“Oh, so Balboa beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2011

Just came back from a week at Balboa Bay Club...loved it!
This is a luxury high end hotel with impecable quality and service. Our room was overlooking the bay and the sight was totally worth it. The club side of the resort grants complimentary access to the pool, fitness and spa. The units are tastefully furnished with oversized bathrooms (double vanity, amazignly comfortable tub, separate shower). Everyone from the staff is polite, knowledgeable and very helpful.
If you haven't been at Newport Beach before, here are some tips on what to do while staying at Balboa:
- you need a rental car to tour around
- Newport Beach is a charming city with activities on both Balboa Pier and Newport Pier
- Fashion Island is a mall nearby
- Laguna Beach is a must see - 15 min drive south
- LA is 50min north (visit Hermosa, Redondo Beach and Santa Monica on the way up)
- Hollywood sightseeing (recommend starlite tours located in Kodak Theatre building)
- Universal Studio
- Disneyland

Dining at Newport Beach is an easy business - you can't go wrong. We loved Harborside Restaurant on Balboa Pier and ended up dining twice there. Balboa Bay Club itself is the home of Duke's Place and First Cabin restaurants, so both great choices.

Flying in is easier to SNA ( John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana - 10 min away and so much more convenient than LAX)

Happy travels and I hope you'll enjoy Balboa Bay Club as much as we did!

We stayed for 3 nights. The property is beautiful, right on the water so you can look at the yachts... keep in mind though that you don't get a water view at the lower price ranges. The rooms are very nice. We particularly liked the little balconies. If you are older you may want to get a room with a stall shower (not all rooms have them). Getting into the tub/shower is difficult if you are short and not flexible because of the wide granite ledge on the outside of the tub.
Things to watch out for:
1. parking--you must do valet parking at $28.00 a night so add that to your room rate. They told us there is a self-park but you need to feed the meter--who wants to do that? We found ourselves going in and out a lot so there was a lot of waiting for valet parking (they are pretty quick though). So the question is do you need to tip the valet every time you go in and out? Add that to the cost of the room also.
2. There are 2 restaurants on site and both are beautiful and pricey. $16.00 for a club sandwich is too much. I don't think we are alone in this opinion because restaurants semed to be empty for the most part. If you just want a quick inexpensive breakfast you are out of luck. No walking to anything. So you either need to eat at the resort or wait for valet parking and go out somewhere.
3. We had a problem with the electronic lock on our door. Staff was pretty slow to address the issue. I reported it in the morning and when we got back to our room in the afternoon it was still not fixed and the room was not cleaned. Turns out housekeeping couldn't get in to clean it. They called maintenance but no one showed up. No one from housekeeping reported this to the front desk. So when we couldn't get into our room and the front desk couldn't get into our room they had to call security and send an engineer up to fix it. In the meantime, we were tired and having to wait around while the engineer had to replace the whole electronic lock on the door. I finally got angry and called the front desk and asked for another room. The whole episode was frustrating because of the lazy approach everyone took to remedying the situation. I had to get mad for them to do something. It would have been very nice if everyone had been proactive. I also think the front desk should have offered us another room as soon as they realized we had a problem. I don't think you ever want to let a customer get angry... especially if you tout yourself as an upscale resort.
Bottom line: We won't be staying here again.

You get what you pay for and for the high-end prices charged, this hotel definitely delivers. The rooms are incredibly spacious and tastefully appointed in modern and elegant, yet not overdone way. Lots of windows, wooden blinds, a very large flat screen television, comfy bed, large bathtub and oversize shower stall with glass door are just some of the highlights. From a business perspective, an actual desk chair and some desktop plugs would be nice. I couldn't get the hardwired Internet to work, but the WiFi was solid. The bathroom here is larger than some entire rooms in European hotels.

While this is a resort, it's very compact -- there's not golf courts or tennis courts that I noticed, or many things that would appeal to kids. What it does offer is a couple of very nice pools, a spa, a couple of stores and some attractive restaurants. The setting along the water, with it's own marina full of very expensive yachts, is quite charming. A small beach area along a tiny section of the resort's coastline is nice enough, but don't go and expect to find what you envision as a Southern California beach.

My only meal on the property was a group breakfast, which was outstanding.

The service was professional and friendly with no attitude that often comes with places of this caliber. Wake up calls have an actual person at the other end of the phone, even asking if you need a second call -- a welcome change from the recordings or arguably worse, silence. The only service flaw I experienced was that late at night (on all occasions), it often took the front desk staff a very long time to pick up a call.

The location in Newport Beach is convenient to get to from John Wayne airport and numerous other places in Orange County.

Room Tip: The courtyard views of the pool areas are less expensive than those overlooking the marina/water and...

Pros:
1. Room was great! Layout of room is great. Small hallway to your room, separate toilet and tub (huge bathroom), patio with every room, nice comfy bed, updated marble tops with flat screen, furniture in room is well kept and CLEAN!
2. Location of hotel is right by the water so you get great views of yatchs.
3. Fitness center is nice and well equipped
4. Pool looked nice (didn't go in, too cold)
5. Duke's Place had nice music playing and the lunch was pretty good
5. First Cabin has good wait staff. Food was mediocre

Cons:
1. Staff at the front desk. Many of them gave off a stuck-up vibe. Really? You're going to act stuck up when you work as a receptionist at a hotel? Really? Maybe someone needs to remind them that their job really isn't a career.

2. There are many events going on durinso the weekend so expect noise, but the worst may be the people attending those events. As I was walking through the hall this girl wearing what looked like a cheap prom dressed looked at me and basically gave me a snarky look. If she was supposed to look her best and that was what she came up with I suggest she go back to the drawing table.

I don't know if it's just the OC area or if this particular hotel attracts rich, snarky, conceited people but whatever it is, it definitely dampers your vacation.

However, I do want to stress that the upkeep of the hotel is very nice and I suppose if you just ignore the ignorant people that are there then you'll enoy your stay.

I went along with my husband on a recent business meeting. The company that invited us had made all the arrangements and what a good choice. I usually get tired of the same restaurants but not here, service and food was amazing! I visited the spa and again wonderful. Beautiful clean room with all you would expect. Then when I approached the concierge about going shopping he said if the town car is available perhaps we can take you and it was. I called when I was finished and again available and I was picked up. I think the best part of this experience was the great staff and service , it made my stay there so enjoyable.

This hotel is in an easily accessible location and has a nice marina setting - in fact, there were several weddings conducted on Friday night and Saturday during our stay. There is a health facility and heated pool, with a nice bar and live entertainment. I can't comment on the food, since we didn't eat here.

This hotel has perhaps the friendliest staff the reviewer has ever encountered. Not just warm and smiling, they went out of there way to anticipate needs. Even without the beautiful water location, the people made this stay very special.
