“Location, location, location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

Stayed at the hotel in November 2012. The address, Sand Dunes Drive, made us think it might be a good location, but nothing prepared us for the stunning views, the sunsets are spectacular to watch. We had booked a room on "beach side" and from the time we arrived, the staff made us feel particularly welcome and nothing was too much trouble for them. The room itself was clean, tidy and reasonably well organised, but the bathroom was a little cramped - watch you don't jam your toes as you close the door. One tip for anyone on beach side - take earplugs. you cannot turn down the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore. We decided to eat in the restaurant in the evening so got there early (before 5.30 pm). Thank goodness we did - it soon became really busy, but the food was fantastic - the orchid flower decoration adding the finishing touch to my meal - edible I was told, but it was just too pretty to eat. Although they were really busy the staff were attentive and very friendly. At one point the chef even appeared to talk to the guests - a lovely surprise for those dining. We also had breakfast the following morning and the selection was good, well prepared and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Again, just make sure you arrive as early as you can - it is very popular. We had to extend our stay by one night as we realised it was Thanksgiving and we did not want to be on the busy roads. Although there was initially a small misunderstanding about the new room, the member of staff on reception sorted it out quickly and arranged for all our luggage to be moved to our new room on the "garden side". It was definitely quieter but the bathroom was even smaller. It wasn't a huge problem as we only stayed for one more night, but it could be unacceptable to some. To end on a positive note - this hotel has a stunning location and is well worth a visit. PS. Note to photographers - Watch out for sea otters floating past on their way around the Bay.

Room Tip: Rooms on beach side have stunning views, but you can't turn down the sound of the waves crashing...

It sounds like our beachfront location was just right for your family! Our restaurant, Café Beach, is a local favorite in Monterey. I’m so glad you were able to enjoy the three things that make it so special: delicious food, attentive staff, and the best views in town. We look forward to your next visit, and thanks for the photos!

We started coming to this hotel about 20 years ago because of an annual conference, but liked it so well we have been coming back to stay a couple of times a year ever since, even if attending a conference at another hotel, or even just to get away. The location and scenery are unbeatable, especially if we stay in an oceanside room. The staff is always courteous, friendly and helpful. The parking garage was always a little difficult to get in and out of, because the bar didn't always want to work, but even that has been corrected. I have recommended this hotel to friends and family members and they have thanked me and told me how great it was.

We booked this hotel because it is on the beach and that is its greatest attribute.

The surf pounded on its foundations on our first night, sometimes causing our door to rattle and we could feel the bed quiver. Great stuff, and the sound of waves breaking is the best sleeping aid.

The hotel is located a mile or so north of Monterey, the only hotel on the wide sandy bay. To the right the beach, backed by increasing sized sanddunes, sweeps away from the road and appears deserted. To the left can be seen Monterey harbour and you can walk long the sand to reach Fishermans Wharf and Cannery Row. It took us about 40 minutes stroll to the harbour.

The hotel has four storeys, and it is right by the offramp 403 of Route 1 where the freeway comes closest to the beach and next to Monterey State Beach park.

Entrance to the hotel is on the land side on floor 2. We never really got the hang of where the stairways were and there are two lifts located behind reception. The restaurant is on the top (4th) floor with magnificent sea views. I’ve posted a separate review.

The hotel doesn’t have internal corridors but has covered outside walkways that go around all four sides and connect where the four blocks meet. I really dislike this design because it means you have people walking right past your bedroom window.

The rooms are adequate, not overly large. We had a twin queen on the 1st floor for one night and the 3rd floor ocean side for two nights. There was a square table with two chairs, a wardrobe and desk-drawer. A flat-screen television was fixed to the wall (didn’t use), air-conditioning controlled by a room thermostat (didn’t use), and a fresh air vent (didn’t use). The beds were comfortable and had adjustable intensity high powered reading lights on goosenecks (did use, they were excellent).

There were two electrically controlled shades, one was for shading from the light, thin with tiny holes in. In November we weren’t blinded by sunlight but it also gives privacy while allowing you a view outside (but be aware in the evening that if you have internal lights on then anyone outside can see right through), and there is a complete blackout screen.

The bathroom had a bath/shower with the washbasin right outside.

Rooms looked a little tired but were clean. We moved rooms and found the first room had drinking glasses made from glass but no face flannels, the second had face flannels but only paper cups, so there seems to be some inconsistency in housekeeping.

The room door was a little warped and needed a hard shove to properly close. It must be a non-stop job to maintain this hotel when it’s so close to the sea with salt spray constantly in the air and we accepted it .

Wireless internet was free (although you could pay from a higher bandwith service) and needed a logon where you give your name and room number to the internet provider, I found their page slow to connect and irritatingly came up each day stopping internet transactions until connected again to enter details, although Mrs Pontac didn’t have any problems and here initial logon lasted all the stay.

Front desk is friendly and helpful, there’s a large reception area with a floor to ceiling glass wall overlooking the ocean.

Car parking is controlled, presumably because of demand by beach visitors during the season, and costs extra; there is ample parking with a multi-storey car park.

There is no customer laundry, though the hotel offers a one day laundry service.

So, to sum up. The location cannot be beaten, the restaurant is superior. We’ll stay there next time we return to Monterey.

If I was there with kids I’d book a first floor room ocean side so they can exit the room directly into the small area with decks and sun loungers and showers and access directly onto the beautiful sand beach, though note there’s a partial sea view because of the sea wall. And you may want to choose the southern end of the hotel as that’s where the swimming pool is – on opposite side to sea. If you aren’t with kids go for an upper floor with great ocean view.

We actually stayed here in October 2011. I was a bit disappointed when I saw the room, it was really small for 2 adults and 2 children, the bathroom was tiny, you had to practically climb on the toilet to close the door, and it didn't close properly. But my partner and kids liked it. It was comfortable and had everything we needed for the small amount of time we spent in the room. The best part was it was absolute beach frontage, the view of Monterey Bay was awesome! We did have to park a fair way from the reception area which was a pain taking all our stuff in and out. Staff was nice, nothing outstanding. The restaurant however, was awesome! The meals were delicious and the view of the dolphins and sea otters cavorting in the waves while we ate breakfast and dinner was amazing! It is well out of town, but worth it for the view and if we had more time and it had been warmer, we would have made better use of that gorgeous beach!

12 years ago we discovered this place by accident -- and have been returning regularly ever since. We enjoy coming here a couple of times a year for a weekend getaway. The location along the beach is always relaxing, nothing like waking up to the amazing view.

The hotel is not fancy, rooms are basic. If you book ahead, you can find some good deals. However, the setting is beautiful, and you are literally on the beach. It's a mile away from Cannery Row, close enough to the action, yet relaxing and peaceful.

We came to spend thanksgiving with a few other families, and the hotel felt like being at a beach house. It's beachy and casual, with plenty of common spaces to spend time as a group. They have a game room on the 4th floor which was fun for the kids. We also love hanging out in the lobby. Free morning coffee in the lobby is a great perk for me, I love waking up and enjoying my coffee with the views from the beautiful lobby. Kids could not decide between being on the beach or at the pool. You can build a bonfire on the beach, so much fun to sit around and toast smores.

The restaurant offers a lovely breakfast, so we get a good start to the day. The hotel also puts together a wonderful thanksgiving dinner - making this a great place to spend the holidays with friends or family.

The staff is so friendly and welcoming, this place feels like a second home. It's not fancy (not a resort, more like a very comfy motel), but very comfortable and friendly. So many comfy spaces to relax - by the fire in the lobby, on the deck chairs along the beach, at the pool, in the restaurant overlooking the ocean .........

There are fancier places in Monterey, but this offers the best location and service with a smile.

Tip: It gets very crowded on summer weekends with all the weddings and party folks. Much prefer the fall - better weather (no fog!), and fewer people.

We'll be back!

Room Tip: Ocean side has great views. Ask for a room in Building A

Our holiday buffet and dinner specials offer delicious food, and are great for spending time with family (not spending time in the kitchen)! The rooms aren't huge, but you can almost spit in the water from your door. What a great location. Watch a beautiful sunset from the beach and sleep soundly at night listening to the waves crash on the shore. It is a great family location with lots to do. Staff is extemely helpful and the restaurant is great. Such beautiful views from ocean front room, lobby, restaurant and outdoor lounging areas.

The beach is what makes this place. The waves are awesome.

The rooms are average, well a little smaller than average to be hones and the beds were a bit hard and the "garden" is pretty disappointing. Pool looked ok, the Lobby was very nice with a fire and big floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the beach. The staff was really nice too.

I also believe like others that parking here should be free. There is no extra security and the hotel has plenty of parking (we even had free parking in San Francisco where parking is at a premium).

We rented bikes there for a ride and it was very nice except they need better seats! After riding for 5-6 hours you need a good seat (we cut our ride short due to pain from the HARD seats). HINT: if you do not hink you can make it back up the hill by the hotel you can go around under the freeway. The rec trail picks up like a block away.

Not sure if I would stay again. You can park all over out here and be at the beach.

Thank you for joining us. While our parking charge is much lower than the average amongst Monterey hotels, I understand this can be frustrating. Our parking structure provides in and out privileges, access until midnight on your day of departure, and 24-hour security. Incidentally, please feel free to contact the hotel prior to your next visit so we can arrange for a bicycle seat that works for you. Thanks again.
