“Family-oriented hotel with beautiful grounds but rooms and service need improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

I have really mixed feelings about this hotel, while in some aspects it was excellent, in others the quality was severely lacking.

Location: 4 stars
The hotel is about an hour drive from LA and is a very short drive from a local John Wayne airport. It is within 15 min walk of Balboa island that has some shopping and boardwalk. Other than that there is not much within walking distance, though hotel does provide a free shuttle to nearby Fashion Island mall. If you'd like to be near the beach however, the closest one would be a 40 minute walk. Hotel does provide bike rentals but having a car seems optimal, except parking is rather pricey. Also be aware, that the hotel has a quiet policy starting at 10 pm, obviously geared toward children with families.

Grounds: 5 starts
Recently renovated, the hotel grounds are in excellent condition, except for the rooms. The hotel itself consists of several buildings spread out throughout the territory with each building having its own pool/hot tub area. Next to the 'Bay' building pool, there is also a children's waterslide. In addition, hotel has a golf course, beautiful garden area, and wedding ceremony/reception area as well as several conference rooms.

Rooms: 2 stars
May be the grounds look nice, but once you step into the room, you may think you came to Motel 6. The rooms are small, poorly designed, think open shower-bathroom with no doors in family-friendly hotel, very poorly lit and provide little privacy, since all the windows open to the pool area, just as in a motel where windows would face the street. Furthermore, air conditioner was very noisy and leaking the whole time.

Service: 3 stars
Service at the bar/restaurant and catering was excellent, front desk not so much. Upon arrival, there was an unreasonably long wait for check in, and upon check in it turned out the hotel could not accommodate a booked room- king bed on a higher floor, instead giving me two double beds on the first floor despite making a reservation well in advance. When i asked if any king bed rooms would open up, front desk person said to come back tomorrow, which i did and they said they are sold out, right after I just saw someone check in into a room with king bed. Not only not accommodating but also flat out lying staff. Considering first impression is the most important, I doubt I would be back to that hotel.

Food: 4 stars
I was staying at the hotel for a business meeting and had all the meals on the property as well. Most of the time the food was tasty and creative, though a couple of times entrees were rather dry and not particularly flavorful.

Amenities: 3 stars
The hotel has several pools, hot tub, gym, bike rentals, internet, gold course, and computer/printer. Most of these amenities are unreasonably expensive however, $15+ a day internet when most hotels provide internet for free these days, per minute charge for using the computer in the lobby or a printer, expensive parking. Pool is nice but is constantly occupied by small kids splashing everything around them. And on top of everything, the gym was closed for maintenance the whole time we stayed there.

In sum, the hotel is may be a good option for families with kids who do not mind staying the whole day at the pool. If you are looking to go to the beach or be closer to shopping/entertainment, other hotels would be a better choice. Also, this hotel might give you the opposite room of what you paid for, never a good start to a trip.

Room Tip: Do not take anything on the first floor

Overall, upon arrival I felt that Hyatt did a nice job renovating tihs old hotel. The rooms were nicely appointed and overall it had a nice feel to it. The parking charges were a bit confusing and made it not user friendly if you wanted to have guest come and visit you. We finally deceided to meet off property due to high charges for our guest. The only real issue is that tehy missed my wake-up calls for early in the morning. When I inquired about it, they acknowledge it but never really felt like it was a big deal. Would have used my phone s an alarm but it was muted due to a baby sleeping in our room. Needless to say we were late for a function, so next tiem will travel with an alarm clock!

We just spent 7 nites here and had a great experience. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The location suited us perfectly as we were able to explore close by beaches and dine at numerous restaurants in the area. The pool staff made our "pool time" enjoyable. The recently renovated rooms were nice. We will be back!

Stayed one night here, got the standard room, which was very good. The room also had a small balcony, everything was renovated and looked new. Liked the style of the room and the whole hotel(very modern). The breakfast was really expensive, cost more than our room. Excellent service from the hotel staff.

Me and a couple of my girlfriends spent the weekend here recently and had a wonderful time. The grounds are magnificent..the rooms are very comfortable and luxurious. I kept waiting for the spa staff to knock on our door to give us a massage!! Service was great, front desk was attentive to our every need, even suggesting a wonderful offsite breakfast spot on Pacific Coast Highway that we will definitely visit again. No downsides to staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: I thing the Balboa Bldg has the best rooms.

5 stars because of their great on-site customer service. Front desk went out of way to accommodate our request and give special birthday treat. Each dept. took great care of us. The facilities were very nice. I would and hope to indeed go back.

Having been to the Hyatt Newport Beach several times, I was thrilled to hear they were giving this atmospheric southern California resort once owned by John Wayne a 10 million dollar face lift. It had become a bit sad through its long star-studded years, though its ambiance continued to burn through the lush vegetation and the settling of its bones. Its proportions had withstood time, its legends of movie stars and Hollywood shenanigans, the tales of Wayne and Monroe and Kennedy all adding to its panache. Still I was excited to see what $10 M could accomplish.
I booked a mid-June vacation and could not have been happier with my stay. The rooms were softly enhanced with the usual plumped up crisp Hyatt bedding, smooth colors, new carpeting. Everything was brighter, and it being June the Euculyptus trees were peeling and the jacaranda scented the balconies and walkways. An elegant white rose garden had been planted where the ping pong table had been, the family pool had a new slide and a water pistol joisting area where there was an equal mix of parents and kids. I preferred the quiet of the Lido pool, reading being the favored activity there, though the live music and sandy beach (!) at the third pool were lovely in the late afternoons in my grandkids loved the slide!
The menu in the restaurant is full of delicious entrees – oh, the crème brulee, the scallops, the beet risotto – and all of it enhanced by the sprawling inside-outside blend of elegance and California casual ambiance.
It was nice to see that a fine old hotel can be redecorated and reshaped while still maintaining its integrity. I travel quite a bit and like staying in places which reflect the area I’m in – no fan of generic architecture, I prefer atmospheric lodgings with updated amenities. The Hyatt Newport Beach -- the grounds, the service, and the brilliant 4th of July fireworks was the perfect southern California treat for our family.

Room Tip: I loved having coffee on the veranda in the mornings looking over the hotels rolling golf course!
