“Good Family Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

We stayed one night in January 2013. The hotel is very close to the Aquarium and to Cannery Row. The staff member at check in was very helpful. We found our family suite to be very spacious, clean and comfortable. There were a few little niggles at this property - given the space, queen sized beds would have been lovely. And the charming breakfast room gets a bit cramped. But the breakfast options were generous and the food was tasty.

The Victorian Inn is what I think of as an upscale motel atmosphere. Its cleanliness, efficiency, etc. is excellent. What makes it a bit different is the friendly, helpful attitude of its staff. They have a nice wine and cheese tasting every afternoon and now and then you meet someone there who is outgoing enough so that you can enjoy their company. The place is several blocks from the famous aquarium and cannery row and about 1/2 mile from fisherman's wharf. Bike and kayak rentals are not too far away. I highly recommend the whale watching trip from fisherman's wharf. Grey whale migration takes place in January/February and I'm looking forward to trying it for the second time next week.

Excellent location as within walking distance to the aquarium and downtown. No need for a car.
the staff is very friendly and goes to great length to help one. We have been staying here for over 10 years and always enjoy our . The fireplaces in the rooms are a nice touch for the winter rainy days.

Room Tip: Ask for a courtyard view

We frequently visit Monterey and have stayed at various places. This was definitely one of our favorites. It is close to walk everywhere. The hotel was quiet, the fireplace delightful. We will stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor, floor above us had small children jumping from bed to floor at 7:00 a.m. We like...

The fine location on fairly quiet street half-way between Aquarium and Wharf (10 minute pleasant walk to wide variety of restaurants – ask desk clerk for recommendation that includes free appetizer) helped justify a room price of over $200 a night. The back room we specifically reserved was occupied, so a comparable room on the street was provided and the accommodating desk staff volunteered to move our luggage on 2nd day. The room was not as noisy as we feared, so we stayed there. This premier double room offered a high ceiling, plenty of room, lovely fireplace, bright lighting, 2 sinks, refrigerator, honor bar, huge flat screen TV, great sitting area in bay window with a table big enough for 2 laptops. Free slow Internet was offered with $4 upgrade for faster service. Despite TA reviews indicating we might not find seating at more than adequate breakfast, we had no problem.

The shower did need water pressure, a dresser with drawers that didn’t pull off when pulled out (as it was, dresser was non-functional), plus signage as the layout is odd thus finding one’s way, frustrating. I’d certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Splurge for the large premier room with fireplace. 2nd floor even on Foam Street was quiet.

IOM-ManagerResponse, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Victorian Inn, responded to this review, January 25, 2013
Hello DulciTraveler,

As I say to all of our guests who leave review – thank you. Thank you for staying with us, and thank you even more for taking the time to share your feedback.
I am happy to hear that, though the same room wasn’t available during your whole stay, both rooms you stayed in were comfortable, and left such a positive impression. Regarding your comments about the dresser, please know that we are in the process of replacing the dressers in all of our guest rooms. Many have already been upgraded, along with the other furniture and décor, and the remaining rooms will be completed by the first weeks of February.
We are all very proud of the changes, and I hope that you will join us again soon so that you can see and experience the upgrades for yourself.

Thank you, again,
the General Manager

Booked this hotel stay for 3 nights over New Year's. Online reservations were a breeze, and the hotel is easy to find and incredibly convenient for sightseeing and touring in the Cannery Row/Aquarium neighborhood. Parking underground is a nice touch as opposed to on-street parking, but we found $13 per day a little steep. Also - we noted that the garage is not secured, which means neither are the elevators up to the guest room areas. Hmmmm.......

We had a king bed room on the 3rd floor. Room was spacious and there were some nice amenities, such as the fireplace and balcony. The 42" screen TV over the fireplace would have been outstanding, but some channels had poor/snowy reception.

The free internet was adequate for basic browsing. However, if you wish to stream any videos, there is a premium option ($3.99/day) with a supposedly faster connection. This connection was not fast enough for smooth streaming of videos, and we never could get Netflix to connect at all. We know the problem was on the hotel's end, because we called Netflix when we could not stream, and their response was "Sometimes hotels route their signal outside the country, thus blocking the Netflix connection." No idea if this is the case with this hotel, but it was a persistent problem.
Also, when trying to upgrade to the faster plan, there were navigation problems. Eventually we just gave up.

Decor is okay. I know the hotel is undergoing upgrades (read it in manager's responses here). Bathrooms have outdated tile and counters. Pillows on bed were nice, but linens could also use some upgrading. Maybe a down comforter? Also, electrical outlets need reworking - they are inconveniently placed throughout the room. The hotel did provide a power strip upon request.

They should advertise their free breakfast as a "full" breakfast and not as "continental" - they have hot items such as eggs and sausage. A very nice surprise. When we went looking for a vending machine, however, we were told that there were none in the hotel. The locations of several convenience stores were made available, along with a suggestion to use the in-room snacks.

Even though it sounds like we are complaining a lot, we did enjoy our stay overall and would probably stay here again, if the above problems were corrected.

Room Tip: Request a room on the 3rd floor if possible. Ground floor rooms are pet-friendly, and we did hear s...

Not only is this place pet friendly, the location is excellent. Just off of Cannery Row, all of four blocks from the Aquarium. Beautiful location for easy walks in any direction. Dog was accepted with open arms, and the staff was just outstanding. Michele at the Front Desk is great and very helpful.

Fireplace in the room was a wonderful addition, bed was super comfortable. Pillows were a big too stuffed for my own comfort, but my husband loved them. Didn't eat breakfast here, but wish we had, it smelled delicious.

This is a great place to stay while you enjoy the sights, tastes and sounds of the area.
