Cascal has become a fixture in downtown Mountain View, and should not be missed by anyone who has the opportunity to bask in the amazing restaurants in this area. I'd probably rate Cascal tonight at 4.5 to 4.7 stars, but I don't have that option, and 5 is reserved for the very best.
High points - Many. The scallop ceviche is out of this world. Labondigas (spicy Moroccan lamb meatballs), and the Pork Belly were also fantastic! The Octopus salad may have been the best cooked Octopus I've ever had - perfectly done, perfectly seasoned, with just the right amount of vegetables to round out the salad.
Nits to pick - The Ensalada Mixte (Mixed Salad) was just a little plain-Jane. Seasoning was wonderful, greens were very fresh, assorted, and tasty, but it lacked texture. The croutons were well soaked in the dressing, and had lost their crunch, and there was no cucumber, pepper, or anything crispy..
The beer selection really fell flat. I'm a beer snob, and look for at least one nice IPA in a West Coast restaurant (West Coast IPAs rule!). Unfortunately, Lagunitas IPA in the bottle was the best of a thin crowd. Seriously - Lagunitas is brewed a little about an hour from here - why not get it on draft? Or one of the specialty Lagunitas beers, like Maximus or the seasonals, in a keg would be an easy get that would really distinguish Cascal...
Really enjoyed, would go back in a second.
The outdoor seating is fantastic unless it's windy. :^) (They have nice heaters for winter!)
