“Wonderful unforgettable hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

We stayed at the Spindrift for three nights during a whirlwind tour of North California following a family wedding. It was an unforgettable experience and one of the most characterful and luxurious hotels I have stayed in- well deserving of its place as number 1 in Monterey.
From its website you can see it is decorated and furnished in a grand and plush traditional style with rich drapes, grand furniture and open fires in the bedroom which you can light if you need the warmth. The effect was fantastic – and our room quite beautiful with an amazing view from a window seat onto the ocean. The bathroom was lovely and traditional with a large bath and glass jars of bath salts etc.
The reception staff are incredibly warm and welcoming and service from the bell boys and car valets friendly and efficient.
The hotel’s situation in Cannery Row is perfect – just a few minutes’ walk from the amazing aquarium and some lovely shops and great restaurants. Monterey is also a great base for touring the neighbouring coast -you can visit the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, the !7 Mile Drive, the majestic Big Sur coast, and Hearst Castle from here.
It does not have its own restaurant which is probably an advantage because it makes you go out into the town and try different dining experiences! It does offer a quaint cheese and wine service in the lobby in the early evening with an excellent Californian wine selection which you can drink on the spot, in your room or on the roof terrace. However the lack of a restaurant also means that the breakfast served to your room is limited in choice and in quality and is perhaps not of the luxurious standard that a hotel of this price and quality would lead you to expect.
Altogether however this was the most beautiful hotel in a lovely and charming town.

I was looking for a nice, romantic overnight accommodation in Monterey on the shore near Cannery Row and walking distance to other main attractions of old Monterey when I came across Sprindrift Inn on Trip Advisor. This Inn is everything other contributors have said and was the reason I chose it. All the staff, from the valet to the wine steward at the happy hour were very pleasant, welcoming, and treated me like family. The receptionist, Renae, was especially helpful and answered various questions as to where to get the best fish dinner to getting tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. She helped with every aspect of our visit from parking our car to helping secure our bags after check out. And then to advise us of the happy hour wine and cheese that can be taken to your room or up on the observation desk, well, I knew this was the place I was looking for. We went to our room to find the most wonderful decor, feather bed mattress, fireplace, and a wonderful view of the Monterey Bay. What a wonderful night's sleep to the sound of the waves on the beach below to gulls squawking, and a cool ocean breeze. If you plan to visit, make your reservations as early as you can and seek out the third floor ocean view rooms. You won't be disappointed. And enjoy the breakfast delivered to your room as part of your cost, yes, its included.

Room Tip: Rooms identified as cannery row view will be street side and may have some street noise. Ocean view...

Stayed here as part of my honeymoon. We checked in late and the woman at the front desk went out of her way to help us out. She sent up a congrats card with a small box of chocolates. We spent the evening wandering around cannery row and then walked home to enjoy a bottle of local red wine by the fireplace with the bay window open to let in the cool ocean breeze.

The bext day we used the point as a spring board to visit Big Sur. We were able to spend all day exploring the parks and still make it back to Monterey to enjoy the fireplace a second time.

Great location, good service. Will def be back.

Loved everything about this place. Great views, rooftop deck, in room fireplace, great staff, free wine and cheese in the lobby everyday. Went there with my girlfriend and we would go back again. The hotel staff really makes you feel at home and you can walk to anywhere in Monterey from the location. It's a classic hotel.

We have been to the Spindrift Hotel in Monterey beginning of August.
Monterey in July-August (I learned that on site) is just like Wales in October : very cool and foggy (tourists should know that I think to avoid surprises, as the area is great anyway).
The hotel itself is just what we expected after having selected it in Tripadvisor's list of the 10 most romantic hotels in the US.

Just like for a good cigar or an expensive brandy, you have to prepare the action. As the hotel is just breakfast-in-the-morning-at-your-room, I suggest that you do the following :
- Buy one (or two...) bottles of good wine from Napa Valley (either from the local wine shop or directly on site, north of SF !)
- When arriving to Monterey, stop in Salinas valley or Hollister or even the Central valley if you have the opportunity to go through it, and buy a good selection of those gorgeous California fruits at a local farmers market, they are just great.
When you arrive at Monterey, again, be prepared. This summer : Salinas 110F, Monterey (2à miles to the west), 55F...But this is, finally, where lies the secret !

The hotel is right on Cannery Row (yes it is ! John Steinbeck, here we are !). Small but very welcoming lobby, nice people, I strongly recommand the Valet parking facility at roughly 20 $.
Then you get into your room. Have a walk around Cannery row, visit the aquarium, go around this fantastic California coast, etc. (Big Sur, Carmel). Return in the evening. Eat at one of the nearby restaurants, all are very good.
Then...
Imagine : cool, breezy, and foggy outside. You are staying in a large bedroom, you can't see the Pacific Ocean but you ear and smell it as your room has a great bow window over the beach right under the wall of the hotel.
You have a very nice fire (that you lit yourself), chanting and cracking in your personal fireplace, you sample a good glass of that wine, together with those gorgeous fruits...Enjoy ! (and maybe read some of John Steinbeck or perhaps, Henry Miller's best pages...)
Wuthering Heights ? No ! California romanticism...

I definitely recommand this hotel for couples (less easy for families I think). Very good selection by you Tripadvisor guys !
Must know : great bed linen, breakfast included (continental), roomy bedrooms. PLEASE ask for an ocean view (more expensive, but Wowwh !). Use the Valet Parking, Cannery Row can be extremely packed, specially at the peak season, and the guys are very helpful.

Beautiful property, comfortable room, and excellent service. Wine and cheese from 4 - 6 PM was a plus - and be sure to take it upstairs to enjoy the rooftop terrace with fantastic views overlooking Monterey Bay. Location is right on Cannery Row with easy walk to shops and restaurants.
