On a combined trip to return my son to school at CalPoly and few days off to travel to SoCal, my 2 teenage daughters and I stayed here two nights. Although there was nothing bad about our stay, I felt that I needed to write a review because the previous posts had built up an expectation that reality didn't meet. The staff was friendly, and the beds were comfortable. The room was indeed clean, I appreciated interior halls, and from the outside the place looks very nice.
However, I think if this hotel was not in the lovely beach town of Morro Bay, it's ratings wouldn't be as high. From my experience, Morro Bay is lacking in medium-range properties; there are really yucky places and there are really expensive places - and nothing was built recently. Because of the competition line up, this place stands out. Unfortunately, to do so, it only needs to be clean, moderately furnished, and reasonably priced (we got a weekday special - $79 1st night, second was half-priced).
The good news is that, as the many reviews indicate, they seem to be consistently providing above average accomodations for their guests.
A couple of last comments:
-- The continental breakfast was very standard - danishes, some apples, cereal, oatmeal, coffee.
-- Wine and cheese hour was a nice touch, although they were out of the sparkling apple cider when we stopped by.
-- Cookies available at other hours are the shortbread kind that come in a huge tin.
-- The artwork scattered throughout the property is kind of funny. They're reprints of various famous pieces, but they seem entirely out of place with the decor. It's like someone had a "clever" marketing idea but failed to really implement it fully. So you get rooms decorated in "Great Aunt Hilda's parlor" style with a random piece of modern art, for example. Interesting, but quirky.
-- I thought we'd have a better view, but our room (without a fireplace or jacuzzi tub) faced north with a view of apartments and the highway beyond it. Could hear the cars, but it wasn't loud or annoying.
-- It was a pretty easy walk to the Embarcadero, but isn't exactly "close."
Do I recommend staying here? If you want a reasonable rate, absolutely. If you want romantic luxury, unless you get their penthouse suite, you probably should spring for one of the nicer places in town.
