When my husband was stationed at DLI in 2005 -2007, I first was introduced to Bennett and his unassuming shop. You walk in, and it is an optical orgasm for those who love anything military; shirts, hats, signs - even photos of Bennett himself with the soldiers he so dearly loves to greet with his special hand shake. Once you have been greeted by Bennett's warm smile, you head to the back to get the best sandwich you have ever eaten. I was introduced to the #27 myself - and I have not ordered another sandwich since... The warm bacon, the breaded chicken breast, the fresh flat french roll - HEAVEN all neatly wrapped in a cellophane blanket or enclosed in a styrofoam "giftbox". :) I add a little personal touch with some jalapenos and pepperjack cheese to spice it up a bit.
And if you are thirsty - he has a plethora of bubbly (both straight edge and alcoholic) for you to choose from. And if it is not in there that day, by George, you bet Bennett can get it.
True, it is not technially a "delicatessen" or restaurant by any means - it is simply a great place to meet great people - grab a bite to eat and a seat if you can manage. If the limited seating is full - hell - you are in Monterey, folks - don't gripe about the lack of seating! Take your ginormous sandwich to go and get out to Jack's Peak, Big Sur, or even near the pier - and quit griping about how far from a restaurant it is. Go outside and enjoy the best sandwich you will ever eat.
I moved away for a year, and we came back just recently for DLI (once again) - and let me tell you - this place was the last thing on my mind when I left, and the first thing in my mouth when I came back!
