We booked a two bedroom unit (they are all two bedroom units in this complex) for half a week to decompress after 4 nights at Disneyland. These are beautiful units that all look brand new in spite of being about 10 years old. While we were there the complex was having several technical difficulties with Staff unable to produce a checkout receipt and the wireless internet was down for several days. They never could log on to determine how many Marriott member points we had. Really odd (and a little scary) at check-in they gave us keys to an occupied room. That has never happened to me in over 30 years of business and personal traveling. The staff member at the reception desk was stunned (as we were).
The on site bar/grill and the convenience store are handy and they both serve quality food at somewhat extravagant prices.
The pools are beautiful and there are lots of free (and small fee) events on property which is good since you are a fair distance to the nearest beach, which is about 1/2 a mile down a walkable, but steep hill and across a 6 lane highway. Fashion Island is a very nice upscale Mall that is again, a good drive away. You will get used to everything being a good drive away.
You are half way to Newport and half way to Laguna...
A couple of things that were odd about this complex.
First off we were told over and over by staff that the complex is over 90% "Marriott Owners" and yet every person that we met, at the pool, or the bar, or where have you were not owners. We also did the "time share/ownership" presentation (which is worth your time) and it was really busy... simple math and statistics tells me that this 90% of customers being Marriott Owners was at best wishful thinking.
Also the talk at the hot tub (among the non-owners) was how noisy these units are. We were in a ground floor unit, and you can and will hear people walking on your head. It is not subtle and if there are little kids upstairs (which is common in this family friendly complex) you will hear them running around like they are in your unit... This normally is not an issue for me, but it was really loud and in our case the little ones upstairs were active at 5:45 in the morning. You can also hear when you next door guests take a shower, or flushes the toilet. Other guests chatting around the pool stated they could hear appliances through the walls but we never noticed that... But ya the ceiling insulation/sound deadening could use a few extra batts.
The A/C in the units was at best iffy... It seemed barely able to circulate the air in the unit. Let alone cool it. You will learn to love the ceiling fans in the bed rooms, you will need them. Time for a filter change maybe?
The large central pool(s) can get really busy. If (when) they do, take a walk (or even a drive) to one of the two "outer pools" and try them. We found them to be more relaxed and considerably less busy and less "intimidating".
The pull out couches are some of the best pull-outs that you will sleep on ANYWHERE. Every hotel should use these "memory foam" hide-away sofa's they were awesome.
If you are looking for a self contained location, that you can stock with groceries and take a "home away from home" break from everything, this is a great place. If you are looking for a place were you could walk to a beach, or shopping, or something, not so much.
