We stayed at this B&B for just one night. It's in an excellent location, 6 miles north of Half Moon Bay. It’s a quick drive into town to restaurants and shops, but a short and beautiful walk to the beach and the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.
On our arrival we were given a tour of the Inn and information regarding the afternoon tea and breakfast times, which was helpful. The grounds and garden are lovely, and there are lots of benches where you can take a glass of wine and sit in the sun watching hummingbirds and butterflies come and go. There is a computer for guest use in a common area, and a jar of chocolate chip cookies on the reception desk that is always full (and greatly appreciated by one of us).
We stayed in the Tartan room (interestingly there was not a shred of tartan anywhere in sight). This mid-priced balcony room is a good choice for those seeking quiet, as it is on the top floor (no one above you) and at the end of the hall (only one room beside you). The room is nicely decorated and fairly large, though the bathroom is on the small side. The mini-fridge contains complimentary soft drinks and a bottle of chardonnay. The room also has a wood burning fireplace (though we didn’t use it), an iron and ironing board, and a TV with DVD/VCR and lots of movies available to borrow.
The only negative thing we could say about the room is that the bathroom needs a serious update, as it’s getting a bit tatty around the edges. In fact, the soap dish in the shower and the tile to which it was attached actually fell off the wall while I was showering. The bathroom is functional, but for the price point we expected more luxury.
Afternoon tea and hors d’oeuvres are served from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., and included cheese and crackers, grapes, a vegetable tray and cake. Breakfast is available 8:30 – 10:00 a.m., buffet style. There are two large, round tables, rather than tables for two, so you are obliged to engage in chit chat with your fellow guests over breakfast. The menu included artichoke quiche, bagels and toast, mini-muffins, fruit, granola and oatmeal. The food was of average quality – fine but not gourmet.
Overall, this is a nice place to stay in the summer for its lovely garden and proximity to the beach, and if the bathrooms were remodelled it would be just about perfect.
