“Very Nice, Friendly Helpeful Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2014

First of all we LOVED the view from our room. You could see Morro Rock and the ocean and hear the seals at night. We arrived on the last day of a CRAZY heatwave and the hotel does NOT have AC. Even with the windows and door to the room open it was stifling inside. It cooled down the following day and everything was great. Staff was super friendly and helpful when we had issues with our room key not working. The location is an easy walk to the Embarcadero and main street bars/restaurants/shops. A 5 mile drive to the Elfin Forest Preserve and a 10 mile drive to Montana de Oro State Park. Lots of great stuff to see and do around Morro Bay and the Masterpiece Hotel is a perfect home base. They have a spa which we did not use and free wine/cheese in the evenings which we did. I've had better wine, but it was free so you can't beat that!

Room Tip: Pay extra for the upgrade, it's worth it.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel on our trip down the Pacific Coastal Highway. At first we were unimpressed with Morro Bay but then we discovered the Embarcedero with all it's bars and restaurants. And we loved watching the sea otters on the walk out to Morro Rock. And we had a great night out, especially stopping off at a local bar on the way back to the hotel where the locals were really friendly and we learned to play Shuffleboard. So we warmed to Morro Bay!

The jury is still out about the Masterpiece Hotel. It was a bit of a strange 'mixed up' hotel. On the face of it, it was more individual than the standard 'chain' hotel, which is something we seek out. Our room was spacious and had a balcony with a view of "the Rock", even if interrupted by the view of the car park, the busy road and the chimneys. The decor was 'quirky' and it had the potential to offer something a bit special but it didn't because the quality wasn't there.

We tried the afternoon drinks on the first day but the wine was obviously very cheap and not to our taste, and American cheese seems always to be a bit limited and synthetic so we didn't bother on the 2nd day. Similarly with the breakfast which was perfectly adequate (and I enjoyed making the waffles!) but really quite typical of a 'chain' hotel - which this isn't!! It didn't compare with our previous 2 nights in a 'non-chain' so we were slightly disappointed.

The location worked well for us - we went to Hearst Castle on our middle day and we were well placed for our final day which was to be a long drive to San Diego.

I'm not sure we will return to Morro Bay though I wouldn't rule it out. But if we do, I think we will probably look for a different hotel. I don't think they have quite hit the mark - though the potential is there to do so!

Stayed in room 225. Nice view of Morro Rock from small balcony. Street out front busy/noisy but with slider closed at nite no problem. Our room was spacious with King bed, sitting area with sofa, dresser for using top or drawers, table with 2 chairs in front of slider for nice view of Morro Rock. Room has fridge, micro and a coffee maker. Bath is nice size with sink and dressing area separate from tub/shower. Wine and cheese in evening nice touch and expanded continental breakfast in morning with waffles, hot and cold cereal and hard boiled eggs, muffins and pastries more than adequate. With Groupon or TravelZoo deals great value. Would highly recommend and hope to return soon. Service was exceptional and very friendly.

Room Tip: Room #225 with balcony and view of Morro Rock very spacious.

What a delightful, charming hotel. I can't wait to return. I just wish this group had a chain up and down California. Kind and helpful staff. Sweet amenities such as as the breakfast and wine and cheese in afternoon. The lovely indoor swimming pool and gym. Clean, clean clean. Thanks

We stayed beginning of January. Their sister hotel, La Serena, is our usual family vacation choice. However this year the family wanted to stay at San Marcos for their indoor spa. We go with 3 other families, typically 4 rooms in all.

Since the rate was so great my husband upgraded our little family to the suite on the top floor. Paid $10 xtra to get a roll away for the kids.
The suite was nice, not great. I honestly expected more for being their top, most expensive room. The shower was dingy, mold growing along the bottom. It was in need of a shower curtain, as water splashed onto the tile floor.
The spa tub was very large! We let the 3 kids in the family get in it with their suits on. They loved it! Make sure you fill the tub well past the spouts. They wave up and down circulating the water. If the level is too low, when the spouts angle up, it blasts streams of water across the room! We thought it was full enough, past the spouts level, but not after they angled up! Luckily we caught it quickly and cleaned up the mess.

This suite was large, giving the family room to gather after hours, without disturbing other guests. The room is on the 3rd floor and has its own staircase to get to it. It did make it difficult to hear if someone was knocking though, since the door is located at the bottom of the stairs. It was Very private, decorated like a palace room, with gold tones and cream bedding. Had a fireplace that works great, very warm. The kids were so excited and amazed.
I enjoyed having the extra closets, large exterior bathroom area with large sink/counter area and an additional bar sink. I never felt overwhelmed or cramped even when we were all up there. There were 9 of us this trip.

The bed was not as comfortable as my gel memory foam mattress at home, but it wasn't horrible. Plenty of blankets, sheets and pillows.
The view was great! Round shape room with Windows facing the rock was amazing in the morning. The patio faces the city side, that was a bit disappointing. There is a private exit from the patio to the hall near the dining area, but does not allow for re-entry with a key card. Would be a nice feature if they added one.

The standard rooms were so so. My parents were very disappointed as they remembered the rooms being very nice. Their room was not very clean. Telephone was sticky with food, mold in the shower, their toilet kept running & touch up paint was needed in many many places. My father does maintenance at a very nice best western in Oakhurst, CA so he is a true critic. The toilet had been "fixed" previously by someone wrapping a wash cloth around the cracked filler tube. They found the beds uncomfortable as well.

All in all, it's ok. Honestly, my father was so disappointed with our trip in February that we are making a special trip back this month (March) to La Serena. I guess you could call it a do over. Masterpiece is ok, but our home away from home is La Serena.

Our room was nice but a little outdated. No flat screen TV and the wifi never worked even after the front desk set it 3 times. Bed was very comfortable and thankfully we did not notice any car noise or room neighbors. The one thing I did not like is no elevator. I am a heavy packer and having to use our keys to even go upstairs and climb up long curvy staircase was a real pain. We really enjoyed the little dining room and the coffee. The wine tasting was nice but I agree about the red wine or lack thereof. Bathroom sink area small and with a microwave and coffee maker there was little room for our toiletries. We really enjoyed walking through the hotel and seeing all the art prints. They provide a listing.

Room Tip: We were on the south side and only shared 1 wall with another room. The supply room was between us...

The staff hid behind the front desk... No elevator, must walk flight of stairs.... You could hear the people next door to us , ahem, on their honeymoon? Not what you want to hear... Up the hill from the harbor on Main Street which is busy. Could also hear the guests in the room above us - even with the tv on. There are much nicer places... Happy hour was nice but food was scarce at breakfast and the hotel staff hides!

We are sorry to read of your dissatisfaction with your stay. As we are a smaller boutique style motel located within walking distance of the beach, it is perfect for honeymooners and we also have many guests who come to celebrate their anniversaries. We apologize for not meeting your expectations but we wish you happy travels.
