The minute we walked into Seal Cove we shrugged off the troubles of the day and just relaxed. The service, the PEOPLE were just fantastic. It was like stepping into a small English cottage and finding that outside was a small garden of lovely peace.

I can only say that we would reccomend Seal Cove Inn to all of our friends and indeed have done so since our return home.

If you want a very quiet place with a lovely garden and welcoming staff, then stay at Seal Cove. We intend to make it our regular spot to stay each year. It was our anniversary.

We stayed at this B&B for just one night. It's in an excellent location, 6 miles north of Half Moon Bay. It’s a quick drive into town to restaurants and shops, but a short and beautiful walk to the beach and the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

On our arrival we were given a tour of the Inn and information regarding the afternoon tea and breakfast times, which was helpful. The grounds and garden are lovely, and there are lots of benches where you can take a glass of wine and sit in the sun watching hummingbirds and butterflies come and go. There is a computer for guest use in a common area, and a jar of chocolate chip cookies on the reception desk that is always full (and greatly appreciated by one of us).

We stayed in the Tartan room (interestingly there was not a shred of tartan anywhere in sight). This mid-priced balcony room is a good choice for those seeking quiet, as it is on the top floor (no one above you) and at the end of the hall (only one room beside you). The room is nicely decorated and fairly large, though the bathroom is on the small side. The mini-fridge contains complimentary soft drinks and a bottle of chardonnay. The room also has a wood burning fireplace (though we didn’t use it), an iron and ironing board, and a TV with DVD/VCR and lots of movies available to borrow.

The only negative thing we could say about the room is that the bathroom needs a serious update, as it’s getting a bit tatty around the edges. In fact, the soap dish in the shower and the tile to which it was attached actually fell off the wall while I was showering. The bathroom is functional, but for the price point we expected more luxury.

Afternoon tea and hors d’oeuvres are served from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., and included cheese and crackers, grapes, a vegetable tray and cake. Breakfast is available 8:30 – 10:00 a.m., buffet style. There are two large, round tables, rather than tables for two, so you are obliged to engage in chit chat with your fellow guests over breakfast. The menu included artichoke quiche, bagels and toast, mini-muffins, fruit, granola and oatmeal. The food was of average quality – fine but not gourmet.

Overall, this is a nice place to stay in the summer for its lovely garden and proximity to the beach, and if the bathrooms were remodelled it would be just about perfect.

  • Liked — great location, walking distance to beach
  • Disliked — bathroom needed updating

Just spent two wonderful days at the Seal Cove Inn with a female friend while both our husbands were busy with other things. The Inn is beautiful and serene. We enjoyed the garden, the peaceful setting, and the food.

Breakfast offers great choices, from healthy (Irish oatmeal, fruit, plain yogurt) to indulgent (quiche, freshly-baked muffins). If you are on a diet, avoid the commons room from 4:30 on, when the "sweet of the day" is put out. One day we were there, it was peanut butter chocolate squares. The second day, it was almond tea cake.

Rooms are spacious, clean, and attractively furnished. Loved the easy-to-light firewood bag (all you have to do is light the bag, and you get a beautiful fire of real wood). I will say that if you don't want to hear people walking above you, do not book one of the ground floor rooms (called the Garden Rooms). I could not hear my room neighbors talking, but I could definitely hear people walking, moving luggage, opening dresser drawers, etc. above me. Next time, I'll pay a little more and get a 2d floor room. Another reason to avoid the Garden Rooms is that they are near the check-in desk/manager's desk, and noise carries into these rooms from that area.

There are good dining choices within 3 miles -- Cafe Gibraltar (Mediterranean, dinner only, I think) and Sam's Chowder House (lunch and dinner), both in El Granada, just south of Moss Beach. Do NOT go to the Moss Beach Distillery to eat. The food is awful and expensive -- but you might enjoy having a drink on the ocean-view patio, which has 3 firepits and cozy blankets.

  • Disliked — Hearing noise from the room above my room

My wife took me to Half Moon Bay/Moss Beach for my 65th birthday. She found the Seal Cove Inn online, liked what she saw and booked the property. We were very pleased with the results. The Seal Cove Inn was wonderful in every way. The accommodations were excellent, the staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was superb. We would like very much to return and probably will

Have stayed at the Seal Cove many times, so it was the perfect place to return to, three days after we were married.

Great place to get away from the world. but close enough to Half Moon Bay that we can go "hang out" when we want.

Morning meal is wonderful; so is the cocktail hour in the afternoon!

Rooms are wonderful, and you can hear the ocean, and on clear days you can see a bit of the coast line. The fireplaces in the rooms are a big plus.

Great staff. We consider them good friends.
