“fun to visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

I love this place! It is a piece of history. It is the oldest running hotel since 1854! The hotel is old and it has character. National has a great bar and the bar tenders are awesome, just cant be too high maintenance. Take a shot of whiskey, sing some karaoke, and have some fun.

Room Tip: grab some thai @ sopa

Yuck!!! My husband wanted to stay here for a wedding we were attending. This place is dirty and falling apart. The windows were broken. The shower And window curtains were coming off. The tv didn't work. The shower was missing a handle and the worst was there were dead bugs on top of the canopy over the bed. We stayed in room 20 a suite that they said was charming and cozy with a fireplace. An electrical one. The room was over the bar and they had kareoke until all hours. Never again for $140

Now, to be fair, its been awhile since I stayed here. But my hubby and I were just in the area for our yearly trek and saw that the place is still as dismal as ever. Too bad really, given its most excellent location and historic roots. And I wouldn't even be mentioning it here, were it not for the fact that I saw an ad for the place in a really nice regional vacation guide and wanted to save some poor sap from major disappointment. The first time visitor dupe has to be the only reason this place is still open. It's unkempt, dirty and feels more like being in what I imagine an oldtime brothel to be like. And I might be more forgiving if it was at least a more affordable option. Save your money and stay at The Outside Inn if you want affordable, or The Emma Nevada House if you want luxury.

We stayed at the National Hotel last weekend for our anniversary. A little up-dating, it has been up-dated since the 80's.....What a disappointment when we checked into our so called cottage with fireplace. We were told it was a romactic cottage. We both walked around the room with our shoes on the whole time, slept being careful of not touching the blankets would touch us. Thank goodness we had a wonderful in town with many friends. I should have looked at Tripadvisor first.

Room Tip: Don't stay here! So many other cute places in town.

OK...so I don't think I will stay here again but it was a unique experience. It is a very old historic hotel that has had very little updating, in my opinion. To my surprise upon checking in, no shower only a bath tub. It was a nice bath tub, claw foot. I didn't try it out as I opted for the public shower on the top floor, which worked out just fine. It got a bit chilly in our room as the boiler had not kicked in yet. Not wanting to wait around for heat I was given a space heater to use and soon the tiny little room was warm and toasty. There was no in-room coffee but they did have a fresh pot in the morning in the lobby. One suggestion would be to fire the housekeeping staff as the place could really use a spring cleaning. Another, lower the prices...much to pricey.

We like this hotel because it is so old and historic. Things aren't even close to good condition, but if you like history and are adventurous, it can be fun. We've stayed when it was really cold, and the steam heat didn't quite reach our room. We had to borrow an electric heater from the front desk, but we made it through the night. The trick to enjoying a stay here is to have low expectations and think of it as an adventure. Also keep in mind that it's 130 years old and it hasn't been restored in a long time. The location is great. Lots of good restaurants or bars within a block or two.

This hotel is in disrepair as evidenced by the wind blowing through the holes in the walls and cracks around the windows. Doors in the room would not close or lock, such as the bathroom.
They only have a small heater to heat the bedroom and with the wind blowing through, it did very little to keep us warm. They said they had internet service but when I tried it, it was not working. They don't have anyone to help you bring your bags up one or two flights of stairs.
Lighting is poor at best. During our one night stay we had a man come walking through our room from an open window. They explained that he was a guest that was looking around the hotel. Needless to say that we left before daylight.

Room Tip: Don't stay in this hotel
