“Quiet and a great view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2008

We stayed one night at the La Serena Inn in Morro Bay on the way up the California coast. It was chosen for a combination of price and proximity to San Simeon (Hearst Castle). Not too far, but far enough away to obtain a reasonable price and it had a view of the water, in this case the bay and the Rock. It did not disappoint. Very friendly and helpful front desk staff. Quiet neighborhood, adequate parking and a clean comfortable room. Free wi-fi was a bonus. In room coffee, fridge, microwave were pluses. Breakfast ok if you want to have something before hitting the road. Fresh fruit, toast, pastries, etc. By opening the patio door, we could hear the faint barking of sea lions and see the Rock through the mist. Terriific setting!

Spent a recent night at the La Serena Inn while visiting Morro Bay. The room was average, nothing memorable. It was clean with the exception of some mold near the shower area. I found the woman at the front desk, who checked us both in and out, to be the most unfriendliest of all the different hotels we stayed at during this particular vacation. The hotel location is good, easily accessable by foot to the water front. A very meager breakfast selection is offered with the stay. If I was to visit Morro Bay again in the future, I would look for something a bit better.

I was disappointed in the La Serena. My sister has been going here for years and thinks its the best hotel. We stayed there 2 nights based on her opinions and thinking that the room price was indicative of a great place. My experiences are always based on what I expect going in. For example, if I'm booking at a Days Inn I think I pretty much know what I'm getting.

Our room was small, not superior or deluxe - wordiing that was used during booking. This property could easily decline into a "shabby" condition very soon if some issues are not taken care of. These would include: patio sliding doors that have to be muscled open and closed (fist sized hole in the sliding screen door), mildew in the bathroom on the wall, stained and discolored towels, public area carpets looking dirty and worn, in room chairs that are looking old and tired. Too many detractions from what could be and what once was an otherwise pleasant room and hotel make them (the detractions) a lasting memory.

This hotel is really great and such a deal. There is a great view of the rock from the balcony and I think there are some rooms that face it too, but we didn't have one. It's very comfortable, we'll definitely stay there again. I found that it is easier to make reservations here if you contact the hotel directly.

I was unfamiliar with Morro Bay and didn't have anything to go on but the reviews of the hotel I saw online. It didn't have a particularly high star rating, and the price was certainly much better than some of the surrounding hotels so my expectations were set pretty low. However, we were very pleasantly surprised at how nice the hotel is and appreciated their friendly staff.

The building looks to be much newer than many of the other surrounding hotel/motel properties. It is tucked away off of the main road in a mixed residential/business neighborhood. The next door business was a bank so there were no funny cooking smells or traffic noise in the evenings from that location which was nice since our balcony looked out over that side of the building.

The hallways were wide and bright with light. Everything was very clean. The room actually looked pretty much like the picture on the website. The in-room microwave and refrigerator/freezer was definitely a nice convenience. The bed was comfortable although the pillows were very flat and need to be replaced. The shower had good water pressure and there was enough hot water. We liked having a balcony and it was nice to open the door and air out the room.

The complimentary breakfast was a little subpar, just granola, fake cheerios, oatmeal, bad pastries, toast, fruit, coffee and juice... but that was not a big deal for us. There are several restaurants that serve breakfast within walking distance of the hotel and the refrigerator and microwave make it possible to have other things available. They offered cookies and snack mix with tea and sparkling apple cider in the evening which was nice.

The hotel location is just a short 3-block walk from the Embarcadero where many shops and restaurants are located and also just about a block and a half away from Old Town Morro Bay which also has a decent selection of shops and restaurants. There is also a trolley stop just outside the hotel. We felt very safe walking in the neighborhood from the restaurants in the evening.

It was pretty cool the weekend we were there so we didn't take advantage of the outdoor hot tub. We didn't hear anyone in the other rooms, but I don't know if that is because they weren't there at the same times as us or if they were quiet so I can't speak to how soundproof the walls are.

I checked prices on the hotel website and through Expedia and Hotels.com. The hotel direct booking site was much higher priced than the other two which had the same price. So it pays to do the homework and check out all of your pricing options before booking.

I would definitely stay at La Serena Inn again if I go to Morro Bay and would recommend it to others.

No plans and no reservations I came upon this hotel. I liked that it was not a chain. Planned on just checking the price and comparing with neighboring hotels but I was sold on the fridge and microwave. Kept my leftovers cold and heated them for breakfast.

I believe there is a sauna. For longer stays, I might want a place with hot tub or pool and not pink walls. Just fine for a short stay.

This was a last minute on-line booking. The hotel was great, a large, clean well presented room with a view of the bay.
Only a few minutes walk to the sea front where there are lots of restaurants.
Breakfast was limited but adequate.
Reception staff friendly and helpful.
