“Comfortable and convenient hotel in Monterey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights in July while attending a wedding and sightseeing. Friendly staff, well-groomed grounds, nice lobby and bar area. Our king room on the second floor had a comfortable bed, nice fresh linens, had room for an armchair and ottoman as well as a desk, and I loved our balcony overlooking the pool - would sit out there in the morning to drink my coffee (btw, the Starbucks coffee in the lobby is much better than what can be brewed in the room - it's worth the effort to get yourself a cup there.) Nicely groomed grounds with some lovely flowers; the pool area was sparkling clean, towels were picked up and fresh ones provided; there is a fire pit with cozy seating around it, and an elevated patio area where you could sit and enjoy the sun without the danger of being splashed. Free parking, free wi-fi, a short drive to downtown Monterey or the beach, and easy access to Highways 1 and 69 if you are going elsewhere. Now, the small issues: 1) The parking spaces in the garage are tight and you can end up in dead ends down there. By the second day, we just parked outside. 2) The building has long corridors - lots of breaks for access by stair, but only one elevator down to the garage. It's a long walk when you are moving your bags in or out. Not a problem for health folks, but if you have mobility issues, talk to the hotel staff about your room placement.

Room Tip: Get a poolside room if you want to enjoy your balcony. The outside rooms overlook driveways, parking...

Thank you for your very detailed review. You listed some of the great attributes of our property including balconies on every room, expansive landscaping and our outdoor large heated pool. As you mentioned we also offer complimentary underground parking which is a great amenity in Monterey. We hope you are able to visit us again in the near future and thank you again for your loyalty!

Rooms are newly updated. Try to get a corner room like room 106 as it is much bigger than the other rooms.
Free bfast and wifi. It's within 7-10 minutes from the airport. Writhin 10-20 minutes of golf, Carmel and all the other sites.

There is not ramp or elevator for your luggage when you check in, only steps!

Not cheap either, the drinks at the bar are expensive as well.

Thank you for posting your review. We always appreciate our happy customers telling others about the positive attributes of our Hotel. Many agree that our location is fabulous and suprisingly for a Hilton Garden Inn that we are quite large and expansive with a great pool. We hope you can enjoy another visit at our Hotel possibly in our off-season of Oct-Apr where our rates are a bit lower than summer.

This is a great place to stay if you want to stay away from the higher prices of downtown Monterey or the wharf. The environment has a sense of not being crowded and it is right near the highway for easy access. Too far to walk to wharf of downtown.

In our recent renovation we attempted to create a comfortable atmosphere with high quality finishes that bring great value to our guests. At first glance I believed your stay was good as mentioned in the title but after reading further I saw it was great and that is what we strive for...excellence in service and stay. Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to seeing you again.

Stayed here for 3 nights and probably due to bad timing was not content. There had been a leak of some sort and our room was next door to the plastic partition taped over the corridor to dry rooms out. We could smell damp as we walked in our room under the vent but the rest of the room was ok. Free wifi didn't reach our room. The in room coffe supplies were not replenished and we had to request these, although we gave up on the second day as the walk to reception due to the leak repairs avoidance took too long. We were also by the area the cleaning trolleys were stored so as the ladies gathered to start work every morning their voices woke us up, providing the workers next door hadn't already.we were compensated but I felt 80USD was rather poor.

Our goal is to have every guest leave 100% satisfied so I am sorry to read that you left somewhat dissapointed. Sometimes in our business events occur that are out of our control such as the broken sprinkler causing a flood in 5 rooms next to your room. I apologize if that caused any issue with your stay and it sounds like my FD attempted to recitify the situation but I completely understand sometimes there is not much else you can do. We have completed repaired all of the damaged rooms and have even improved those rooms better than they were before. We hope you can return to a 100% Hotel and leave 100% satisfied!

The Hilton Garden Inn in Monterey, CA was conveniently located to highways and downtown Monterey. We called hotel staff for directions off the freeway and the clerk was very helpful. Check in was easy and fast. Parking under the hotel was close to the elevator and we had a short distance to our room. The pool deck was clean and roomy. The fire pit was nice at night and deck furniture was in very good condition. Cookies were available in the lobby at 5:00p.m. The room was clean. We initially asked for two queen size beds but when we went to our room we were given a king. I was disappointed at that but we were too tired from our trip to move to another room which they did offer to us when I asked about it. We plan on going back. The breakfast was top notch, the pool was nice, we were welcomed and comfortable. It was a very pleasant stay.

Two nights, out the door over $800. VERY EXPENSIVE for what basically was like a motor lodge.

I understand we were in Monterey, where it was overcast and "rainy" off and on for 2 days. and for some reason they think it is ok to charge the rate they charge which I think was $365 per night. Add room tax and whatever and it adds up!

**HUGE spiders and mosquitos on the hallway walls-understandably because there are open stairwells that let the outside in so to speak-

Our "keys" never worked. SO FRUSTRATING! Especially when carrying stuff. When we left I think we had about 8 keys by that time.

Our room was right over the pool so for two days we kept hearing " MARCO POLO, MARCO POLO"

The room had a huge TV, actually too big for the space and for viewing from the bed. NO CLOSET but an armoire, they asked you to leave your valuables in the safe located in the room but we never found it and didn't have time or energy to complain about it.

The bathroom lighting was terrible for any woman to put on her makeup.

More for families with kids.

The breakfast buffet/restaurant was pretty decent and nicely priced.

Coffee in the room was nice

5pm cookies, in the lobby were good

I could have stayed at La Playa for less and should have.

Room Tip: do whatever you can to be as far away from the pool as possible. The kids staying will be in there r...

We are sorry to hear that we fell short of your expectations. During some of our summer special event weekends the demand and prices at all Hotels in Monterey and Carmel can be higher than what some visitors are used to. Summer is a great time to visit as most people have time but I encourage all of our guests to come in the non-summer months as we offer the same great service and Hotel but the weather is even better in Monterey at a lower price! Also, many of the families that vacation during summer and use our large heated pool often don't visit during the non-summer months due to school. We hope you are able to come again at another convenient time and experience Monterey in a different way.

Just completed a two-day stay at Hilton Garden Inn Monterey. Was a great jumping off point for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Pacific Grove, and Carmel. We read some reviews that said the hotel was out of the way...not really, it was a short drive to the Aquarium and you can easily walk to a free shuttle called The WAVE (Waterfront Area Visitor Express)...also called MST Trolley?

Hilton Garden Inn Monterey has a nice pool and hot tub. They should offer pool bar service; several guests we spoke to said the same thing. Hotel bar in the lobby was nice, it opened each evening at 5:00 pm and there are some restaurant specials that you can order in the bar, though they don't seem to promote it. There was no menu on our table in the bar. Could easily generate more revenue with little effort.

Front Desk staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. We were impressed with their professionalism. Housekeeping did an excellent job and they greeted you in the hallway, sign of good training.

Breakfast in the Pacific Grille was very good, a choice of cooked to order eggs, omelettes, cereals and fresh fruit. Staff was friendly and attentive. Complimentary Starbucks coffee was available in the lobby every morning and cookies in the evening.

The Pavilion Pantry is the lobby was just OK; prices were high, found this strange because they have a promotional sign in the elevator referring to "mini-priced snacks". Power Bar was $3-plus, a can of beer to go was $5...candy bar was $2-plus. They need to work on this, though that may be dictated by Hilton HQ.

Our room seemed small compared to most Hilton properties, but it was clean and the bathroom looked like it had been updated fairly recently. In-room microwave turned on, but would not heat a slice of pizza.

Be sure to buy your Aquarium tickets at the hotel, you get a 2-day ticket for the price of buying one at the Aquarium. This could have been promoted better by the hotel, there was a small sign on the check-in desk, but I'm sure lots of guests missed this. There was a good shopping mall nearby called Del Monte Center. They have a Whole Foods, CVS Drug Store and some good quick serve restaurants such as Pizza My Heart.

There was lots of free parking, including underground spots. Overall, a very nice stay, we will be back.
