“In the middle of Nowhere Goodness”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

A friend and I decided to do the Pines to Palms highway loupe beginning in Palm desert on Highway 74 and proceeding around eventually to Banning. At about the 2/3 point you come into a small town with just a Post Office/cafe called the Mountain Center Cafe.
The menu is fairly extensive for a smaller place. The decor is "quaint" and rustic. Prices considering the remoteness however are reasonable and the food is very good and ample.
We both had the Classic burgers which are available any way you want them, even a choice of what type of cheese if you add cheese. They put the extra's like pickle, tomato and lettuce on the side and you can place them as you like in with the meat and melted cheese. Available are fries, col slaw or potato salad with the burger. There are lots of other sandwiches. Also breakfast is served from early morning to about noon. We were both surprised at the wholesomeness of the food. I had a piece of Home made cherry pie for desert. The 2 burgers, pie and 2 diet soda's totaled about $24 Make sure you stop here on this trip for good eats.

“Great Inexpensive Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2013

Just before entering Idyllwild on the road from Hemet is the Mountain Center Cafe, which serves a very nice breakfast at a great price. Heck, even the coffee is under a buck.

The toast is thick and definately home made or from a bakery - not the thin, store bought loaf. Friendly, attentive staff and better prices than Idyllwild. They even have gluten free offerings.

Give it a try when you are at the crossroads on the way to Idyllwild.
