“Affordable Monterey Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2008

Fantastic.
Their website does not begin to do this property justice.
Attractive rates and friendly staff combine to make this a place
to return to. View??--who cares. The room was first class plus.

We stayed for First Night and on a night that the hotel was full, I made a mistake on our reservation. They were wonderful on the phone and corrected the mistake. Had a 10+ experience in the lobby. Had the pleasure of the nice bedding that Larkspur always offers. Room was small, but nicely appointed and clean -- tho' not anything too special. Close to everthing. The new restaurant looked great, but didn't get there this time. We will stay again -- very good value.

My husband and I stayed there on Dec. 29th on the way down from Napa to Orange County. This place is getting revamped and they are doing a great job of it so far. The lobby, restaurant, and the new rooms (upstairs from the lobby) are really nice and decored as "Soft Contemporary Rustic" feeling. At the front desk we met Mike, who did an awesome job of getting us the best room possible. I'd booked this hotel through Travelzoo.com and paid a good price for a queen room. When we checked in, I didn't quite like the room (well, the bathroom wasn't updated and there was a slight "old" smell to the room). I'd gone back to Mike and asked if we can get another room instead. He showed us the new rooms upstairs from the lobby (gorgeous), but I didn't want to pay that much for the upgrade. Instead, he gave us a king size room, which was completely updated. Mike was awesome!! Thanks again!

Honestly, this place is a great stay and VERY well priced!! Even without Travelzoo's special, I would've booked this at their listing price. You can't beat it, especially with the location (walking distance to downtown Monterey), the wonderful service, and the complimentary teas, cookies (the best shortbread cookies), and breakfast (homemade pasteries & fruits). We would definitely go back and I would recommend the place to anyone headed out to Monterey.

Also, we were glad this hotel wasn't in the heart of Cannery Row. Downtown Monterey is great and the hotel is running distance (1.5 miles) to the Old Fisherman Whalf (we walked it at night and ran in the morning, so it's not that far). Also, there is a Trader Joe's a block down from the hotel, a great Thai restaurant (Siamese Bay Restaurant- 131 Webster), a nice bakery across the street, and many shops & eateries nearby.

Only disappointment-we had a couple with two young kids banging on the floor throughout our stay inside the hotel room. So, be aware the floors are thin. Possibly suggest an upstairs room to avoid all the noise.

  • Liked — Service, decor & style of lobby & restaurant, location
  • Disliked — Guests with kids upstairs, Queen Room

The bed was so comfortable, they offer a decent library of complimentary DVDs to borrow to watch in your room, and they have great bath products. I requested a quiet room and got one, and the service in the lobby was excellent. Try their gourmet infused water at breakfast! The location is also great if you're interested in the "Path of History" that goes down around the wharf area.

All in all Casa Munras made our stay in Monterey a total delight. I loved it that much.

We love the location and the price. The property is under going some constructions and can use some updating, especially in its bathroom. It is like a flash back to 1950's complete with pink tiles.

The attendant at the front desk is wonderful and most helpful; the breakfast coffee is one of the best hotel coffee (supplied from a local coffee roaster). The breakfast pastry is also excellent.

Other plus: free in-room Internet and comfortable bed.

If you want two beds in your room--watch out--the published rate is for a single bed room. You will have pay extras for rooms with two beds.

Just stayed at the Casa Munras. I have stayed there before because I like the location--easy access to wharf and walking paths. As other reviewers have noted, the hotel is being restored. I payed $118 for a double room. The room was small, but well appointed.

We ate at the new restaurant in the hotel. We started with glasses of sangria and were treated to piping hot pita bread with a choice of 3 dips--chopped olive, olive oil, and humus. Since the sangria was so good, we decided to try something else--I can highly recommend the clam choweder (with saffron).

The service in the restaurant was wonderful. We especially enjoyed our seat in front of the fireplace. There is also a very attractive outdoor eating area equipped with an artistic firepit.

It is great to get supreme customer service! The service goes beyond just the people. Every detail from perfectly flufed pillows in the lobby, to extra clean rooms with super comfy beds. My hubby and I had such a romantic time and we only told them once when booking it was our anniversary, and the entire stay was romantic from beginning to end. The location is perfect for a walk down to the wharf. We WILL stay again.
