“The superb view does not offset the poor food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

We have lived in Mt. Shasta for almost 20 years and have dined at the Highland House Restaurant many many times. Unfortunately, this restaurant has never lived up to the gorgeous views and beautiful interior. The food quality is sort of like a roller coaster...sometimes it is quite good but more often than not, the food is mediocre at best. A few weeks ago we dined in a party of six. We so much want to frequent and support the local economy of Mt. Shasta but this restaurant is often at the bottom of our list of choices. One couple in our group ordered the petite rib-eye steaks from a "winter" menu (not the full menu offered now only Thursday-Sunday). The steaks were about 1/2 inch thick and certainly didn't look or taste like rib-eye steaks. They were tough, overcooked and lacked any flavor. The asparagus was on the raw side and just poorly prepared. The mashed potatoes looked like boxed potatoes and were gummy and don't ask about the dry gravy on top. Others ordered the eggplant parmesana which was served with a heavy penne-type pasta side-dish. The eggplant was okay but lacked flavor and was hardly a stellar dish. Fortunately, the beverages from the bar and the dinner salads were tasty! As for our server, he was a kind and attentive young man. His sheepish looks as we ate our meals felt like a confirmation that he, too, felt sorry and embarrassed about the poor food quality and preparation. We so want to like this restaurant but it lacks the touch of a professional chef. This restaurant should be the crown jewel of all of the restaurants in Mt. Shasta but has never achieved that level as the Resort seems unwilling to hire and pay for a great chef with a creative vision. We have found over the years that the Resort pub and its bar menu is a much better choice for a meal. The bar has atmosphere, a great staff and the food is almost always in the good to very good range. It will be a long time before we return to the Highland House Restaurant which seems to be the mantra of most permanent residents of the area.

“Great meal!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

We went to the Highland House because it was included in our package deal by staying at the Mt. Shasta Resort. The service was good and the food was great. I would recommend this place. The view was awesome and we saw deer on the golf course while eating our dinner.

“Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

The restaurant at the Mount Shasta Resort is o.k. The service is great, the food is good., the bar is o.k. to have a drink. We only had lunch in the restaurant once and it was certainly acceptable, not outstanding. We had drinks most nights in the lounge which we enjoyed. It's not fancy but it's a great place to have a drink after a round of golf.

“Located at the Mt Shasta Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Google Maps (as of Sept 27.2012 has the restaurant up the road a half mile or so. It actually is in the main building of the Mt Shasta Resort. The clue is they both have the same street address. Very pleasant with a nice view of Mt Shasta, over the golf course. Good American grub, I had the roast chicken. Not gourmet but consider the location. Wine by the carafe. We enjoyed it as we were staying in the Resort and did not have far to drive.

“Huge disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

We stayed at Mt. Shasta Resort a week ago and made the mistake of eating at their restaurant. My "Tombo Tuna" had less taste than old cardboard and the "fruit salsa" it was advertised as coming with consisted of one diced strawberry, period. A truly horrible culinary experience. It even managed to spoil the great view.
