“Popular for a reason...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

The place was packed when we got there, so we spent the wait at the bar accompanied by a surf documentary and an awesome tiki drinks menu and the spirits selection looked pretty extensive too.

Great atmosphere, decor and patio out the back. The staff were super attentive, offering drinks while we waited - blood orange soda anyone? Unfortunately I think our name got a bit lost on the wait list, but we quickly got the next table when we went to double check on it.

Food came out in good time. I had super tasty spicy edamame followed by cubano pork tacos - amazing. Teriyaki chicken skewers and luau pork 'heaven on a bun' were pretty darn good too.

Would definitely go again.

“Service was terrible/Food was pretty good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014

We were lucky to get a table quickly because some reservation had been cancelled. Staff was welcoming but waiter was cocky. Took our order and literally never came back to check on us, offer anything further, etc. I flagged him down to get a glass of water and his response was "another one?" Yes, if that's not too much trouble. Had to ask the maître d' for our check and when he brought it there were 3 items on it we had not ordered. He said he would see if he could get them removed... Which he did. The butterfish was great. I really liked the chicken tacos. And our granddaughter enjoyed the crab curry but the curry was indeed quite spicy even for her and she is used to spicy food. Prior to the lack of service (for which a commensurate lack of tip was provided) we were liking the place. But the service undid us. Won't be going back.

“Staff & food both great..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2014

We stopped overnight in Monterey on a recent road trip & we noticed this restaurant was close to use on Tripadvisor so decided to give it a go.

The restaurant is very cool & was very busy when we arrived without resrvations. We were offered a table in the garden with a patio heater rather than wait for an indoor table. The garden area was nice and the heaters kept the chill off.

Our waitress was lovely and friendly and she helped with our food choices. On the recommendation we ended up sharing a Hawaiian Ceviche dish for our appetizer. This was cured fish cooked in citrus with coconut milk, chilli and cilantro & garlic and it came with little crisp things. Our waitress did say if we didn't like she would change it which was nice - i've included a photo of the ceviche dish.

For entrées (USA speak for main course) I had a Blackened Ahi Steak sandwich (Tuna) with lovely fresh coleslaw and lovely sweet potato fries. The Tuna steak was cooked just how I asked it to be (pick in the middle). My wife had the Luau Pork Sandwich which was described as "heaven on a bun" and it was very yummy!! I've also attached a couple of photos of the tuna sandwich and the pork sandwich.

I also had a lovely Californian beer & my wife had two lovely cocktails which had plenty of alcohol in them!

We didn't have room for desert as we were so stuffed - I'd like to say thanks to our really friendly waitress at the Hula and would highly recommend a visit if you get the chance.

“No better value in Monterey”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

From a distance we could see a line of people on the sidewalk. We knew it must be the line for Hula's. It was. And having tasted the food there I can understand why it is so popular. Excellent dishes, well prepared and at a very reasonable price. If you're in Monterey definitely make the effort and get to this restaurant.
