“Friendly staff, very sub-par hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

The staff was friendly and professional. Unfortunately, that's where the praise ends. For starters, the Mariposa Inn is basically in the parking lot of a mall. It's a bad location. But it's not an expensive place, so I didn't expect a fantastic location. The room itself was tidy but dirty - stains on the sofa & carpet. It's the sort of place where I felt compelled to search for bedbugs (I didn't find any evidence, though I don't really know what I'm doing in such a search). There were bloody looking stains on the comforter. The sheets were too small for the bed so that over 12 in of the mattress was exposed at the foot of the bed. The breakfast room was filthy - the food was typical though there was not one item that couldn't sit on a shelf or in the freezer for a month (no fruit or anything remotely healthy).
I woke up from a nightmare that bugs were crawling on my skin. I'd have gladly paid for a more expensive hotel for a less skeevy experience.

We stayed at the Mariposa Inn for one night on our way to LA from San Francisco. The hotel is off HW 1 which makes it far from the main attractions in Monetery. Its a 15 minutes drive to Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row.

The hotel itself looked very boring and motel-like from the outside. Inside however it was a completely different experience. The front desk ladies were very helpful and even gave us discount coupons to some nice restaurants in town. The room was spacious and nicely furnished. Ours even had a fireplace though we didn't need to use. The king-size bed was large enough to fit the 3 of us (which included our 12-year old). Having a coffee maker in the room was a treat. Breakfast was not that great and there wasn't much seating available. On a dry day seating outside would have been fun.

Would we stay here again? Probably not as I would prefer staying close to town. Moneterey gets very quiet at night so stay in town if you want the buzz. Plus of course views of the Ocean.

Room Tip: The King room with the fireplace is worth paying the extra money. Ask if there is any Ocean view fro...

My husband and I had a family wedding in Carmel Valley. We had a large room with a king size bed, fireplace, huge tub with whirlpool jets. large flat screen TV, nice size bathroom with a shower for two, coffee maker, small microwave, mini fridge and a small couch. There was also a nice outdoor pool. Very nice room for the price.

This hotel is near the wharf and Cannery Row, but just far enough that you aren't paying through the nose for location. I wasn't expecting much based on the price, but we were pleasantly surprised by the updated bathroom, fireplace and nicely furnished, contemporary room. Unlike many of the hotels near the tourist attractions, there was no fee for parking. The breakfast was fine, with all the usual offerings. I asked where they had other locations during check out, and was disappointed to hear that this is their only location.

Stayed in four hotels during our trip down the coast, and while we did not particularly enjoy Monterey, the hotel was delightful. It was one of the first hotels coming into town. Clean, comfy room with microwave and small fridge in our room. We choose a room with two queens as it was a family trip. Room was plenty big enough for our family of four (traveled with teen/young adult children). We loved our room located very close to the outdoor fire pit and pool/spa, all available until 10pm. Although it was a bit brisk out, the spa was nice and we dried off by the fire in robes provided by the hotel. Breakfast was good, not much protein, but there was plenty to choose from. Tthe family loved the waffle maker, I enjoyed the yogurt w/ some granola, second best breakfast of the four hotels we vacated this trip. Although I am not sure how close it is to the wharf, we drove and parked by some shops (town center maybe?), then walked to the wharf for an expensive but tasteless dinner (stay away from Gilberts on the Wharf) which was .3 miles from the town center. I cannot say much else about the location in regards to distance/ things to do because we only stayed to break up our trip to San Francisco, and it turns out Monterey didnt really have anything we couldnt find in So Cal, so we left after breakfast. However, there is a nice walking path across from the hotel and a shopping center. Overall, we enjoyed the hotel.

My family spent 2 nights at this hotel over the July 4th holiday. We had a standard 2-bedroom on the 2nd floor. It's been nicely renovated with modern furnishings and decor, plus a gas fireplace. Hidden away in the dresser were a microwave, small fridge and a safe which were all handy things for us. There were spa robes in the bathroom, and the shampoo and conditioner were from H2O Plus which I love (I use this brand at home). There was free wireless too, and free covered parking.

The continental breakfast was handy and decent - the usual Belgian waffles, pastries, yogurt, cereal, juice coffee. The first morning, the temps were actually quite warm so we ate breakfast on the patio. The second morning, it was very cool so everyone tried to stay inside. There were only a few tables inside so it was rather crowded.

On the second floor, there was a large patio with ample seating surrounding a firepit. We didn't take advantage of this but it looked inviting.

The pool area was only OK - rather plain and bland compared to the rest of the property, but still fine for the kids. The pool itself was shallow with the deepest end being only 5 feet. The spa was generously sized and satisfyingly hot.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel if you're fine with driving a couple of miles to Cannery Row, the Wharf and Aquarium.

Room Tip: If you plan to visit the Aquarium multiple days, buy your tickets at the hotel desk. The tickets ar...

I stayed there six days for business. THe hotel is clean and easy access from the highway. Good price for the quality. Breakfast is included and is ok for european standards. The location is very good if you can move around with a car. Parking is free in front of each room. I would it recomend it for a relatively economic stay in the monterey area. Agree with a previous reviewer that acustic isolation of the door and the walls is not perfect.
