“A Real Fireplace!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

We loved the Spindrift inn for the great location, friendly service and romantic ambiance! We upgraded upon arrival to an oceanview room and were SO glad we did! The room can feel a little small to walk around because there are two wingback chairs and ottoman positioned around a real fireplace. I have never seen a hotel with a real fireplaces before so we were thrilled (we even made smores)! The also make it idiot proof as well so you don't need to know how to make a fire :). The room also had plenty of little details that we loved: 1) window seat to sit and watch the water/beach and was a great reading spot, 2) binoculars, 3) clean wine glasses and cheese knife, 4) sleep sounds CD's, 5) breakfast provided in your room every morning, 6) nice bathroom with Aveda products, 7) very comfy bed that you sink into, 8) plenty of bath towels, 9) bottled water in the fridge (a rarity we found in California), 10) cocktail hour in the lobby, 11) rooftop deck accessed through the 4th floor, and 12) cheapest valet we found on our trip ($21 per night). I guess the only downside would be there is no A/C. However we slept with the windows open and were cool enough and had the real ocean sounds to put us to sleep. There are no screens on the window but we didn't have any bugs (or seagulls) come visit us.

Overall we loved our stay at Spindrift and would recommend it to anyone!

Room Tip: Choose an oceanview room!

This this the place to stay for couples. We booked a 3 night break in Monterey and took the recommendations from trip trip advisor and booked the Spindrift Inn. We weren't disappointed. Our room was great and the sea view fantastic. A real wow! My wife sat for hour watching for the sea otters and harbour seals. Add to this the log fire and it makes the experience unique. The only downside breakfast was a bit hit and miss (don't expect to get what you order!) but the sea view and the complimentary cheese and wine more than made up it. Also has a good roof garden which we took, advantage of for an afternoon nap - well why not! We shall look back with fond memories. A great experience

Room Tip: Must have a sea view!

My family and I stayed there just two nights, and were unable to get very much sleep between the outside street noise and the noise coming from the room above us, the hallway, and even the lobby. The walls and floors in this hotel are very thin, and we could hear the street noise through late at night and starting again early in the morning. Even could hear the people above us, and in the adjacent room at night. The lobby noise of people talking was even loud one night.

The room comes with a breakfast they serve in your room, and the service starts at 7:00 AM. Traveling with children, we tried to sleep in, but the service people delivering meals to other room woke all of us up before our requested 9:00 AM delivery.

Besides the noise, the view out of the windows were not of anything memorable. And with the very small room size, moving around is almost impossible for three people; even when one is a small child.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the street side; Cannery Row, as it is very noisy. I have no idea how the ocean room...

Green Features: We didn't see anything special. There was the standard sign about reusing towels, but that was all that we observed

To begin, I want to thank this reviewer for taking the time to share their feedback regarding their recent stay. I consider such feedback extraordinarily valuable, as it provides out best possible opportunity to make improvements.

Our goal is to make all of our guests feel welcome and to provide a comfortable atmosphere, and I sincerely apologize for anything that detracted from this guest’s stay. We have spoken with our staff in regards to noise created while delivering breakfast in the morning, as well as the transfer of sound during other times. We are looking into other ways to ensure that deliveries do not disturb other rooms, such as doorbells that sound only in the individual rooms. We are taking this guest’s comments into consideration in order to ensure that every aspect of our guest’s stay is comfortable and relaxing.

Again, I want to thank this reviewer for taking the time to share their comments. Should anyone wish to speak with one of our managers directly about a question or concern, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Thank you,
the General Manager

My wife and I choose Spindrift Inn from the many reviews we read on tripadvisor. We arrived around 5:00 pm and were greeted with a wine and cheese offering which was perfect. Our room was an ocean view with a king size bed and fireplace. Great view, along with our windows open and listening to the ocean was perfect. The staff was excellent and answered our many questions about what to do in Monterey. Great location on Cannery Row. The Monterey Aquarium is a must see and you can purchase your tickest at The Spindrift. Thanks for a memorable visit to the Spindrift we will be back.

My sister and I stayed overnight on a Friday in middle June. Truthfully, we had low expectations because we tend to be suspicious of lodgings in a touristy destination. We imagined being kept awake all night by the tourists in Cannery Row. We stayed in Room 304, a room with two queen beds and a fireplace/ocean view. Spend the extra money and get this type of room - the ocean waves were spectacular and we didn't hear the sounds of tourists around Cannery Row. I suspect that a room in the top floor (the fourth floor) would have been even better - the floors are hardwood, which means that if you are unlucky, you will hear the footsteps of an upstairs vacationer. We got lucky - our upstairs neighbor was quiet.

The beds were extremely comfortable - I give top marks in this area. The bathroom is quite nice - shower/bathtub. It doesn't have a Jacuzzi setting, though. The bathroom counters are not granite, but the sinks are in working condition. The gas fireplace is wonderful, the easiest one I ever had to use. The ability to add wood logs to the fireplace makes the smell more like a wood burning fireplace.

I was impressed by the wine selection at wine and cheese hour - at most bed and breakfast place, the wine is of very cheap quality and often results in a headache. I am a chemist by background and cheaper wines often have a higher fusel content. We were in a hurry to go to dinner, so we didn't have a chance to observe if they served hot savory food besides the cheddar, brie, and blue cheeses. If I were you, it is worth the 1-2 mile drive to go eat out in Pacific Grove - the restaurants there are of far higher quality than the restaurants/fast food places in Cannery Row. I've had wonderful dinners at Passion Fish, Il Vecchio, and Vivolo's Chowder House. To be fair, I didn't try the Sardine Factory or the Whaling Station in Cannery Row - these restaurants offer the walking distance advantage. I prefer to not eat at restaurants in touristy spots. The coffee at breakfast is weak - walk a block to Donut World and you will pay $4 for two cups of strong coffee. They only offer cold options for breakfast - the menu choices include hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, fruits, cereal, bran muffins, toast, and a quick bread. It would be nice if coffee/tea were served in the lobby.

The valet fee for overnight parking is $21 - fair enough - you pay double that in a San Francisco hotel. The service is extremely friendly even during busy check-in times. This place is very family friendly with the Cannery Row location, yet singles can also have an enjoyable time here.

Room Tip: If at all possible, get an ocean view room on the fourth floor to minimize noise.

Spindrift Inn is a wonderful located most romantic place. We had a lovely room with balcony and a fireplace and I wished we could have stayed longer.
The entire staff was extremely friendly and attentive. When arriving we got the valet service which is most excellent and guided to our room we got explanations on everything, even how to use the fireplace. In the morning breakfast is served to your room, which was a really nice surprise.
Wonderful experience, perfect place and highly recommended!
