“A little bit of Paris”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

Well appointed decor. Appropriate lighting. Mellow background music. Authentic Parisian brasserie menu. Many great choices. I recommend the escargot. Light on the garlic and properly cooked, soft inside. Steak frites is an old standby but exceede my expectations. Chocolate soufflé was excellent and enough for two.

Bouillabaisse was light and tasty. Lots of seafood.

Wine list had great variety with many French choice. Reasonably priced too. Extremely goodFrenchcooking. Great place for a date or a special night out with your spouse.

“Food was good, service was meh”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

I ate here for the first time during the Newport restaurant week. We were a party of 5 and were put in the corner under a light that was burnt out, so it was quite dark. Our sever never once asked if we had dined there before or if we had questions or even offered to explain anything. She mentioned that there was a special prix fixe menu for restaurant week and then returned a long time afterwards to take our order. All of the food was excellent and their regular prix fixe menu is quite reasonable for three courses. Their bread is really great. Our server also never asked if we wanted coffee or tea after the main course. I don't know if the service is supposed to be like that as if it is part of the "charm", but for a restaurant in Fashion Island with a lot of competition, I expected more. Overall the atmosphere was great and the food is good, but if I return I will not have high hopes for the service.

“Just Ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We dined at BP on Monday night during Newport Beach Restaurant week. It was busy, but not slammed.

The good: lovely restaurant, feels like France. Salads were wonderful - fresh, crisp, dressings were really exceptional - flavorful and delicious.
The ok: mains are typical bistro fair acceptably executed. Short ribs were good, Parmesan risotto a creative and perfect pairing, green beans were crisp, but too greasy. Pork chop ok, not special. Steak frite - steak nice, fries had nice texture but nominal flavor.
The ugly: Desserts miss the mark. Ile Flottante - mushy meringue, tasteless creme anglaise. Chocolate mousse - grainy - even our 14-year-old noted this. Chocolate creme brulee (server recommended) not flavorful. Custard seemed to have no egg flavor and chocolate flavor was not intense enough, did not compensate for the lack of the base custard flavor.
Service was agonizingly slow - over 40 minutes between our appetizer and entree. 15 minutes to get bill after our desserts were finished.

“Best French Bistro In Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is a great albeit upscale Brasserie in Newport Beach. Actually, it is probably the only one existing at the moment. The food was great as was the service. Portions are not huge, but then again, you probably could not each much more anyway. Very pretty place with lively people and background music. On Thursday night they have live entertainment. Dining room is more formal to eat, bar area, much less so, however the tables are large enough to accomodate eating comfortably. The only problem we had was that I had made a reservation on the phone and they did not have it in their computer system. This is not the first time this has happened to me when booking reservations. Next time I will do it online. They still accomodated us, graciously, but in the bar area instead of the main dining room.
