“Good Brunch - Look Forward to Dinner Near Future”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2014

We went for brunch here and it was very good. Service is excellent. The restaurant is nicely decorated - upstairs unlike the restaurant before is now also a seating area and there is some patio seating available as well.

We loved our brunch here. Best hot cakes (pistachio huckleberry...with maple syrup) here. The person I was with loved the hash. We both shared appetizers of deviled eggs (good) and also their awesome sweet potatoe pakoras. French press coffee is awesome.

Since the reviews I have read but dinner is stellar, I look forward to making reservations for dinner here in the near .future. Its probably the only reason I rated this place 4 instead of 5 stars....

Parked for free on the street opposite the restaurant.

“Good but not Great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2014

We went for dinner and the restaurant was well attended. Service was attentive. The menu was a bit limited, standard fare, nothing very unique or creative. Appetizer portions too small to share and tended to be too spicey maybe to cover lack of flavor? Short ribs done well but the sauce thin. Halibut also done well but accompanied by bland cauliflower and vegetables. Pricey for the quality of food. Wine choices excellent.

“Holding its own with the big leaguers in Napa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2014

We dined at Ad Hoc and Bouchon prior to our final meal of the trip at Torc. We were with a large group from San Fran and NYC, everyone agreed that is was their best meal in recent memory, period.
The sommelier was knowledgeable but not arrogant, and our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. The food speaks for itself, but we particularly enjoyed the roast chicken and papardelle noodles. For desert the lemon tart was out of this world.
Lastly, our price point was right on the mark. Not cheap by any means, but reasonable for the setting, quality, and service.

“Off the wall cuisine in this "Chef" lead Restaraunt”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014

This large & modern restaurant started not so well. Shown straight to our table, given water and ignored.

Asked for cocktails but no liquor license, no issue good wine & beer selection. They have a nice bar.

The food did not follow this disappointing start. The lamb raguo with pasta starter knocked the ball out of the park. Again I'd have that as a mail course. My daughter has a prawn cocktail that I was find disappointing in the sauce. Not here a beautifully prepared blend of spicy but not to hot sauce mixed with the pawns and just enough lettuce, really good. My wife and brother in-laws had vegetable salad - outstanding.

For mains my wife actually changed and had the lamb even though an appetizer. The beef short rib was amazing, I could have eaten it with a spoon. It had great infusions of flavor only achieved through long and careful cooking. The halibut was a picture and tasted fantastic moist cooked just right.

This restaurant would be great with a better front of house that could make you feel more welcome. They've only been open 6 months and I'm sure they'll figure that out. The business end in the kitchen was outstanding. They prepared food in the open and they seem a well oiled machine with the right level of individuality in their cooking as all the dishes were unique.

“Very Good Working on Great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

Four of us had an early evening dinner on a Monday at Torc, which recently opened in downtown Napa.

Sean O'Toole is a thinking man's restauranteur. He has carefully envisioned a unique and varied small menu that offers little bites, interesting sides, a nice array of entrees along with a mid-price to over the top wine list. His execution is flawless. His staff is well trained and very engaging. Dishes arrive in a well paced manner and in an order that allows everyone at the table to get a taste. The space is modern, sleek without being noisy or overstated. You really have to like what is going on here and its a great addition to what already is a rich Downtown Napa scene.

Why very good, not great? As you would expect, some dishes are better than others though there was not an obvious miss. The menu changes so I will not dwell on anything specific here and other reviews mention some "must try" items.. Portions are small, really quite small. For all the work that he is putting into excellence a little bit more on the plate would make a difference. Prices are high. Not eye watering but it would be lovely to think that his great work could be offered up with a mid-range Prix fix deal or two at a price that would make it more likely to get my drop in business. No one walked away hungry but at $70 a person with a $50 bottle of wine is not an every day affair.

Torc is meeting the high standard you should expect in Napa and as a local that is something to celebrate. We look forward to seeing it evolve.
