“Great view, not much else”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2009

Personally, I thought the location of this hotel was awesome, and it was probably the biggest selling point for me. Even though it was November, being right on the beach was really cool. If you are in an ocean front room (which we were), the crashing waves lull you to sleep at night, which I thought was great. You also have a great view of Monterey from the front of the hotel, especially at night. And, Monterey and Carmel were just a short drive down Rt. 1.

Now, for the bad. We stayed at several hotels during our vacation in California, and this was the only one that we got hit with several fees I didn't realize. I found those fees later, so I don't know if they are just hidden in text or what. They wanted to charge $35 a night, which I protested, and they nicely waived that fee. But, there were other fees I didn't know about and weren't waived. Plus, for some reason, I thought breakfast was complimentary, and it's not. In fact, it's expensive, so we passed. The rooms are comfortable, but the decor is a little dated. Nice TVs, though. We also had a strange buzzing noise in our room and asked to be moved, which they agreed to. It ends up the noise was from a problem they were having with the elevator, which was near the room. The hotel overall seems like it needs remodeled.

But, the view every morning made up for the bad here, and our stay, overall, was decent.

We have found this hotel 5-6 years ago, and still enjoy staying there for getaway trips to Monterey/Carmel.
High points: excellent location with abundance of ocean and beach; pet friendly; great value, nice lounge with beautiful view.
Low points: old, aged building & rooms; low service level. Extra fees on top of published rates: parking & resort fees.

OK, I'm used to being hit for parking in a downtown hotel. But this is your average Best Western. A mile or two up the road from any restaurants or entertainment. Other than the beach being at the back door, location has nothing going for it (and who cares about the beach in November?). The room, staff, restaurant and bar are all mediocre. We were attending a conference here and so didn't have much choice. I was tempted to change hotels anyway. Yeah, nice view though.

We stayed there for two nights on our trip back to San Francisco. We wanted to see Salinas, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Carmel, Point Lobos and many other things. The hotel is situated right at the beach - which means that you get both the pleasures and pains of living right next to the Pacific Ocean. We had booked rooms with ocean view, but we were a bit disappointed when we found out that the balcony area also was access way to all the other rooms - but then again - the traffic was not disturbing. It is a bit away from downtown Monterey, but when you travel with small kids, nightlife is temporarily suspended.
The room was rather small when you stuff it with two quenn size beds, but is was clean and not worn down. The view was excellent - recommendable!
Parking is 20$ a day on site - not unreasonable.
The free WiFi was working flawlessly and a large new flatscreen delighted the kids.
The pool, spa and area around it was spotless and not crowded - as we were there off-season - the kids loved it!
If you want to go some where yoy have to drive - but as the hwy 1 rus close by the hotel, you can get easily to Monterey and other places in a breeze.
Checking in was smooth and effective - this does not apply to the checkout - there wes only one behind the desk when checking out and the procedure was excruciatingly slow - and when you have the rest of the family packed and ready, waiting in the car - this is not good enough.
Next time visiting, the kids will be older, and then we'll definitely go for something downtown Monterey.

My family has been coming to this hotel yearly for the past 6 years and have always enjoyed being on the beach and being able to bring our dog. I am sorry for those of you who have allergies to pets and those of you who have had rooms or noticed smells. There is nothing I can do about allergies, but smells? We LIVE with our dog and I never allow him to become smelly, he's always bathed, well groomed and flea free and very well house broken, not allowed to just go where he pleases. So shame on any pet owner who brings a dirty pet and allows soiling in inappropriate places. It makes it difficult for everyone and reduces the small number of places pets are welcome.
As for pet friendly, this spring when we checked in we received the news that pet cleaning surcharges had changed, and were at that time not indicated on the hotel website, and are now PER DAY not per stay, $25 non oceanview and $50 oceanview. This is not pet friendly, this is pet gouging.

I must say when we booked this hotel we did not realise it was so far out of town, this was fine for the day but when it came to the evening it was a $10 taxi ride each way. The hotel itself was fine, if very standard. Breakfast was good.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. Originally I booked a Garden View room but when we checked in and saw the view of the ocean from the lobby we upgraded to an ocean view. I thought this may be a waste - but it was well worth it!
The rooms were large and CLEAN.
The hotel staff was friendly and helpful.
The hotel is located right off the hightway and down the street from some chain (family) restaurants, gas station and market.
We were able to leave SF at 9am, check into the hotel, then leave for 17 mile drive at Pebble beach (where were have lunch overlooking the 18th green at PB - "Stillwater Restaurant") and then continue south to drive the ocean road.
I would recommend this hotel if you wanted to spend time on the beach too! Beautiful. Some surfers too.
