“Best hotel on Cannery Row”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2009

The Monterey Bay Inn is the farthest hotel along Cannery Row from tourist attractions, which to me is an added plus, being that it is also on the ocean. The ocean view rooms and balconies are great. Rooms are very clean with contemporary decor. Staff is friendly and helpful.

What a fantastic place for a weekend with our grandchildren! We had rooms side-by-side with our son and his family. The rooms (208 & 209) were oversized and included a sofa bed. Room amenities included a flat screen tv/dvd player. Loved the view of the bay from our balcony! To order continental breakfast delivered to the room is a definite plus. A great way to start the day. On the quiet end of Cannery Row, but within walking distance of most everything you want to see! Hotel staff were engaging and very helpful.

When we first drove up to the front of the hotel, I was really worried - looks like a cheap hotel and run down. Lobby is OK - nothing special, but the room defintely made up for it. We stayed in room 320 - this is the top floor just under the rooftop jacuzzi (220 is similar, just one level lower). Floor to ceiling glass walls looking out over Monterey Bay - absolutely stunning. Binoculars are provided and you can see otters, sea lions, dolphins and loads of other wildlife. There is also a fireplace and a balcony with a partial bay view. We just sat there one night with the fire on and listening to the tide coming in and out. Really is a spectacular way to wake up in the morning.
Breakfast is complimentary and is served anytime between 7am and 10am. Realy basic but a nice start to the day.
Flat screen TV in room with DVD player (you can rent DVDs).

Best bit was the bathroom - two side-by-side basins and a HUGE jacuzzi bathtub positioned perfectly opoosite another floor to ceiling window with views over the bay. Suffice it to say that we had multiple baths every day! Bed is a king size and really comfortable.

Not the most luxurious hotel I have ever stayed in, but certainly one with the most spectacular views and that makes the best use of the space on offer.

Really enjoyed our stay here and would love to come back. All staff are really helpful too.

  • Liked — Views from room and jacuzzi bathtub
  • Disliked — Exterior is rather shabby

I had read the reviews of many hotels on TripAdvisor when I was considering our stay in Monterey and decided to try Monterey Bay Inn. The outside of the hotel is quite unassuming, yet when you enter their rooms.. the rooms defintely look like the photos you've seen from their website. The small details and choices in decorating the interior really make the space modern and upscale in comparison to othe 3-3.5 star hotel chains. The bedding was great and our OCEAN view was wonderful to have. To have our continetal breakfast served in our room and having coffee on our personal balcony was such a plus for our anniversary getaway. The staff surprised us during the evening turndown service w/ a special treat.. of wine and chocolates...THANK you Monterey Bay Inn for a great stay for our anniversary getaway!
The only thing that I would recommend is to possibly change the hallway carpets to tile!! This would definitely make the the whole place more up to scale...

  • Liked — The get a way feeling of the room
  • Disliked — the hallway carpets! !

The hotel had adequate parking when we were there. Not a sprawling estate, more like an upscale motor lodge. Room was clean and nicely appointed with marble bathroom counter, big shower and climate control. Easy walking to Cannery Row district and the waterfront. Nice view of the bay.

  • Liked — Proximity to historic Cannery Row
  • Disliked — Outdoor walkways, tight parking

My wife and I drove down to Monterey for the day, or so we thought. On a whim we decided to spend the night regardless of the fact that we had no no overnight bag. We planned on checking out hotels along the bay. The first one we came to was the Monterey Bay Inn. We were greeted by a really nice desk clerk, Juliana. It was because of her and her personality that made the decision for us to stay at the hotel. Juliana also made reservations for us at the Chart House Restaurant where we were treated as VIPs. The room we had was fantastic and the views were spectacular. I recommend this hotel to anyone.

  • Liked — The View from the room and the amentities
  • Disliked — Couldn't think of anything

Given the relatively pricey market of Monterey accomodations, I recommend the Monterey Bay Inn. It's not cheap (cost or amenities) but it's not luxury (cost or amenities). The full ocean view room was nice (#215). No bother from people, traffic or sea lion noises. Just the birds every now and again and the pounding of the surf. The spa was fine, but seemed a bit "cheaper" than the hotel deserves. Same for the continental breakfast. Monterey Bay Inn is not in the lap of luxury, but it's a nice, relaxing stay. It's comfortable and not outrageously priced.

  • Disliked — No business center
