We enjoyed our stay here and would stay here again. Charming cottage-like setting. Very friendly and responsive staff. Comfortable beds. Spacious rooms. Free breakfast (brand-name cereals, yogurt, good muffins, hard-boiled eggs, fresh-made waffles, toast, juice, coffee, some combination of bananas/apples/oranges, and the same mediocre biscuits and gravy most hotels serve) in a cheerful, sunlit room with REAL dishes (no plastic or Styrofoam). It's not very close to the Wharf but that's not a problem because the short walk is wonderful (one evening the entire walk was the farmer's market, awesome). The indoor pool and hot tub were pleasant. There is free Wi-Fi in the rooms and a computer in the lobby (no printer though). We left a coat behind and phoned; they are having UPS ship it to us (at our expense).
We stayed 4 nights, enjoyed it, would stay there again. This was a good value for Monterey which is expensive.
I wish I could give 5 out of 5. Here's why I can't.
Con #1. Breakfast was pleasant the first two mornings. On the third morning, a Thursday, breakfast fell apart. It was extremely crowded, not enough tables. Two women were working furiously in the kitchen and could not keep up. Tables weren't bussed (you'd think guests would bus their own, seeing the situation). Clean dishes and food items and even coffee were constantly out. This seemed to go on for the duration of the breakfast period. This was such a dramatic difference from the previous two days that I think something unusual must have gone wrong. The fourth day we got breakfast at a restaurant so I don't know how breakfast went on those days.
Con #2. We saw a rate online of $95 for 2 queen beds, but my husband called the hotel directly and got a reservation with a rate of $105 for 2 nights. When we checked in he presented our AARP membership assuming we'd get a little extra discount. Later, we extended our day for 2 more nights. We discovered we were being charged $145. It was explained to us that the rate changes constantly, because as the number of available rooms becomes smaller, the employees quote higher rates. (Do all hotels in California do this? I never encountered this before.) When we realized we were being charged $145 we explained we'd seen $95 online and were quoted $105 when we made the reservation, and the man at the desk politely said he would charge us $95 for the last night and $105 for the first three nights. In the end, when we checked out, we were charged $105 (plus taxes) for all four nights. That was close enough for us.
