We stayed at the Spindrift for three nights during a whirlwind tour of North California following a family wedding. It was an unforgettable experience and one of the most characterful and luxurious hotels I have stayed in- well deserving of its place as number 1 in Monterey.
From its website you can see it is decorated and furnished in a grand and plush traditional style with rich drapes, grand furniture and open fires in the bedroom which you can light if you need the warmth. The effect was fantastic – and our room quite beautiful with an amazing view from a window seat onto the ocean. The bathroom was lovely and traditional with a large bath and glass jars of bath salts etc.
The reception staff are incredibly warm and welcoming and service from the bell boys and car valets friendly and efficient.
The hotel’s situation in Cannery Row is perfect – just a few minutes’ walk from the amazing aquarium and some lovely shops and great restaurants. Monterey is also a great base for touring the neighbouring coast -you can visit the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, the !7 Mile Drive, the majestic Big Sur coast, and Hearst Castle from here.
It does not have its own restaurant which is probably an advantage because it makes you go out into the town and try different dining experiences! It does offer a quaint cheese and wine service in the lobby in the early evening with an excellent Californian wine selection which you can drink on the spot, in your room or on the roof terrace. However the lack of a restaurant also means that the breakfast served to your room is limited in choice and in quality and is perhaps not of the luxurious standard that a hotel of this price and quality would lead you to expect.
Altogether however this was the most beautiful hotel in a lovely and charming town.
