“Luxury and Views but Varied Warmth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

My husband and I just completed our second stay at Pelican Hill within the last 12 months. The views, setting, linens and amenities are truly first class. All restaurants on site have fabulous food and selection. As expected with any top notch resort, retaurant prices are on the higher end but you get what you pay for - high end, quality food with great selection. The only restaurant I felt was a bit "off" was the Coliseum Pool & Grill. They are a bit over priced for what they serve. We found service from Housekeeping, Spa Staff, Golf Cart Drivers and Poolside Servers to be OUTSTANDING! They were all warm, kind, down to earth and friendly. The one area which I was surprised to be so vastly different from our last visit was the warmth of the Front Desk, Valet and Doorman. They all seemed a bit cold with indifferent attitudes which was much different from our first visit nearly 12 mos ago. I hope this area improves as the resort is truly a gem...

Our stay at Pelican Hill was a bit off from the start. When asked at check-in to please try to ensure we had a nice view (no parking lot) the desk agent assured us it was lovely, overlooking gardens and the mountainside with a peek of the ocean from the terrace. We arrived at the room to find it actually backed up to a thorny hedge that shielded the view from the main entry drive into the resort. Plenty of traffic noise but no view of a garden and certainly no ocean. The room was spacious with a nice fireplace, but as others have testified, home to several small spiders and other bugs. That said, the people from room service and housekeeping were warm, welcoming and extremely professional. The desk staff and valet stiff but polite. The location is nice, but we'll keep returning to our other favorite hotel in the region (RC Laguna Niguel) just because we found the desk agent to be mis-leading and a bit patronizing.

I am not sure you could get anymore luxurious than this hotel.

From the staff to the dining to the linens to the lobby. All Grande and all luxurious.

Would DEFINITLEY recommend it!

The restaurant is wonderful! Make a point to eat there and sit out on the terrace, super romantic...
Also go when you can lay by the pool! View is top notch!

Room Tip: If you can stay in a VILLA - it is like the nicest small bungalow you have ever seen!

I just read the review about bad business practices. I was amused by the General Managers response that asked the gentleman to call him directly. That is a joke. My wife booked a vacation from the east coast to see our son and celebrate her birthday. I was hospitalized the night before and had to delay our trip (hospital letter was obtained but was of no value. They charged us for the complete stay and told us we could apply it toward a future visit if used this year. We have tried to contact Lama the GM and Amy, the head of reservations for over a week with no success. Left many messages with assistants etc. Without their approval, the front desk can not rebook. Proverbial runaround. They have our money so " stall and delay" tactics are obviously being used. We were referred by friends who are quite irritated and will not book in advance again. Jeffery,

I understand your frustration with your recent experience, but I am disappointed to read the comments you have posted here. As I was away from the Resort this week on business, multiple members of my management team have reached out to you by phone with no response. Within this week, we have contacted you more than eight times. I understand you spoke with my assistant directly on multiple occasions, but each of our return phone calls went unanswered.

It is unfortunate that our attempts to connect with you have not been well received. We will continue to try and reach out to remedy this situation.

Kind regards,

There is no question that The Resort at Pelican HIll is breathtaking in most every way. The grounds, golf course, ocean views, etc. are all stunning! We had a nice ocean view bungalow which was well-appointed with all that you'd expect from a hotel of this caliber (two exceptions : no slippers and no bath tub amenities). The bed, linens ... all superb.

The food, both in the restaurant and in-room dining, were very good. No complaints.

The only thing that stood out to us during our stay was that no one seemed to be willing to part with a smile : from the valets, to the front desk personnel, and most of the service staff. Even after attempting to be cordial and smile ourselves (and generous tips in some cases). Every one was professional enough, but just seemed oddly cold.

The worldwide AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts list is like a check-list/guide for us when we travel (as to where we stay) so we are very familiar with what that warm greeting and those smiles feel like. Heck, just in general. But, it was obviously noticeable and distracting enough for me to take them to time share it here and almost push it to a 3 star rating. As to why this was the case, I don't know ... but happy staff usually show it.

My wife and I originally booked a Bungalow room (about 800 sq. feet). Upon check in we were upgraded to a 3 bedroom Villa (thanks AMEX, I think we caught them on a slow week too). This room was over 2000 sq. feet with new, very high end finishes (marble, full stocked kitchen, great linens, garage etc.). It is worth noting the bungalows are just as nice, just a little smaller. The well appointed beautiful rooms, large swimming pools, professional staff, numerous restaurants are better than any Ritz Carlton I have stayed at. We played golf the next day on the South course which was very scenic, challenging but friendly. Great views all day too. Our caddy, Eric was so nice and helpful; excellent pro shop as well. They have Mercedes Benz SUV's to shuttle you anytime you need a ride around the resort, we never waited more than a couple of minutes. It's one of the few places after 2 nights I was not ready to leave. We are already planning our next visit.

Room Tip: The resort is separated into the bungalows section which is near the main entrance. They also have t...

We checked into villa 709 with much enthusiasm and excitement to stay with our twin girls for our 5 night vacation! This turned out to be a beautiful resort, with amazing rooms, views and ...substandard service & maintenance, and novice villa management.

1st night- watching movie in master-bedroom and saw black spider crawling in the bed. Both husband and I jumped out of bed and scrambled to kill spider so we could try to hopefully sleep in the same bed.

Midnight- found 2 big black spiders in master bathroom floor. Now feeling very uncomfortable trying to go back to bed with what now appears to be a spider problem.

We notified pelican staff of problem that morning.

Next day found mounds of ants in kitchen on clean baby bottles. We again notified Pelican staff problem.

Same day our nanny found another black spider in the girls bathroom on a towel.

Next day we had more ants in kitchen and we had another spider in the bathroom.

Overall, We called resort staff, engineering, and manager Michael Barrio more than 3 times about the pest problem. Michael said definitively we must have left the door open and that is how all the spiders got in ( to the beds and bathrooms) .

Michael offensively also said I could get a spa treatment for myself so "you can relax".

We explained to them that we had reasonable expectations of a superb resort that pest control should be a routine maintenance issue. Since we had pre advised staff that we would be with 2 infants, that reasonable precautions would be not to be forced to expose our twins to 3 cycles of dangerous pesticide sprayed while we were in the villa.

We found our concerns fell on deaf ears. Manager Michael came to our room on our request and saw our spiders. He offered to give me a complimentary spa treatment.

We love this resort and location. However, in comparison to our usual amazing Four Seasons stays, the service and management at Pelican would likely needs adjustments.

Ann,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about your recent stay. I appreciate you sharing your comments here, and would like to personally apologize for any discomfort you experienced during your stay. I understand your concerns, especially with two young children in the room.

With the Resort situated on 504 acres of a coastal hillside landscape, we recommend that our guests keep their windows and doors closed, to avoid any concerns with pests entering the room during the warm summer season. As a preventative measure, our landscaping team also facilitates routine pest control maintenance.

In speaking with our management team, I understand that you received significant compensation during your stay, to remedy this unfortunate situation. The complimentary spa service was offered to you as a sincere gesture, so you could enjoy the Resort’s amenities, while our team came in to address the concerns in your Villa.

Again, I apologize if your experience was less than perfect, and invite you to contact me directly, should you wish to discuss further. I will provide my contact information to you separately in a private message.

Kind regards,

Giuseppe Lama
