Description: "I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Chateau du Sureau. They seem to sum up the exquisite experience of dining at Erna's Elderberry House and the adjacent Chateau, where the vast culinary talents of Executive Chef Gunnar Thompson now reign supreme. The restaurant, with its European country-estate atmosphere, is divided into three lovely dining areas, each adorned with antique French provincial furnishings, magnificent tapestries and original oil paintings. A stately terrace with a commanding view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains adds to the fabulous ambiance.

“Incredible Meal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

We first spent a weekend at the Chateau about 15 years ago and we had several incredible dinners at the Elderberry House since then. It one of the finest meals anyone will find in California. It is truly a dining experience! Definitely worth the travel and while you are at it, stay at the Chateau!

What a wonderful dining experience. The food is excellent, the staff and atmosphere were amazing as well. A must do for everyone's "bucket list"

“Used to be...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

What was once our exquisite, world-class dining experience...where we felt completely spoiled...has become 'good' food and close to sterile service. We used to know we could count on an incredible meal, doted on by the staff, and leisurely dining in it's gorgeous setting. Not the past two years. VERY disappointing. What happened?!??

“world-class cuisine in small-town CA”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

See my review of the Chateau - this is truly world-class cuisine with a European ambiance, all at the gate to Yosemite in a small rural town. Even if you can't stay at the Chateau, it's worth the splurge to eat at Erna's.

“Heaven close to Fresno (really)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

I really am a fan of this establishment. it's a grand place for a getaway, a great dinner, a week-end, spa and cooking classes. Between Erna, Chef Gunner and Sam...the man with always a plan for a wine pairing that will truly send the meal to the next level...you really can't ask for anything better.
It really is not a " puffy " place. Be yourself and you will have a great experience. Talk to Erna. ask to see her fabulous Chateau. Stay there overnight. go to the Spa. Take a cooking class from Chef Gunner. It's all there for you. They use organic, local, fresh ingredients when they can. Chef Gunner goes to great lengths to find and educate his staff and patrons on the ingredients used in his kitchen. I have seen him in action first hand. What a wonderful crew they have. This is a WOW on so many levels. Really...it is all about YOU and what you want to get out of the experience.
My absolute favorite part of the Chateau is the breakfast room. One of by best memories is breakfast in the early spring. Windows open, roaring fire, beautiful surroundings...I can't even describe how wonderful Erna and her Staff are. Erna and her attention to detail is magical. Truly a place to go. You will not be disappointed.
