“My Stay at Homewood suites - Newark.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

Rooms were excellent and clean. Very good ambience. All facilities provided were in excellent working condition. Noise insulation in room is not great, i mean people movement in corridors are heard in room. But overall experience was very good. Free Wi-Fi was definitely a big advantage and it worked seamless.

I stayed here for a week on business and was very pleased. I always stay at Hilton properties and now include this one as a keeper. I have a nice Queen bed with very comfortable pillows :) My suite had a nice fridge with an ice maker, dishwasher, stove and microwave. there is a Food Maxx store about three blocks away for shopping to make sure you eat good. Restaurants within walking distance are either Vietnamese or Korean, if you want Americana, you will need to drive one exit to the Auto Parkway to get other choices. This hotel has a couple of BBQ's, a nice pool, a good brekky and decent meals during the week from Monday to Thursday. Nice hotel, close to the interstates and other routes in the bay area.

An excellent hotel for extended stays - everything is clean and very efficiently run, all the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is very kid-friendly (we stayed here with our three small kids) - has a good pool and spa, and a basketball court. Four nights a week the hotel serve a pretty good buffet dinner, and the breakfasts are good. The hotel is in a good location if you don't want to drive a lot, as it is right by the Newpark Mall. Very highly recommended.

I appreciated that the laundry facilities had soap...that was a GREAT little detail that showed me this hotel cared about it's customers! The breakfast in the morning was GREAT! I was told that breakfast started at 7 AM. I had some HUNGRY baseball players that needed to be at the ball field warming up by 7:20 AM. I asked them to meet me downstairs by 6:40 AM. When I got down to the breakfast area the boys were all eating. Excellent service, excellent food, and excellent accomodations all around! Thank you...our ball team will be traveling to Las Vegas to play in a baseball tournament. After staying at the Homewood Suites in Newark / Fremont we have decided to stay at the Homewood Suites in Henderson, South Las Vegas, Nevada.

I stayed at this property during a long-term consulting project in the area, running from mid-January through mid-September. Often I do not have input on the lodging on projects, and this was no exception. Given the other lodging options in the immediate area - and the criticisms of those other properties - I felt like I was placed at the best of the available options. Saying that, it was an average stay, with room for improvement.

The property sits in between a struggling shopping mall and a high school, in the middle of a mixed-use retail area. It is close to the 880 freeway for easy access, but far enough away where traffic noise is not a problem. Despite its proximity to the freeway, it can be a touch difficult to locate this property if you have not been to this part of the Bay Area previously. There are several ethnic restaurants nearby (Thai, Indian, Chinese, to name a few), and a couple of fast-food options within a few blocks.

The property seemed to be occupied by some long-term travelers such as myself, some travelers in for a weekend or half-week, and what seemed to be (on personal observation/interaction) at least a few people who were staying there as an actual residence.

I stayed on the third floor, more or less in the central part of the building, for the entire duration of my stay. Outwardly, the room appears clean, though over the course of the stay, one does note that the carpets are pretty soiled from heavy traffic, with some mold/mildew accumulation in places. Lighting was decent, though could stand an upgrade (more towards "whiter" light instead of dull yellow). The room could also stand to be painted. The kitchenette was largely functional, though the burners on the stove were ill-fitting and never seemed to remain in place. A new stainless steel refrigerator was installed about halfway through my stay, and while it was clean, I don't think it had been wiped down inside and out as one would normally do after installation and before regular use. (I did it myself after the installation). Also, when there was even the lightest of breezes outside, there would be a "howl" through the exhaust vent. The bed was satisfactory, though not as comfortable in comparison to other lodging properties. Storage space (drawers and closet) were sufficient. The furnishings exhibited signs of wear and tear in places. The walls were pretty thin, so noise from adjacent rooms, the room above, out in the hallway, and out on the street were quite evident. The TV channel options were pretty limited and not particularly diverse. Of the approximately 25 channels available, at least 5 were devoted strictly to hotel and/or movie advertising.

There were occasional insect problems in the room at various points during my stay. Generally these were mosquitoes/gnats, though occasionally there would be spiders and earwigs that would make appearances in the room. I don't know if they were accessing through the vents or other spots, though I think in part some may have come in from around the door to the hallway, as there were significant gaps there that also allowed for drafts and noise.

Hilton properties have been operating under a "green" initiative for a number of years, which primarily make themselves evident in the push to make guests use their towels and bed linens longer, and/or to limit the in-room temperature controls. The towels and linens aren't always a problem, as I tend to only take housekeeping once every 2-3 days during a stay. However, that does lead to linens not being changed for longer stretches than that. Also, "clean" towels may be placed by housekeeping that have clear signs of mold or other unknown stains. Both of these things have happened at other Hilton properties quite regularly, and happened at this one as well. As for the temperature control, a thermostat was provided in the room that was easy to use. I like to keep the room cool for my own comfort, but found that the system would often shut off entirely - even if you left the "auto" function on - late at night, not to come on again until sometime in the morning. In an area with more humidity like the Bay (at times), that made for some hot, restless nights, as the temperature would climb. Again, this is an issue I have encountered most commonly at Hilton properties, and happened here.

Wi-fi was really the only option available for Internet connectivity, and while that wasn't a problem with the devices I use, its reliability and speed were increasingly inconsistent over the term of my stay. On the Fourth of July holiday, the wi-fi was out of order altogether (failing the evening before), and it was almost two days before service was restored and could be used reliably. It didn't help for those of us doing work, and - although the staff was generally good about notifying of construction or other outages - the failure to notify guests until we had to ask individually was a little annoying.

As for the rest of the property, there were many signs of wear and tear throughout. The maintenance and housekeeping staffs seemed to genuinely try to keep things as clean as it could be, but its hard to do when there is much that needs to be upgraded. The elevator on the southwest wing of the building had a problem with a pungent urine and smoke smell throughout the course of my stay. It wasn't until my last week staying there that they finally removed the carpeting in that elevator, which remedied those odors. Similarly, the laundry facilities were in need of an upgrade, as the machines were dirty, and some of the dryers didn't always work as thoroughly as they should (if they weren't broken). I did not use the pool at any point in my stay, though know that it was often quite busy - especially on weekends and through the summer months when there were more children on site.

Complimentary breakfasts are provided daily, and light dinners (with beer and wine) are provided on Mondays through Thursdays. I only ate breakfast twice - both very early in my stay - but stopped eating due to a disagreeable reaction to those, health-wise. I ate dinner there once, though largely avoided it because the dining area was generally very full and noisy, as people lingered to partake of the beer and wine.

The front desk staff was generally friendly and helpful, with the odd exception here and there. The night auditors/overnight staff were a little less cordial, and on the few occasions that I had to call down to address noise issues or safety concerns, I did not get an answer, so would assume they were not around the front desk area for large amounts of time.

Overall, it was an average stay at best. I have stayed in better Homewood Suites properties before, and though I would have preferred to stay elsewhere, this was probably the "least worst" option when compared to other lodging in the immediate Newark-Fremont area (in terms of cleanliness, crime, etc.). I would say that if you are traveling or working in the area and only have to stay for a night or two, this property would be satisfactory. But for a true extended stay, one might be better served to choose from other properties in the Bay Area, even if it means a longer commute.

Minuses: peeling wallpaper; messy draperies; stained towels / floor mats; chipped bathroom fixtures; noisy AC with rumbling vibration; guests with a yappy dog in the next room.

Pluses: conscientious housekeeping; comfortable bedding; decent food including fresh fruits in the morning and nice salad greens in the evening; nice and quiet business center; easy access but away from heavy traffic; windows that actually open; walking distance to good sized shopping mall; fairly reliable hi-speed connection.

Not sure how old the property is...but it shows its age.

I stayed at this hotel for 4 months and it was great. I was given a room right by an exit so access was very easy in and out. Service was good and you get breakfast and food/drinks in the evening during the week.
