“Clean, friendly, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

Many of the reviews here already say it, but it is worth repeating: this hotel is very nice with a great location. The bathroom in the room was particularly large, which was excellent. Being in the historic downtown and close to fisherman's wharf made many places a short walk away. The free Monterey trolley stops just out front to take you up to Cannery Row and the aquarium. There are two reasons that I did not give the hotel five stars. First, the room did not have air-conditioning, which should be okay in the perfect climate of Monterey. However, leaving the sliding glass door open meant that we got to hear the seagulls at all hours of the day. With their screeching similar to a crying child, it did make for difficult sleep at times. Second, the flush toilets are the power flush type toilet. Thus, whenever you flush the toilet it is exceptionally loud. So loud in fact, that you can hear it when your neighbors flush their toilet too.

This is a strong 4-star spot. The location is super, on the coast very near the downtown, wharf, aquarium, ... lots to explore. The service for my stay was very nice. Room was clean. Conference food was very good. Concierge service is available and responsive. Restaurant is very good, and other very nice choices are within walking distance. If you are a runner or walker, you can run or walk along the beautiful bay coast path that is only a few steps outside the door. Really a nice place to explore.

One real standout for this hotel is their beds. They use mattresses made by "Monterey Mattress Company". I am not sure who they are (they advertise on a little card on the desk that one can purchase a Monterey Mattress after trying them out), but I can attest that the beds were absolutely the most comfortable of any hotel where I have ever stayed. Lots of high quality pillows too, which seals the deal for me. Comfortable beds when traveling are just a great surprise, never expected, and certainly not taken for granted!

Great hotel in an awesome location! We only stayed there one night but the staff was very friendly, rooms were nice and clean and the hotel is close to the wharf and Alvarado street. Helpful that parking was nearby.

What a great hotel deal this was...found on Travelzoo. $159 for spacious king-bedded room and full buffet breakfast included. Breakfast was unlimited high quality buffet including smoked salmon (lox). Great service throughout our stay; very friendly, helpful staff! Great location in town w covered parking ($15and per day). Loved the destination wedding to this area andto hotel...made fora a memorable vacation start!

I stayed one night here and the room itself was very nice. Well appointed, very clean, smelled good and quiet. I agree with other reviewers that charging extra for wi-fi is tacky, given that the room cost over $200/night. Also, unless you specifically ask (and pay for) a view, your view will probably be roofs. Mine was. The pool and parking garage are on the other side of a plaza so you have to walk a short ways to check in and cross a public area to use the pool. Not a huge deal, but again, for the price . . .
The hotel is ideally situated for walking to the Wharf and through downtown Monterey. The plaza between the hotel and the parking has shops too. Overall, this is a nice hotel. The restaurant is OK. I prefer the restaurants on the Wharf.

Room Tip: If you want a view, be sure the specify that and be willing to pay extra for the "upgrade"...

I do probably 100 room nights per year and this is the nicest hotel I've stayed in for a very long time, some positives

- check in really friendly
- room fantastically decorated and appointed, very high standard
- lovely view
- lovely reception and public areas
- nice pool

Some improvements though even though I rated it five star there were a few things that irritated

- $10 wifi, really at a $300 room rate ?
- $25 dollar parking again at a $300 room rate, don't like being gouged 10% on an already expensive room rate

Highly recommend none the less

Rob

Since I paid $500+ for a harbor king suite, the expectation was that this was a fine hotel in Monterey. It certainly is that but it needs some updating (the carpets were probably hip and cool back in the 1970s) and they act like a Motel 6 when it comes to billing. $5 to simply print out e-vouchers issued through them. Want to use Wi-Fi, there's an extra $10 charge for that. Tacky promos such as "share your experiences on social media and we'll give you a room upgrade." I did a lot of research to find a nice hotel in the Monterey Bay and Carmel area. I thought by paying more, I would get a finer and higher-class experience. Instead, I'm wishing I had just gone to a B&B instead. The experience at this hotel missed the mark.
