It's hard to find a bad restaurant/bar in the Napa area. This is an area that takes its food and drink very seriously ladies and gentlemen albeit with a California attitude as a facade. I spent 6 weeks in Napa and had the opportunity to visit several restaurants more than once. Norman Rose Tavern was a big favorite. The waitstaff is highly knowledgeable about their wine and more than happy to steer you in the right direction without being condescending and without pushing you to the high end. You're much better off cheerfully admitting your lack of knowledge than being pretentious. You'll get a lot more assistance and a better deal that way.
The food is not too complicated and I had most of the dishes on the menu or had a taste from my various companions' plates and everything was absolutely delicious. Lunch is definitely calmer and quieter than dinner. It can get noisy during the popular dinner hour and hard to get a seat at the bar or anywhere else. And there are often a lot of younger singles during that time period which can be a plus or minus depending on your interest. There is a great neighborhood feel to Norman Rose and if you come here more than a few times the staff remembers you and treats you like a regular which makes it more fun. A definite add to the list of must dos while in Napa.
