“Service, quality, all delightful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2006

We have eaten at Erna's twice, both times while on our way to Yosemite from Southern California. Everything they do is truly of the highest quality. They provide exceptional service, the dining room is lovely (very romantic), and the food is exceptional. You should not be put off by the prix fixe menu or the price as they happily adjusted the number of courses (and correspondingly the price) to suit our preferences. For example, I don't eat fish so they provided a second (different) meat course for me.

If you make the trip, I suspect you will be delighted by your experience and your evening will surely be special.

“Beautiful, Elegant Restaurant w/ Superb Dining Staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2006

We went to Erna Elderberry’s restaurant to celebrate my birthday in May of 2006. The restaurant setting is very elegant, the stuff extremely polite, and we loved it.

The staff of Erna Elderberry is extremely attentive but all the while giving us a lot of privacy. Each couple/party had their own menu prepared for them with our names printed on the menu itself. This is a nice touch especially since we were celebrating a special occasion and the menu will serve as a keepsake. Before the chef goes into action, the waitstaff asked if we needed to change anything on the menu. All the requests that we had (like no beets in my salads) were granted politely. My boyfriend and I both have unique dietary requirements and they accommodated us very well.

Each course came out on a timely manner, which allowed us to talk and savor the dining experience. The food was very very delicious! Our waters and wines were constantly replenished, bread was offered at a consistent pace. Overall, the service was impeccable.

Overall, I highly recommend this hidden gem in Oakhurst. You will love it!

“Good but not that good.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2006

For years we had heard about Erna's Elderberry house with reviews like Frommer's 3 stars and Zagat 28's. This May after a trip to Yosemite we had dinner there.

The setting is pretty, the restaurant is beautiful, service and food are good, but it does not live up to its top ratings. Service was a little off on the night we visited with examples like clearing our dinnerware while carrying the dirty dinnerware from another table, not keeping wine glasses full, forgetting bread and butter, and serving/clearing from the wrong sides. These are all minor but should not happen in a top restaurant.

Food examples are scallops on oriental style vegetables with veggie stems that were not edible, lamb chops with little taste but gaminess sitting on a hash brown patty that could have come from Dennys, smoked sweet potato soup that was not seasonal and tasted like soup from Campbell, and a salad before the dessert course that was just that-a salad. The wine list is very good.

Erna's Elderberry House is a good restaurant and probably the best in the are, but it is not as good as its ratings.

“New Bistro at The Chateau”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2005

Erna's Elderberry House in Oakhurst now has a Bistro. It's a small, very quaint bar area. It is casual and the food is delicious. The service was great and our waiter gave us tips on things to see in Yosemite. We were there on a Tuesday night and didn't need a reservation. You may need a reservation on a weekend. You might consider staying at The Homestead B&B while in Oakhurst. We had our own cottage.
