“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

Ate here in early May and we were treated to one of the best meals of our 3 week holiday. We shared duck popcorn to start because we were intrigued and it was one of the maddest, but tastiest things I've ever eaten.

Our waiter, Chris was friendly and attentive and was able to provide some really good suggestions, including a couple of killer cocktails and a fabulous bottle of wine.

The atmosphere was really great - buzzy but intimate at the same time.

“Appetizers wine and dessert good, waitress - not so much”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

5/22/13 - We visited the Montrio Bistro as we had heard good things about it via the various on-line research resources (Yelp etc.). Our waitress for the evening was Charissa. Initally she was nice, personable. We had eaten a late lunch earlier in the day at Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur so we stopped at Montrio for appetizers and a dessert. Charissa described the specials which sounded tempting but we were still full from lunch so we stuck with the plan. She mentioned how her kids liked some of the entrees. The atmosphere and music were to our liking. The appetizers we had (mussels and bacon wrapped prawns) were excellent. When we were done with the appetizers Charrisa came back to our table to see if we were going to order dinner and when we said no it seemed like a Jekyll and Hyde transformation took place. She turned somewhat cold and mechanical from that point forward. It appeared that her initial friendly demeanor was based on the expectation of a big tab for dinner which would mean and equally big tip. When we left she was serving the table right next to ours but didn't acknowledge us or say good-bye. So we plan to try the restaurant again if we're in Monterey but we'll keep an eye out for the staff providing service.

“Great service and good food...”

Cozy and interesting, this restaurant does Monterey justice. All our dishes were tasty and well presented. We had one minor goof-up and the waiter corrected it immediately without protest of any kind. I would go again.

“Appetizers and desert was perfect for our dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

This was quite a nice experience for us. Sometimes you need to eat but you don't need to eat a lot. There was a great selection on the menu. Since we were driving we did not drink anything but there great coffee. I would highly recommend the beet caprese and the spicy beans as appetizers. The waitress was very good and personable considering how very busy they were at the time. The place was really full. We still were well served the food was great. It is not an inexpensive restaurant but worth it. I had been there once before at least 7 years before I believe and it was good then too. I would definitely go back.

“Splurge-able”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

The last time I came here was for my own goodbye party in a private room on the second floor. We went last night, no special occasion, just to have a nice dinner with an out-of-town friend. Service was almost a little too attentive, our server was such a sweetheart, but ended up removing plates before everyone was done, which is a big no-no in my book. My poor friend was alone with her plate for the last few minutes of the meal- that's embarrassing! The food was delicious- well cooked, tasty, and beautifully presented. I'm not sure when I'll go again because it's a bit out of my price range, but not ridiculous. All around comfortable, nice experience.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to review Montrio Bistro. It sounds as if you enjoyed the evening but the one thing that stood out was clearing plates before everyone finished their meal. We train our staff to clear as people finish, but In the future if you let us know we will be more than happy to follow your instructions not to clear.
Hope that you visit again.
