“Loved it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2007

My mother and I stayed at this hotel recently and really enjoyed it. We really liked the decor, it actually reminded me of some of the places I've stayed in Charleston, SC. It was comfortable and homey. All of the staff were extremely helpful. As one other reviewer stated, you do sometimes feel like you are constantly tipping people. However, that is part of a vacation to me. You can always decline help moving your luggage, etc. if you want. It is really a beautiful hotel and our room and bathroom were very spacious.

We did not eat at the hotel, walked down to the Mexican Restaurant down the street, so I can't comment on any of the food. Overall, we really enjoyed the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa and would return!

Stayed here recently in September of 07. I have to say was very disappointed. We drove up to the hotel and thought wow so charming!! until we went inside. The outside of the hotel has winding floral vines up the side of the building with sliding doors opening on to balconies, it completely fools you. You walk in and you think, wait what just happened? it was like walking into a corporate Marriott. So much so, that there were a couple of morgage co. conventions going on. The place is clean but needs the same face lift the exterior has been given. The hotel itself is shabby inside needs new everything! Oh and when you do redecorate, please get an interior designer that doesn't shop at TACKYRUS, thanks! The rooms don't even have air conditioning just a white tacky fan you buy at the Home Depot. You think well Monterey is cool you don't need AC; true, but sleeping with the balcony door open on the top floor and hearing fire engins at 2:00 am is not exactly relaxing. The restaurants were gross just like walking in to TGIFridays which is ok if you are going to a TGIFridays, not a hotel restaurant. The other restaurant the Duck Club is a goose, it needs a serious face lift -tables, chairs, carpet not great /not even good. Can we talk about the food, reserved a breakfast package ( yeah this is probably the only way they get rid of the food which seems to be all cooked on the same griddle! Had the calamari the night before/pancakes tasted the same the next morning- NOT KIDDING) Didn't take pictures didn't want to waste the film! Do yourself a favor stay at the Monterey Bay Inn next door and go out to dine.

We travelled to California in June and our 3 nights in Monterey was the highlight of the trip. This hotel was worth every penny. We had an oceanside room and slept with our sliders open (screen shut) and went to sleep with the sound of the waves and sea life outside. No AC needed. The room was fantastic, the Duck Grill was excellent - defintely get the breakfast package - it was well worth it. At night after sightseeing we would have a drink on the deck at the Duck Grill. I spent a day enjoying the penthouse spa with the unbelievable ocean views while my husband and son went biking. If you want to be indulged, this is the place!

let me start by saying this is a great hotel. a bit on the expensive side, but you definitely pay for quality. everyone at the front desk, valet, and other hotel staff were very helpful and kind. i recommend getting breakfast included in the rate. food at the duck club grill was very good. service for the most part was good, except they were a bit slow refilling our drinks. wildlife noises (seagulls, sealions) could be heard from outside our room throughout the night and early morning. we didn't find this to be too bothersome. this hotel doesn't have air conditioning (most of the hotels in monterey and carmel don't have a/c), so we just kept the windows opened, which helped alot, but also allowed the wildlife noise to resonate even louder. all in all, i don't think there is a better hotel in monterey. location is great. if we ever come back to monterey, we know where to stay!

This is a lovely hotel, but I definitely would not return anytime during the summer months or during a "warm spell." Like previous posters have mentioned, the rooms get very hot, even at night and the lack of A/C in such a nice property is a bit shocking to me. (We heard they are working towards a 5 star rating, so when that happens I'm sure they finally install the A/C!)

Service is excellent - everyone from valet, front desk and housekeeping to servers at the restaurants were all professional and friendly.

We had breakfast at the Duck Club one morning - beautiful bay views and again, very professional service. Our omelettes were delicious and beautifully presented. Also enjoyed dinner and drinks on the outdoor patio at Schooner's. We had a lot of fun!

We used the rooftop spa and steam room a lot and loved every minute of it. (Great photo opps!) They offer fresh fruit and lemon ice water, which is a very nice touch. There's not room for too many people to lay out up there, so it remains peaceful and quiet. Definitely NOT a place for young kids to run around.

My boyfriend and I had the "couples massage" and were so relaxed afterwards we could hardly find our way back to the room. My only complaint would be that the spa closes too early - 8pm. During the summer, the sun has barely set at this point!

Our first 2 nights we were in one of the non-ocean view rooms. We were very happy with this room except for the temperature. We did leave the windows open at night, but this wasn't enough. However, we enjoyed the hotel so much otherwise that it wasn't worth it to me to focus on it.

On our last night, we happened to talk with the front desk manager, just letting him know how much fun we'd been having, etc. and he offered us a complimentary upgrade to an ocean view room. It was a nice surprise and we were very thrilled at his offer.

We enjoyed our new room for about, oh, 20 minutes or so. At that point, the DJ downstairs started up his music (this was around 8pm) and it was SO loud and irritating that we couldn't even have our balcony doors open to enjoy the sounds of the ocean or the COOL breeze that we finally got to enjoy!! We kept thinking, "Oh, this can't possibly go on past 10 or 11pm, then we'll have some peace and quiet." AFterall it was a Sunday night, and with all the guest rooms surrounding the DJ area I didn't see how everyone wasn't complaining.

Long story short, this music did not stop til 1AM, but we could still hear the drunk partygoers down there, screaming, laughing and talking until 2AM. We would have demanded to have our old room back had we known this would go on for so long - looking back we should have called the front desk and asked what could be done. I guess we were just tired and didn't want to deal with changing rooms again...

The point of the story is, if you are booking a bayside room, perhaps ask if there are any parties planned for that night. Either that or pray that they play something better than awful gangsta' rap!

But overall, a beautiful and romantic hotel and definitely a place I would like to return to in the late fall or winter.

We stayed here for 2 nights and the service and staff were wonderful!!! Everyone seemed to have memorized our names every time we came down to get our car, get directions or just walking around the property.
Now for the would a... probably spent my money elsewhere the service was great, but we were throwing money to people hand over fist every time they did something for us. There was no A/C which would of made our "nice" room 100x's more enjoyable. Could a ...stayed in Carmel and had just as nice of a stay and spent less. If you want to use the jacuzzi you need to pay $30 each day extra. Unless of course you get a $60 manicure or spa service. And it closes at 8 pm. And should a... known being right on the Monterey Bay each morning the sea otters woke us up with their yelping. (We had to leave the windows open or we would of melted from the heat in our room.) A few pluses are that you are walking distance to the Aquarium, Cannery Row and Fishermans Warf.

It's a lovely place in a great location, but if you are on the inland side, as we were, the lack of A/C is a big issue. We were routinely uncomfortably warm, including when going to bed at 10 p.m. When asked for assistance, we were told we could get an extra fan. Well, in a nice hotel like that, it seems rather odd to be laying there with 3 fans blowing praying for a breeze through an open window. An upgrade would have been $150-200 more per night -- well, we didn't want an upgrade, we just wanted to be comfortable! Isn't that *their* problem? Not in their view. It was "warm for Monterey" that weekend -- well, welcome to climate change. We heard from guests on the ocean side that while there were lovely breezes, the sea lions barked all night. Bottom line, guests need to be able to control the room temperature in a nice hotel.
