“Best way to experience Napa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

I've been to Napa before on my own, with friends and even on another tour shuttle but this was by far the best experience I've had of Napa, and I'm local! Sue, our driver, was also a fantastic guide who regaled us with stories, history and awesome jams. She was prompt in picking us up yet still very patient when some of our fellow tourists were 10 minutes late. We had an unusually small group of four, which initially was uncomfortable for me because I was expecting to hide anonymously in the crowd, but it turned out to be a good group and I credit Sue for opening us all up and keeping things lively. We visited four wineries that Sue chose (we didn't mind, we weren't picky), and yet that still took us the whole day and then some - we went an hour over our expected time with no complaints or rush from Sue.

The first winery was a fancy affair in Oakville called Tamber Bay. So here's the thing with Platypus - wine tasting fees aren't included in the tour fee BUT they get you great discounts. We got a $45 tasting for just $20 and it was obviously an expensive tasting indeed. We had a great guide who loved making cheesy jokes and taught us a great deal about tasting wine - a lesson we carried with us for the rest of the wineries that day.

The second winery was a small one, Fulton Winery, but it likewise had great staff. Steph was lovely and taught us more about the difference between opened and unopened wine. They also had a lovely deck where we had a healthy lunch of sandwiches and kinwa salad, courtesy of Platypus. It was tasty and didn't weigh your stomach down which was perfect for more wine tasting.

The third winery, Casa Nuestro, seemed even smaller but the key feature was their two goats! We got to feed them and didn't even have to pay a feeding fee like some other places would do. Inside, we got the standard tasting for $10. While they poured short, they did give us an extra tasting directly out of one of their wine barrels in the back.

The last place was actually a tasting room for the Hill Family, which we didn't mind because we'd literally driven all over Napa by then and gotten our fill of the sights and vineyards. We got great service - got our own table in fact, with a plate of Bouchon bread, cheese, and nuts. April, the lady serving us, stayed with us for most of the time and told us all kinds of stories about the winery and even tips on renting a car. She even threw us some different wines that weren't on the standard tasting menu based on our groups preferences, which made the experience a very personal one.

All in all, it was a lovely day where I learned so much about wine and Napa. I highly recommend Platypus Tours, even if you're a local who thinks they know everything. You're sure to learn something new with Platypus, even if it may just be discovering a new winery to love. They make a point to bring you to unique wineries for a different experience every time. I would definitely use them again next time I want to tour wine country.

“Best way to tour Napa wine country”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

This is a fantastic company and we were so pleased with the tour. Our guide, Shawnda, was charming and knowledgeable and took a genuine interest in what type of adventure our small group was looking for. We all preferred red wines, so she tailored the tour to our tastes and took us to four amazing places, each better than the last.

The picnic lunch was delicious and we were provided an large cheese tray and bottled water throughout the day.

In all if you are going to tour Napa, this is the company to go with. Even if you don't know anyone else on the tour you definitely will by the end of the trip. It was such a fun day!

“Great way to learn about wine!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

Steve was a great tour guide. He designed the tour perfectly so we transitioned from novice to expert in only a day. The wineries were all amazing and we really enjoyed visiting some of the smaller places that are not as well known. Overall, it is a great tour for couples, groups and individuals looking to learn a lot about the region, the wine making process and how to drink wine. If you are looking for an advanced course, ask for Steve and make it a private tour! He's amazing.

“A Great Day In Napa with Platypus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

From the minute our journey began at the ferry terminal in Vallejo, our trip was professional, enjoyable, and memorable. Sam, our guide, was waiting for us (rather than the other way around)! He had many options to choose for us as far as wineries to visit, and he chose wisely! We visited four: Hess, Nicholson Ranch, Larson and Reata. Each was unique, and we enjoyed all of them. We enjoyed the tastings at all of them, so it is hard to say which one I liked the best! I will say that of all of them, the most extensive tour was at Nicholson Ranch, which is considered the "new kid on the block," and it was very interesting going to the vineyards and the caves. Our guide was incredibly knowledgable as to the wine making process, and we even had a chance to ask questions of one of the wine makers while down in a tasting room in the cave. The informal and personal touches made this tour the best. Hess had some excellent wines and we had a short, but enjoyable tour there, and Mr. Hess's art collection was open for us to view. Although we did not have a tour at Reata and Lawson, we enjoyed the wine tasting itself and the wines!

We enjoyed lunch put together by Sam while at Nicholson, which was an assortment of meats, cheeses and Couscous. Simple but hit the spot. Sam also brought out a cheese and cracker basket for us to share on our way to our later afternoon tastings. He was just an excellent guide, providing information on the area and had a great balance between talking and just letting us soak up the ambience. He moved us along at a reasonable pace. Never did we feel rushed!

When the sun finally broke out mid-day, it just added to the total enjoyment of our day in Napa. Thank you Sam and Platypus for a wonderful day, which we never would have known about if it wasn't for Trip Advisor, always our go-to travel site!.

“As good as the reviews suggested”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

Karl was a hoot, and the van and snacks were great too. We had a private tour the day before and are very picky, but really enjoyed the day. The best part was Karl's willingness to add one of my favorite wineries (Hall) to our itinerary. He (and the others on the bus) were very flexible about it.
