My girlfriend and I were traveling from Santa Barbara to San Francisco, so we decided that Morro Bay was a decent place to stop for the night. We found the Morro Crest Inn through a voucher we saw in a travel discounts catalog. It gave the price as $30/night.

After calling the woman at the front desk she told us it would be $55 as it was Memorial Day weekend, which was fine as we had expected that. She also told us she had a brand new room with a king bed available for us. Great!

When we arrived, she was pleasant enough, but did insist on payment by cash despite me giving my credit card number over the phone earlier. She bumped 10% tax onto the $55 making it $60.50 altogether. Still reasonable for Memorial Day we thought.

Our 'free continental breakfast' consisted of a store-bought fruit pancake and some coffee packets which she gave us, then told us to follow her in our car to our room. We were already at the motel, why do we need to follow her? She insisted we had been booked somewhere else and it was 'just 1 mile away'.

3 miles later we arrive at a totally different motel, nowhere near the area of Morro Bay. What's worse is that we weren't actually booked into any of the regular motel rooms either. She took us upstairs into her house, to her bedroom (we could see the pictures of her family on the wall) where she told us to wait for 10 minutes while she cleaned the place.

In fairness, the room was nice, but we felt very uncomfortable staying in a stranger's room and it was very unprofessional to start cleaning it in front of us. We kindly asked if it was possible to go back to the original motel. Yes, they did still have vacancy's but only with 2 queen beds. That was fine, that's all we needed. But then she tried to charge $10 extra for that.

After a lot of discussion she agreed to take us back to the other lodge, and when she met us at the front desk she insisted we pay $10 deposit to ensure that we only used one bed. If we didn't use the other bed, then we'd get the $10 back. So this woman was trying to charge us extra for what we paid for already!?!

I asked for my money back because I was starting to get annoyed by the whole situation. Every other motel in Morro Bay had availability, so finding alternative would not be difficult. She pointed to her 'no refunds' and 72 hours cancellation policy and was very clear that our $60 was not going to be returned. I persisted that she had scammed us, first with the breakfast, then with the location, then with the room. She then became very rude, told us we could use both beds, she was 'tired of this' and threw the keys onto the desk and walked off to her office, closing the door behind her.

Our new room was fine, clean with a nice bathroom and exactly what she should have given us from the start. I had never asked on the phone for a king bed, I said I would take whatever was available. So why she didn't put us in that room from the start is a mystery. I suspect that she saw a chance to take advantage of two students.

Best part of all is that in the morning, another customer walked past our window carrying some mini muffins and orange juice. Turns out they were giving out breakfast at the front desk to all the guests.

I'm sure some people have had a decent experience here but I would save yourself a potential headache and go somewhere else. This woman is rude even on the phone so if you call for reservations, beware.

  • Liked — The room we ended up in was fine
  • Disliked — The staff. Very rude and unhelpful.

I do appreciate the fact that when my party (of 10 in four rooms) checked in early 4/14 that they informed us that there was a wedding party staying there that night. However, that was pretty much the point where the good experience ended.

We were also in a wedding party (the minister was one of the guests) and when the reservations were made we made arrangments to have 3 rooms in a row because some of the party was eldery and there were some small children. When we checked in they double booked the rooms and seperated the rooms. When we asked to help fix this they threatened us with a cancellation charge. HUH?

At approximately 11:30 PM the other party showed up and the problems started. Children were running up and down the walk ways, loud music and loud people. On 4 separate occasions “WE” had to tell them to be quiet. They were all in the parking lot drinking and playing music. This disruption continued on until at least 2:30 AM-3AM. Then the party moved indoors and onto the walkways. Loud music kept playing and people kept slamming doors until 4AM. We tried to call several times, however the phone in room had no phone cord. We called on a cell phone and then got into an argument about the time the people next door checked in. I don’t care what time they checked in. The issue was because of all of this noise the entire group got 2-3 hours of sleep.

Finally, when we checked out it was brought up on 2 separate times by different paying members that the noise level was way too loud too late and all we got was “it was quiet when I checked”. If you would have bothered to have looked outside and seen the large group of approx 80 people outside drinking beer at 8AM in the parking lot you would've had a good understanding.

I didn't care what the place looked like I just wanted a place to rest for the night. I didn't even get that.

  • Liked — I didn't have to worry about ruining anything.
  • Disliked — Front desk wanted to argue about everything.

Stayed there for about 10 days over a couple weeks while I had extended business in the area. I chose the Morro Crest Inn because of the reasonable rates ($42 to $60 a night as I recall) and wifi availability. A motel with wifi is not easy to find in the SLO coast at these good rates. The owners live on site and are very accomodating for your needs - Ragina and Dennis were *really nice* and happy to give me local advice.
If you have a relatively antique laptop like I do, you'll want to request a room next to the office; better signal avaialble there.
I smiled after seeing a couple of the spruced-up rooms... not bland compared to a chain place. Comfy place, functional bathrooms, mini-fridge in the room, cable TV with the usual. You'll have a pleasant stay within walking distance to most of yout needs in Morro Bay, and support local business at the same time!

  • Liked — good price and wireless internet
  • Disliked — older building - hard to get to comfy temperature
  • Tips/Secrets: — better wireless signal when you're near the office

Nice place. My room was well furnished, decorated, and comfortable with a great price. A night here feels very much like a night in the guest room at the home of a family member. I was happy to find that my room was close enough to the front desk to take advantage of free wireless internet. My room had a fridge and coffee maker as well. If you're accustomed to luxury accomodations then you may want to look elsewhere. If you're looking for a nice place near the center of town for a good price, then consider staying here.

  • Liked — Room furnishings and docration
  • Disliked — There's noticeable street noise, but its not too bad.
  • Tips/Secrets: — Rooms near the front desk can use free wireless internet
