“Amazing B&B in Napa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2008

My boyfriend and I stayed at this B&B for one night, while we were touring Wine Country. It was our first experience at a Bed & Breakfast and we were a little hesitant.

Jim & Jamie blew us away. Everything was perfect, right down to how the toilet paper was folded on our arrival. The room was amazing, with double French doors opening up onto a patio where we enjoyed our complimentary champagne and truffles. We enjoyed every aspect of the room - the large jacuzzi jet tub, the gas fireplace, the music playing on our arrival ...

The food was amazing - I think my boyfriend ate all the chocolate chip cookies that were left for guests! We enjoyed the amazing breakfast sitting in the garden patio.

We really felt at home at the Inn on First, and really felt relaxed when we left.

I would defintely recommend this to anyone looking for someone to stay in Napa.

  • Liked — The amazing room, the amazing hosts, the food ... everything!
  • Disliked — My boyfriend said the blinds let in too much light in the morning.

We stayed at the Inn on First asa birthday getaway for a friend. The rooms all have a jetted bath and gas fireplaces and a mini fridge. Upon arrival in your room, you are greeted with chocolates and homemade goodies.

The Innkeepers, Jim and Jamie were outstanding in their hospitality. Their advice for local restaurants were excellent. They also provided advice on which wineries in the area to visit, as well as other activities. They arranged a massage for us upon arrival and a wine tour with Platypus the next day.

Jim is a trained chef and the breakfasts were amazing. Breakfast can be taken in the dining room or the garden, which was comfortable due to the gas heaters. Coffee and homemade chocolate chip cookies were always available in the dining room and port in the living room.

It is on the free trolly line, so you can get around Napa at ease and it is within walking distance of many fine restaurants.

We stayed at The Inn on First for 3 nights in September. The occassion was a celebration of a 50th birthday for one of our group. The hospitality that was shown by Jim, Jaime and Mercedes was unbelievable. We had booked in room massages for us on arrival. Imagine our surprise when our rooms were stocked with snacks and champagne. From the very first moment that we entered the Inn the entire stay was terrific. All of the recommendations for dinner and wine tastings were right on. We also had a balloon ride booked and it also was fantastic. We had the Veraison and First Crush rooms and everything from the beds to the linens were top notch. Breakfast in the garden was a treat. And the food served was phenomenal. When I return to Napa, I will definately return to The Inn on First.

Our first time to Napa and we had a wonderful time. Our Napa vacation experience was specially enhanced by our stay at The Inn On First. The room we had was great with lots of comfortable details. The service was the best. Jim and Jamey make you feel welcomed. And finally the BREAKFAST was fantastic.

The Inn on First is by far the nicest B&B that we have ever stayed at. Other reviewers have discussed Jim and Jamie's hospitality, assistance, cooking, friendliness, etc. That is all true. Our room was completely clean and contained lovely furnishings and snacks. Great bed and shower. Thick towels. The room was beautifully decorated. The Inn has beautiful outdoor space: gardens filled with flowers, a large outdoor breakfast area and even an enclosed spot for pets. The owners had great suggestions of places to go, wineries, restaurants--these sugestions were in a notebook in the room and given to me on email after my booking. The first morning they also spent a lot of time with us planning an itinerary for wine tasting, arranging for pet sitting and dinner reservations. These suggestions were completely reliable. Our room had a little private patio--which was very nice--particularly since we had a puppy. The Inn had the best provisions/welcome for dogs of any hotel or inn we have ever stayed at. The photos on the website do not do this place justice. Stay here--there can not be a better place in Napa.

  • Liked — Beautiful gardens, pet facilties
  • Disliked — WiFi was sporadic in our room, but was generally available

For those that want the short version, here it is. Stay here because it’s great, they are great, the food was great, the location was great and the accommodations are very comfortable and well appointed. If you want all of the comforts of home (only better) when on vacation, this is the place for you! I elaborate on all those “greats” below, so keep reading if you are so compelled.

I would like to preface this by saying, that in my travels, I have stayed at many very nice, and well appointed 4 and 5 star hotels. Unfortunately, thanks to certain misleading travel websites, I have stayed at a handful of awful ones too! Simply put, my preference is to stay at clean, contemporary hotels that are convenient and provide good service.

I have never considered myself the flowery, old, bed and breakfast type, and frankly had no desire to ever stay at one. They seemed to me like the type of place my grandmother would want to stay, certainly not a young couple in their late twenties! So when my girlfriend insisted that we stay at a B&B in Napa, I was quite apprehensive.

Much to my surprise, well before our stay at the Inn on First in Napa California, I felt inclined to shower them with accolades simply based on their attention to detail and gracious service! Our hosts Jim and Jamie and their assistant Mercedes, immediately took it upon themselves to make sure that we had a wonderful trip lined up. From delectable dinner recommendations and reservations, to wonderful winery suggestions and reservations, they made sure that everything was taken care of upon arrival. I can speak to their hospitality ad infinitum, but I don’t want to bore you.

Both Inn keepers are artists in their own right. Jim’s artistry is served up on a beautifully delicious breakfast plate each morning, and Jamie’s canvas is their gorgeous early 20th century Inn, bringing contemporary elegance to a classic residence in the heart of Napa. The Inn is a living and breathing work of art that is growing and maturing with its owners as do all homes. Jamie has a knack for interior design and is constantly searching for ways to brighten spaces, integrate contemporary with classic, and overall improve on what is already great to begin with.

Jim’s breakfast is wonderful, and made waking up exciting each day! We both looked forward to the wonderful assortment of fresh fruit, fresh baked pastries and hot entrées each morning. Jim masterfully creates delicious hot breakfast plates daily, sure to never serve the same thing twice to a client! Jim’s goal is to bring the diversity of dinner to the breakfast table, and it is quite a culinary experience.

Our original reservation was for a 3 night stay. We then drove up the coast to Mendocino County for a wedding for 2 days. After the wedding, we cancelled our hotel reservations in San Francisco and we stayed another 2 nights at the Inn on First because they were all so great. Need I say more? Just relax, enjoy and have fun.

This was our first experience with a B&B. Jim and Jamie were such gracious hosts. Their attention to detail was amazing. Jim makes the BEST breakfasts in the world, so delicious and light. Jamie was a great source for us as far as what wineries to visit and what to do around the Napa area. I would highly recommend staying in their B&B. We stayed in Angel Share, one of the rooms in the main mansion. The only word of caution is that Napa and surrounding towns are "sleepy towns". There is nothing to do past 6pm as all of the stores close. So it's all about visting wineries during the day and going to dinner and that's about it. We had hoped that we would be able to walk around town before dinner, but no such luck. Otherwise we had a great time in Napa celebrating our five year wedding anniversary.

We are setting the new standard for the American Bed and Breakfast Inn. This is not an inn for traditional B&B people. We are attracting the next generation who want great food for breakfast, well beyond the traditional omelets, frittatas, and egg bakes of old. This is where you get to experience a chef’s creative innovation each morning, one of his 110 recipes for breakfast, such as Corndog Omelets, Tomato and Egg Soup with Grilled Cheese Croutons, or S’mores French Toast with house made Marshmallows.WARNING: we do not cater to people who want to stay connected to the television. We purposely removed all televisions so that couples can enjoy the intimacy of whirlpool tubs in the rooms with gas fireplaces, or sit out in the garden sipping on wine and enjoying great conversation. Yes, WiFi is available for those who feel they must stay connected to the outside world, but our hope is that you will learn to leave all that aside to enjoy great Napa hospitality here at the inn and at the wineries. ... more   less
