“good food, good service in a touristy location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

We've seen the sad, sad menu display several times at the foot of the stairs ...... and we've learned that restaurants in the the tourist zones in Monterey do not necessarily serve overpriced, bad food.

So, we decided to keep an open mind and give Sapporo a try, spurred by a restaurant.com coupon. And, instead of having a beer at Happy Hour at Peter B's, we were lured by the $4 draft Sapporo here.

We had a nice table next to the window, with a lovely view of the ocean and harbor. Our drink orders were taken and quickly delivered and then our meal order was taken. It didn't take too long to decide, since we had studied that sad menu downstairs for a little while .....

We ordered the gyoza appetizer ($5), tonkatsu dinner ($15) and teriyaki beef/tempura combination dinner ($20). The dinners also come with miso soup, salad and rice.

The gyoza had a good flavor and was not greasy. The meat tasted like a combination of pork and the right amount of vegetables (the way they should). The miso soup was a little thin and a llittle weak, without that characteristic shellfish flavor. The salad was fresh and crisp and the dressing tasty with a good bite of ginger. Sauteed vegetables also accompany the meal on the plate and were neither overcooked nor undercooked.

The food came at a good pace ~ we didn't have a long wait before the appetizer appeared; once we finished that, the soup came and then salad shortly afterwards. We did not have to wait nor were we rushed with food being piled on the table at the whim of the kitchen and/or server. Our food came when we were ready for each course.

The tonkatsu was a little lean and a bit dry, but that seems to be common in the US since the pork is leaner than in Japan. The breading was crisp and not greasy. The portion was easily 8" long and about 3" wide.

The beef was cooked as requested and tender, topped with sauteed onions, which were a nice touch. The bowlful of tempura was a meal itself - two shrimp, an onion ring, broccoli floret, cauliflower sprig, carrot slab, big green bean, a mushroom, slice of eggplant and a slice of something I can't remember the name of ... I think it was a satsuma imo, not quite a yam or sweet potato. I'm sure I forgot something since someone else got to the bowl before me !

Easily, we could have split the combination meal and skipped the second dinner. On the surface, the restaurant seems a bit overprice, but if you consider ordering a combination meal and appetizer, maybe adding a second bowl of rice, you're talking less than $30 for two people. Given the view and the great service and the nice, strong hot green tea, it's not too bad for a "tourist" restaurant. It's an even better deal when you can catch a restaurant.com coupon ! which made our meal $30 for two dinners, appetizer and beer, including tax and tip.

Pls note that they will automatically add 18% gratuity based on the pre-discounted price, but I don't find that to be unfair and it is listed on the website before you buy the certificate.

We didn't try the sushi, so we can't comment on what others have said about it .... we enjoyed the cooked meal, and that's why we are rating Sapporo a solid 4 (very good)

“Not bad, not good.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013 via mobile

Service is lacking, food is ok, and value is bad. I can say that you do get a lot of the not so good food. But the service is cold and the food is kinda bad. I've eaten there a few times trying to give it another chance, but no go. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

“Good food, fun "show", but not good for quiet conversation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

This is a fun party type of place. Part of the experience is watching the cooking at the table, and the food comes straight from the grill to your plate. But not a good place for intimate conversation -- the roar of the hood over the grill is pretty deafening, and even once the cooking is done at your table, it is going on all around you. Kids like birthdays here, and they do a big birthday parade if you arrange it in advance.
