My husband and I have stayed at the National Hotel and have had breakfast in their restaurant at least 3-4 times in the past. We have always enjoyed the stay, food and historical atmosphere. It had been two years since we had made a visit to the National so we took my mother-in-law and the three of us went up to Nevada City today for lunch and shopping. I am sorry to say that the food and cleanliness of the restaurant was awful. It started with the sticky dirty menus and got worse from there. We were sat at a table by the window with nice view of the street, however, the flies swarming our table were unbelieveable! My husband killed six with his napkin while we waited for our food; during the meal we continued to have to shoo another half a dozen away from our meals. There was dust visible on every free surface and the place smelled of mildew and kerosene. The food was the worst I have had served out in years! My husband's burger was over done and his fries greasey and soggy. My mother-in-law's steak and eggs was to have been served with potatoes and toast; she had to ask as her meal arrived without either. My club sandwhich was made with processed turkey meat; half the toast was burnt and the other half barely warmed. The sandwhich was to have come with bacon and mayo; neither were present. My side of "fresh fruit" was days old sliced apples, orange and grapes with the stems still on. The service was slow, we were the only ones in the place and we waited almost 10 minutes for our drinks and almost 30 minutes for our food. The waitress was friendly; but when we politely brought to her attention the food quality and the fly issue she offered no apology, assistance or offer to return the food to the kitchen she only stated that she was not responsible for the flies. Rooms we viewed in the hotel area and conditions in the bar and restrooms were the same: dirty and in need of repair/upkeep, whole place looks like a fire trap. Sorry to say that we will not be returning to the National any time soon. I grew up in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area and it is sad to see this once Queen of the Gold Country in such a state.
