“Let Down By The Bed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

This is a good hotel in a decent area, let down by the spectacularly poor quality bed. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I stayed in a hotel with a mattress that felt this old and worn. It was not comfortable.

Aside from that however, the room was nice, had a decent view, although ocean view was a stretch (I guess you could see the ocean, but only looking over a dingy looking roof). The bathroom especially was really good.

I enjoyed the fitness centre, and while it was a little small, there was a good amount of equipment in there. I could imagine at peak times there being a wait for cardio equipment however.

I have stayed here many times over the years, I even lived here for a month in the 90's while my home was being repaired. The $75M remodel which was recently completed spruced up the lobby and suites but did little or nothing to the majority of the property. Unless you can afford a suite just cut through all the other rooms and go directly to The Harbor Pointe building and book a room with a direct ocean view over the pool. The Harbor Pointe building is the main atrium building where the lobby is located. If you are going to have a boring cookie cutter Marriott room than you at least have to have the direct ocean view to make it worth while. During my most recent stay in August 2012 I had to switch rooms because our first room was a complete mess outfitted with an array of short and curlies in the bathtub and beds that looked like the were made up by a blind person. The staff was very apologetic and switched us to a clean room and sent up a bottle of wine and some cheese to make up for it.. The pool is packed but fun! Get there early. The sandbar at the pool has cocktails and food service to your lounge chair. The buffet breakfast is almost worth it. If it comes with your room then go for it. If you have to pay $30 a head go somewhere else for breakfast. All in all, it's a Marriott. It's like driving a Ford. You know what your going to get and it might break down on you occasionally, but it will get you there.

Hotel located a short distance from the pier. Plenty of shopping available across the street at Fashion Island. Lots of restaurants. Easy access from the freeway and takes around five minutes or so to drive in...

Room Tip: Rooms near pool get loud on hot summer nights...

Paid for deluxe ocean view and asked for high floor and got a fabulous room on the 8th floor in the main tower - Harbour Pointe. Amazing view - all good with room, except BAD MATTRESSES. Pool v busy at weekend - not enough sunbeds, quiet during week. Hotel felt luxurious, lots of places to sit inside and out. Smart lobby. Hotel didn't feel crowded despite wedding and then conference. Very comfortable Starbucks. Excellent location for Fashion Island and restaurants.

I stayed here for a weekend because my friend's wedding took place here! It seemed like a very nice hotel that had gotten just a tiny bit worn down. Although the interior design was beautiful -- lots of great looking lamps, furnishings, plants -- things like seat cushions looked a bit old, and the mattress in our room, while comfy, had been covered with a separate pillow top to extend its life (I peeked under the sheets and it seemed somewhat older too). I liked that they had two pools and jacuzzis, but was sad to see that the jacuzzi jets were not working (though the jacuzzi was quite hot), and the pool was pretty small.

Pros: Starbucks in the hotel! Yes! A very nice, sheik hotel bar with nice bartenders. Very good valets and great front desk & bellhop service. Overall the service was extremely professional. Our room had a sliding glass door that you could open for fresh air and a view; others had nice-looking patios. There seemed to be a TON of offerings for kids -- kiddy play area by the pool, ping pong, daily activities, etc. And my friend's wedding was really, really well done. GREAT food at the reception, which was in one of their big ballrooms. Oh, and the giant mall across the street -- Fashion Island -- has tons of shopping and restaurants.

Cons: Rooms were a bit small but adequate. Room service was minimal -- they made the bed but otherwise didn't seem to clean or touch anything! Finally, I do think that the price ($220 regular, $180 with AAA) was a little too high for the hotel. When it was brand new, sure, but now that it's a little old, I don't think that's a reasonable price for the overall value.

In general I would recommend this hotel for a nice comfortable stay with reasonably good amenities and great service -- especially for families -- but I wouldn't call this a luxury stay nor would I come here for a really special romantic weekend.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the pools are pretty noisy.

What I liked: very friendly staff. Room A/C was running on arrival and room was cold. Great water pressure in the shower. Bed was comfortable. Slept well.

What I didn't like: the building and the rooms are very old school. If you are looking for something remotely contemporary this is not the place. Another example is the piece of soap they provide for you to take a shower rather than liquid soap.
The shower would not get hot but barely warm (7am).
The hallway in front of the rooms hava a stone tile floor which means that you will hear every suitcase passing your room.
I was here for only one night and found the hotel very difficult to navigate even with the map they provide.
Bottle of water in the room is not complimentary, but $5. Wifi is $12.95 per night. Like I said, old school....

I was at the Marriott for business and for one night, it was a beautiful hotel to stay in. The service when you pull up to valet was outstanding, the welcoming from the lobby greeter with her ipad which I thought was very cool and Amanda at the front desk who was extremely helpful. I checked into my room with an ocean/golf course view and found two double beds. I always book a king and maybe I didn't hear it when I checked in or it wasn't brought up, but I immediately called down and someone brought up a key card for a room two doors down with a king bed. The rooms are small and the bathroom is a bit too small, but you have what you need: a comfortable bed, AC, flatscreen tv, safe and a view. The mall is across the street, the lobby bar has a great vibe and the ambience is calming, at the same time, you feel as though you can go to the beach, shopping, driving or eating at a local pizza place. I probably wouldn't come back as I like to try new hotels, but I would recommend it to a friend.
