My husband and I just came back from touring California and stopped at the Red Castle Inn for one night. The Inn is very unusual and quite interesting to see. We loved the porches as they were private and relaxing. The walk to town down the lovely path was very enjoyable. We ate at the Half Moon Cafe which was excellent. Nevada City is truly a charming town.
One of the reasons we chose the Red Castle Inn was the mention in most of the articles about the Inn of a multi course gourmet breakfast. We were quite disappointed as the breakfast was served buffet style with nothing really unusual. I would say it could be considered a continental plus breakfast rather than gourmet.
The owners were no where to be found except for when we arrived. My husband had to ring the bell to get the male owner to collect our payment for the room when we were ready to leave.
We did not meet any of the other guests and there was no where to sit at breakfast.
The feeling I got is that the owners have done this for a long time and are just going through the motions without much enthusiasm. They definitely should stop advertising the multi course gourmet breakfast as that is just not accurate.
The place has appeal because of the historic background but I'm sure there are other places in Nevada City that do a better job of welcoming and serving their guests.
