“good value, good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

We stopped in here for a quick bite on the 4th of July. My husband and I split the Super Nachos and left feeling completely stuffed. For $8.00 in downtown Monterey, that was an excellent deal. Their horchata is also pretty amazing.

“Great Mexican food for CHEAPS!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

This place is great. I especially like the atmosphere of the one in Sand City, but the food is just as good at the Alvarado St. location. I live in Monterey and when we eat Mexican food while traveling, we always compare it to Papa Chano's. You can get a very tasty burrito (I love the carnitas) with chips and salsa for about $7. These things are so big that if I have one for lunch, I don't eat dinner. My vegetarian wife also loves the place!

“More than expected!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

While passing through Monterey we looked for local favorite restaurants, as we usually do. A truly exceptional little treasure is papa Chano's. We checked out two stores, one downtown on Alvarado Street, and the one in Sand City. The downtown one is a store front with ample seating and parking in the city lot on the next block. The one in Sand City is an upscale but inviting family restaurant. Both require that you place your order at the counter but from there on the service is perfect. The Food was great, ample, and well presented. The prices are better than expected. A "carnitas" plate came with tortillas beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, for about $10.00. All you can eat chips and salsa and no one will bug you, no matter how long you want the table. Last thing, I live in the land of fine Sanora Mexican food and this food was as good or better than any I have ever had. (Best place is La Fogata in Hemet) Try papa Chano's, YOU WILL ENJOY IT!

“Awesome Burrito”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Stopped here for a quick bite on the way back to our hotel. Very basic, very authentic and very tasty!
The chicken burrito was HUGE and really tasty, the green salsa, especially, was delicious.
Chuck in a couple of ice cold cold Corona's all for under $15 and you can't really go wrong!
A great little find.

“Still there 15 years later”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

I was a language student at DLI from 96-98, and used to go to Papa Chano's often while I lived there. The burritos are huge and delicious! I went back to visit Monterey in 2004 and again in May 2013, and this place is still kicking! That says something about their food. Great location in downtown Monterey on Alvarado Street. They have a few beer selections, and also a salsa bar where you serve yourself salsa and chips. Try the pickled carrots... spicy and delicious!
