I picked this hotel based upon the reviews I read here, appeared close to the Conference Center, and because I am a Best Western Diamond Elite member. Which basically means I stay at a LOT of Best Westerns.
This hotel fell short of the reviews I read and past experiences with other BWs. And when I rated this hotel I had to give it an average, as it wasn't quite poor but you can't pick half a button.
As a Diamond Elite you're supposed to get little perks when you book, upgraded rooms, a welcome snack, water, etc. Not here. Instead there was the honor bar and everything in the room came with a price tag. In fact everything at the hotel came with a price tag.
The rooms I received were on the first floor, facing Foam Street, and above the entrance to the parking garage. Very noisy.
I stayed for 4 nights for both a seminar that one of us had to attend and leisure for the rest of us. And I booked two rooms for our party of four. By the time I was done paying for all the extras I spent a LOT of $$$$.
I was led to believe it was a "Pet Friendly" hotel and one of our party (an elderly woman with her small companion dog) needed this. Normally when booking "Pet Friendly" she receives some sort of goody for the dog. Anywhere from pet bowls being in the room to use, pet rugs for them to lay on, dog treats, doggy doody bags for their messes on walks, etc. Something to make it seem like they really do welcome dogs. Not here. And for the extra $30 (one of the highest pet fees I've paid at a BW) per night that was charged for her to have her dog that should have been provided.
Parking, I've read many reviews saying the parking was various amounts. Anywhere from free to $15 I think one said. It is not free. Not even with a handicap plate. Maybe they change the prices to suit the time. But for us it was $13 per day, again, no discounts for being a member. Oh and if you're a low profile vehicle you will probably bottom out trying to get into the garage. It's under the building. They have signs.
Rooms, as stated above we needed one doggy room. I was told by other guests after being there that the first floor was the doggy floor. That was all well and good but I told them at booking the rooms need not be together as I did not have a pet. But they put us next door to each other anyhow. I can see why these would be the pet rooms. They were of good size, I'll give them that, but they were wood and tile floors throughout, no carpeting. I see where that makes housekeeping's job easier in the event of an accident. But otherwise, they were very cold on the feet and echoed loudly. Especially when it sounds like a 500 pound person with combat boots is stomping around overhead.
Then there is the water noise. I could tell every time the neighbors from the other side went to the bathroom or took a shower as we could hear the noise of water going through the pipes behind our heads while laying in bed. I say this only for those who may be light sleepers, it is enough to wake you.
Our rooms came with little balconies. A nice touch I thought and maybe was going to score points with this. But upon opening the door I found that although very nice, new, patio furniture had been put there the patio itself had not been cleaned in a very, very, long time. Along the walls there were run stains from what could possibly be either pet urine, or human spit. The floor of the patio was covered in green moss/mold (yes it's by the ocean but you can clean it off). And the floor drain was packed with dirt, so even if they did clean, the water wouldn't have gone anywhere. It was not relaxing at all and was not used. And if it was clean enough to even sit at you still had nothing to look at but cars going by and the store front across the street. No view at all.
I read many of the management form letter responses to other complaints stating they were rehabing the place and new beds were forthcoming. I do not know if my room had a new bed or not, but either way it was extremely uncomfortable. I tossed and turned the whole time as I would wake up every couple of hours sore from pressure points.
The bathroom was an interesting configuration, there were two sinks, one in with the toilet and bathtub, the other outside by itself. Good if someone needs to brush teeth or what not while another showers. The shower however was not adequate. We are not tall people by any means and the shower head was so far down the wall that even aimed as high as it would go only sprayed the chest area. No way to wash hair without stooping down. They had a hand held attachment on it but that was of no help as it was lower still. They need to put the main head on one of those goose neck pipes to raise it up. AND they needed to clean the shower heads from the deposits.
The room did come with a little fridge that had water, soda, juice bottles already in it (for a price). And we had to remove them in order to keep our own water bottles in it. I guess this would be nice to bring back your leftovers too, except, there is no microwave to warm anything. I also found this odd as the hotel says its for families but if you had an infant who needed a bottle at 2 a.m. this would pose a problem. Just a thought.
It did have a nice desk area with plugs for doing work at. It was a long cabinet type piece of furniture that contained the fridge, desk, and dresser. The television was mounted to the wall and above the fireplace. Our room had two chairs and a little table that you could sit and read at.
Social hour, that was held every night from 4:30 to 5:30. They had either red or white wine to pick from. One cheese (the flavor changed each night), apple slices, crackers, lemonade and iced tea. This was probably the nicest thing about the hotel. And the gentleman that was pouring wine was very friendly. Greeted everyone with a smile. I looked forward to 4:30 every night.
Hot tub, when I booked the hotel stated their amenities included a hot tub. However, after I got there and went looking for it all I found was signs saying it was out of order. Nothing was said that there was not one anymore.
Staff, this was hit and miss. A lot of the employees were very friendly, pleasant, and appeared to enjoy their jobs mostly the housekeeping and food staff and a couple of front desk men. And then there were those that appeared as though they didn't want to be bothered. I happened to run into two of those. Unfortunately they worked the front desk.
Breakfast, it was lacking. They put out omelette type things, but yet they are not filled with anything. So all it is is a scrambled egg shell. I found this odd, since they have cheese nightly why not throw some in the omelettes and make them omelettes, the other BWs that use these do. Then there is sausage, french toast, hard boiled egg, muffin, bread, english muffins, yogurt, bananas, a couple of premade cereal bowls, milk, juice, coffee and tea. No pastries. The muffins were not fresh. And the food choices did not change the entire time I was there.
Location. It is somewhat close to the Aquarium (the Aquarium is fabulous) about a half mile. And you can walk to it and Cannery Row. But coming back it is up some rather steep hills. So if you're elderly or not accustomed to walking this may be more of a chore than a nice stroll.
But if you don't mind a couple of minutes of driving the other two Best Westerns on the other side usually have better rates and one is even right on the beach.
Over all, this hotel has potential that it is not living up to. The rates and other fees charged are just too high for what you do get.
