KenZen Sushi Bar & Exotic Cuisine is one of the most unique restaurants in the world.
No Kidding! Not only does it serve the finest sushi I have ever had, they also have a separate menu of foods from countries around the world, like Thailand, India (love the Tandoori chicken), Mediterranean, China, Malaysia, Hawaii and more. Ever seen a restaurant with that combination of cuisine? Neither had I.
While I focus on the sushi, there was a New Yorker there who I heard comment that he had eaten steaks in the best N.Y. restaurants alll his life and that the N.Y. steak at KenZen was the best he had ever had.
The setting is in downtown Mt. Shasta, with a view of the incredible mountain. What a view! Entering the restaurant, you are greeted by the entire staff who say, "Irrashai," which means, welcome honored guest. As soon as you are seated, you are given a warm towel to cleanse your hands. A really nice and professional touch. The decor is an unique as the menu - a combination of Asian and Indian "old-world" influences and modern lighting and fine art from local artists. The sushi bar is made of exotic woods and there are many interesting things to observe on the walls.
The menu is extensive with the aforementioned international menu of specials, but its the sushi that really floored me. I couldn't imagine that a mountain town could have fresh fish, but was I wrong. KenZen has the freshest sushi I have ever had and I've been eating sushi for over 20 years throughout California and Hawaii, including LA and San Fran.
The Japanese trained chefs are artists with sushi. Its truly edible art. The fish, I am told, arrives from different sources around the world and is delivered FedEx overnight from anywhere. They have it all, uni, toro, live abalone, saba, ankimo (monk fish liver), fresh oysters, Hawaiian specialty fish and loads more. I was told by the locals that the miso soup is the best in the world, but I ate too much sushi to save room for it. I've never tasted fresher fish.
When talking to the locals, most of them were transplants from LA or the SF Bay area.
They all said it was the best they have ever had as well. Even two Japanese guys were at the sushi bar. They said it was better than in Japan. No kidding.

It's worth the drive to Mt. Shasta just to try this place out.
