“Red Castle is an Interesting Place to Say But!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2008

My husband and I just came back from touring California and stopped at the Red Castle Inn for one night. The Inn is very unusual and quite interesting to see. We loved the porches as they were private and relaxing. The walk to town down the lovely path was very enjoyable. We ate at the Half Moon Cafe which was excellent. Nevada City is truly a charming town.

One of the reasons we chose the Red Castle Inn was the mention in most of the articles about the Inn of a multi course gourmet breakfast. We were quite disappointed as the breakfast was served buffet style with nothing really unusual. I would say it could be considered a continental plus breakfast rather than gourmet.

The owners were no where to be found except for when we arrived. My husband had to ring the bell to get the male owner to collect our payment for the room when we were ready to leave.
We did not meet any of the other guests and there was no where to sit at breakfast.

The feeling I got is that the owners have done this for a long time and are just going through the motions without much enthusiasm. They definitely should stop advertising the multi course gourmet breakfast as that is just not accurate.

The place has appeal because of the historic background but I'm sure there are other places in Nevada City that do a better job of welcoming and serving their guests.

The Red Castle Inn is nestled in beautiful gardens. It is charming, authentic and very peaceful. All the rooms are decorated to make you feel like you are stepping back in time and are exceptionally clean and bright. The inn keepers are gracious and accomodating. The food was absolutely fabulous. I had some special dietary needs which I informed them of ahead of time and they took such good care of me. We are still raving about the food. A short walk will take you from the Inn to downtown Nevada City. The Red Castle Inn is at the top of our list when we are in the Nevada City area.

The Red Castle Inn in Nevada City, CA is a delightful place to stay. The innkeeper was most interesting and very pleasant, and delivered the most tastey breakfasts each morning. There was great attention paid to our room each day. The location and proximity to town is excellent, and we met other very interesting guests. The gardens are lovely, and I would highly recommend a visit there.

Wonderful location within walking distance to downtown Nevada City. Beautiful setting nestled along historic cedar and walnut trees. Several areas to relax outside with a glass of wine or just to relax!

Inside there are many historic and antique objects and pictures to look at.

Rooms are clean and the proprietors are friendly ! Sign in to the guestbook at arrival-- and take a closer look- the book started in 1923 or so !!!

Breakfast is delicious and the coffee is fresh! Fresh squeezed orange juice too !

Lots of stairs so you'll burn off some of that delicious breakfast !

My husband and i stayed for 2 days at this b&b ,we had a wonderful time.
The house is very old fashioned and beautiful, spotlessly clean and attention to detail out of this world.
The owners were very helpful, non intrusive, good people.
The gardens are gorgeous.

We loved this place and would highly recommend a visit.
We stayed in Morningstar room and paid $120.00 per night.

The innkeepers did nothing but try not to talk or have an contact with the guests. There were about 6 couples that stayed this weekend and all couldn't believe how this couple did nothing to make anyone feel welcome. I sat in the over run garden where the filled garbage could be seen and the place was loaded with ants. My sister in law was unable to stay outside because of all the bites she received. The only shinning point was the breakfast, but they made sure to serve it buffet style in a hall so they wouldn't have to make any contact. I wasn't able to get water because they were hidden in their room. We had to go down stairs and ring a bell and wait to see if they would answer. Never at any time did they say there's ice or water . No kitchen or fidge facilities. I felt so uncomfortable and they made it clear they didn't want to be bothered. What a terrible example what a B&B is suppose to be. They never made any mention of the town or things to do. This would be the last place I'd spend any time in.

reading the previous review of the exact room we had picked, we were nervous about going to the red castle inn last week, but was i surprised. our experience in the forest view room was incredible. arriving late we got the key left for us & tip toed down the stairs to discover the magical room - so romantic & warm with a clawfoot tub & bubble bath, & the inviting fluffy bed surrounded by lace. we dimmed the chandelier in the beds canapy & drifted off to sleep. in the morning my husband brought our breakfasts to enjoy in privacy. we sat at the pretty drop leaf table at the foot of the bed- it even had placemats in the drawer. the brealfast was tasty & unusual both days, served in several course so we went back up to the buffet to try everything in turn. we met the innkeeper as he brought up the main course of poached eggs with lochs, mushrooms & tomato halves with herbs, the roasted grapes they served with homemade cheese & buttery little toasts were so good i asked for the recipe. i recommend trying everything they serve- but the real treat was the giant strawberries with brown sugar & sour cream - impossible to resist! the innkeeper was very gracious & helpful with suggestions for nearby walks & dinner places, even giving us directions to the empire mine state park. the second morning we rose early after a really restful night & had coffee on our private porch at our table for two outside overlooking the beautiful scenery. we were not bothered at all that beyond the outdoor drapes dividing our patio was the winter storage area for the garden tables. you would not know they were there unless you peeked!! we then went upstairs with the other guests to enjoy our breakfast in the parlor. there were just a few people & we enjoyed meeting guests from other areas in the informal setting instead of at one large table. all in all it was relaxing & a perfect getaway for us. we look forward to our next visit.

  • Liked — the atmosphere in the inn, a step back in time
  • Disliked — nothing i can recall
