Our rooms were quickly prepared, which we were very grateful for so that we could leave our bags before heading off into the park.

Our rooms were situated along the main corridor, we were room 1 and our friends were room 9. Both rooms were a reasonable size with plenty of furniture of storing luggage and an addition of a table and chairs so you can sit looking out if it is too chilly to sit on the balcony. In room 1 the bathroom was very compact, and was a bit of a struggle for my 6ft husband to move around. We also had a problem with our toilet constantly running water and although someone came to have a look, there was nothing that could be done at that time and so we had to remove the cistern lid to stop it every time, a bit of an inconvenience as we were only staying one night. The style of the rooms was very much in keeping with the rest of the property with thick bedspreads on the bed and in room 1, a massive rustic wooden headboard.

The building was very beautiful, with a lovely fire in the main room and as our visit was between Christmas and New Year, a ginormous Christmas tree! There were several other common areas that could be utilised by guests and books and board games available too which we put to good use. The restaurant on site was closed at the time which was a shame, but there were plenty of food places near by and we were given recommendations of where to go. The breakfast that we had in the morning was a bonus too, self service waffles which were great, a selection of small muffins and bread, juices and coffee.

The hotel was in a great location, very good views from the property itself and it was also nice and close to Yosemite National Park.

Thank you very much for your extensive review of our property. We are happy that you appreciated the historic and rustic nature of Sierra Sky Ranch. We enjoy sharing some of the history with our guests as we show them around on the way to their room. The west wing of rooms in the main house, where you stayed, was built sometime before 1920. Most of the rooms shared a bathroom in those days and several of the private baths were added after the current owners took over in 2004. The bathroom in room #1 is original and is the smallest on the property, but we do boast that it has the most satisfying shower. We're sorry we couldn't fix the toilet while you occupied the room, but it has been taken care of after your departure. We are also glad that you enjoyed our common areas, games and even books. We encourage our guests to relax and make themselves at home. We often have families playing games in one of our three lounges. We are also pleased that you enjoyed the Continental Breakfast that we include with the room and we're sorry that you didn't have the opportunity to enjoy the excellent food in our steakhouse this winter. We will be re-opening the restaurant for the spring, summer and fall seasons.
