The HI in Monterey was great for a couple of nights so that we could check out the city and surrounding area. We were going to stay in a local hotel but due to a biking rally everywhere was booked up so we tried the hostel. The people there were friendly, we were in an all girls dorm, although mixed dorms were availiable. There was a kitchen, where 'DIY' pancakes were free each morning. yes, there were a lot of rules placed around the hostel but to be honest none of them seemed that enforced, so it was more relaxed than anticipated. Theres a big games room, with internet and sofas, and the tokens you get for time in the shower are long enough. We read about having to do chores while staying, but we didnt have to do anything, which was great. It was v close to the aquarium and cannery row, which had loads of bars and restaurants. There was free parking onsite too. One bad thing was that some of the guests in our dorms got up REALLY early and were noisy and woke us up, and the main doors lock at 1am so you cant have a massive night out, but these are only little things. very good value, i'd recommend it to any budget travellers.
